The ability to possess strength is built on by a continual commitment to personal values. Individuals who are tenacious and who are willing to have faith in their beliefs are capable of being extremely empathetic and have the ability to identify and connect with others. Strength and empathy work hand in hand to create a strong sense of resilience in the face of conflict. Individuals who are able to act in a resilient manner for their personal values live balanced lives and are successful in upholding personal goals. Throughout Timothy Findley’s novel The Wars, the power of empathy is demonstrated by Robert Ross; an extremely compassionate and caring young man.

In the year of 1954, was the beginning of reunification of communism within Vietnam. A great number of events were taken place within this time, and new events were being established. This has embarked a positive and negative effect on Vietnam, and has made its way up to the United States. Where the role of Caputo played an important role of the story that tells about his experiences he faced. From the time, he was a suburban boy who took on the responsibility of becoming a United States Marine.

Before World War I, all of Europe in 1914, was tense and like a bomb or a fire was waiting to erupt. Europe had not seen a major war in years, but due to Militarism, Imperialism, Alliances, and Nationalism tensions grew high. Each country was competing to be the best by gaining more territory and growing in their military size and successful economies. World War 1 was waiting to happen and the assassination of the Archduke was the spark that lit Europe up. In All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque we see the effects of the assassination.

A War of Self In his novel, A Separate Peace, Knowles uses the story of Gene Forrester to examine a dark aspect of human nature. Gene Forrester, the novel’s protagonist, fights an inner battle of jealousy and hatred towards his best friend, Phineas. Phineas, an athlete, charismatic charmer, and fearless boy is someone that Gene wishes he could be. Gene creates an enemy out of Phineas in his mind because of the “competition” that is their friendship.

The Truth About War Tim O'Brien's short story talks about how war is not all about killing someone or blowing someone up. There a lot more to war. Like being scared, Nervous, Happy, Exciting, and tiring. In the short story “Where Have You Gone Charming Billy” ‘Talks about how when the soldiers are walking through the forest in the dark of night how nervous and scared they are.’

Responsibility often comes with the connotations of burden and sacrifice and most of the time, this is true. In The Wars, by Timothy Findley, the concept of responsibility is demonstrated in the character of Mrs. Ross whose duties as a wife and a mother may be viewed as cold, cruel, and purposefully isolating; the complete opposite of the archetype of a compassionate mother figure. However, like each unique individual in society, the way one responds and takes responsibility varies infinitely; Mrs. Ross attempts to dissociate from society when she feels she has not fulfilled her duties and responsibilities. However, her empathetic nature prevents her from completely isolating herself from all sentiment. Rather, she subconsciously internalizes the welfare and hardships faced by others while sacrificing her own well-being.

A Rumor of War by Philip Caputo shows the hard work and difficult tasks the men had to go through to prove themselves and protect their country. The war will change the men’s attitudes and the way they do everything. Men made sacrifices in the Vietnam War most people would never make in a lifetime, they will not just sacrifice but push themselves physically harder than most any other men. The men will also emotionally change from constantly watching other men die, or killing other men. The mens first kill was always the hardest for them, mentally they had so many thoughts of the other mans close ones back home and what they would go through and how it would be all their fault.

I read the book called “The Wednesday Wars” by Gary D.Schmidt and it is a Newbery honor book and a Printz Honor Book. The book is about a seventh grader named Holling Hoodhood. He has an older sibling who’s his sister who is a flower child, a mom who smokes but doesn't like people knowing and a dad who is the architect for Hoodhood and Associates. Holling is hated by his teacher, Mrs.Baker. The teacher hates Holling because on Wednesdays, everyone in the class either goes to Hebrew school or Catechism and so the teacher has to spend the afternoon with him and him only.

Illusion Versus Reality Illusions tend to drift an individual away from their sanity, causing them to negligently live their lives according to false, misleading and fantasized beliefs. Reality, on the other hand, is the state of the world in which it exists. The theme of reality versus illusion, and how one copes with conflict, is excessively depicted in Margaret Laurence “Horses of the night,” through the protagonist, Chris. He experiences several external and internal conflicts associating with his grandfather and chris’ environment. In relation with external conflicts, Chris encounters internal and external conflicts between society and himself, his need to obtain a rich life to uphold his reputation in society takes over his mind, and the reality becomes a blur of colors which he does not seem to see.

¬¬¬¬¬The Wars Essay The concept of resilience is often described as being able to recover from difficult experiences or pasts, where one’s resilience could be impacted by drastic changes that occur in their lives. It is something that guides one’s decisions and often defines their morals and what individuals perceive to be right or wrong; depending on the situation they are encountering. Resilience is highly dependent on the thought of empathy, where the resilience of people who have experienced empathy will be different from others who haven’t. How individuals deal with these differences determines one’s level of empathy and also impacts their resilience.

“Never that which is shall die.” This quote appears in the beginning of The Wars quoted by Euripes. This phrase means that once something exists, it never really dies. In the novel by Timothy Findley, the quote strongly relates to the main character Robert. As the story continues on, Robert starts off with innocence and despite all the terrible things he does throughout the book, his innocence and kindness never really dies, it will always be present.

Robert Ross’s journey throughout the novel leaves him unable to recognize his reflection, expecting to see the image of a god, he sees the image of a scarecrow. Findley writes, “He’d thought he would stand and see himself like a god in the glass—and there he was: a scarecrow” (Findley169). Findley portrays Robert’s moment of blindness as a connection to the changes he undergoes throughout the novel. Robert at this point in unable to recognize himself as the young boy he started off as or the hero he wanted to become. Instead, the war strips his character and left him feeling as if he has no connection to who he used to be, truthfully, he isn’t and in this scene Robert understands this.

Yuri Kochiyama is a Japanese-American civil rights activist, and author of “Then Came the War” in which she describes her experience in the detention camps while the war goes on. December 7th, is when Kochiyama life began to change from having the bombing in Pearl Harbor to having her father taken away by the FBI. All fishing men who were close to the coast were arrested and sent into detention camps that were located in Montana, New Mexico and South Dakota. Kochiyama’s father had just gotten out of surgery before he was arrested and from all the movement he’d been doing, he begun to get sick. Close to seeing death actually, until the authorities finally let him be hospitalized.

Robert’s character development and his constant revaluations are evident through the use of foreshadowing as it allows the reader to make connections to Robert’s road to madness; the implementation of animal imagery depicts Robert’s shift in character; and the many themes throughout the text are symbolic of Robert’s struggle into becoming a sophisticated soldier. Findley’s use of diction shows the complexity of Robert’s character and his overall development which changes how a typical reader would view the novel. The Wars is a microcosmic depiction of inescapable horrors where Findley makes the reader one with his tone and allows them to hear, feel and witness anew; he leaves ineradicable images and reverberations in the heart and mind of the
