In 1852, he was sent to Fort Vancouver, in what is now Washington State. In 1853, Grant was promoted to captain and shipped to Fort Humboldt on the Northern California coast, where he had a run-in with the fort's officer, Lieutenant Colonel

He was in charge of supplies and equipment. Grant also served in the American-Mexican war, and made a good example for himself. Initially he was not of a infantry role severing as a quartermaster. Grant would eventually get a chance to lead a Calvary attack in the war and was very successful. He learned leadership and tactics and began to establish himself as a young leader.

When he was a colonel, he gave his first command of the 21st Illinois Infantry, but then was promoted to brigadier general in July 1861. Grant earned a nickname of “Unconditional Surrender”. Many people wanted Grant removed from command because he faced an overwhelming amount of casualties. The Commander who in 1864 used attrition without regard to the lives of his own soldiers in order to kill off the enemy which could no longer replenish its losses. Grant was a very prominent figure of the time period and led the Union to victory and helped heal the fractured United States afterward. General Grant began his military career at West Point when he was just sixteen. He was top of his class and when he graduated, he began his four years of service and went into combat in the Mexican-American War. He was promoted to captain as a result of his bravery during the war. After this, his four-year commitment to the army was up, he left and did not expect to come back.

Grant started to plan a major attack on the Confederate´s capital of Richmond. Grants big plan was to keep the confederates busy protecting their capital while another part of the union run in and take Georgia. This would make it impossible for the confederates general Lee to send troops to Georgia. This would be Ulysses S. Grant´s first fight as general for the union.

The new found confidence in General Ulysses S. Grant would elevate him from a widely unproven leader to the rank of Union General. His victory at Fort Donelson would earn him the nickname “Unconditional Surrender.” because when the Confederate general John B. Floyd went to surrender Fort Donelson he did so accepting Grants terms of no compromise. He earned the reputation as an aggressive commander and worked closely with Lincoln during the war.

While he was posted at Fort Humboldt, California he his commander was Robert Buchanan who was still angry about their argument at West Point. Buchanan spent a lot of time spreading rumours of Grant’s drinking to try and destroy Grant’s career. Eventually, because of the malicious rumors Grant resigned from the army and tried to work several different jobs. In the end his job did not work out so when the Civil War broke out he rejoined the Union Army. Grant’s alcoholism was an attribute that actually made him a better leader.

He was a chief in commander even though he had little experience on the battlefield(Coolidge 163). That didn’t stop him from going forth and reading about warfare. He improved many of the Union’s tactics because the Union general weren’t the best and the south exceed them in generals. The first reason that Ulysses S. Grant is criticized is because he was accused of not being a skilled general, and instead people say that General Lee, his enemy in war, was a superior general. Many historians from the time period say that General Grant sacrificed too many men in order to win the war, instead saying that his enemies fought better than he and his army did. When fighting the war, Grant did sacrifice many men in order to eventually win against the confederacy. What many people do not understand is that he did this for a strategic reason. Grant understood that the southern confederacy had less men and less equipment than the further industrialized north, so killing as many enemy men as possible was necessary to win the war in a way that would wear down the enemy.

General Ulysses S. Grant was a very powerful man. He was the son of a tanner on the Western frontier. He wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He was very modern, and thought you had to work hard no matter what. Grant was a man that did not live in the past.
