Ulysses S. Grant is a well-known civil war hero who is on the 50 dollar bill. He was born to Jesse and Hannah Grant in1822 (Bio.com Editors). When he was younger he got teased for being quiet and shy. Although being teased by others brought him down, he would always find joy grooming his horses at his family farm. But as years went on he decided to join the Union. After spending time with his roommates family while in the Union, he married his roommate’s sister, Julia Dent (Bio.com Editors).
One of the first major wars he fought in was the Mexican war. He served under General Zachary Taylor. He mostly was the overseer of all the supplies being transported to the Union. Then he took a break from the military and worked in his families shop. …show more content…

Shortly thereafter he was moved to be a brigadier general over a larger portion of the army. Two months later he was given command of the District of Southeast Missouri. In less than one year Ulysses S. Grant was given three different positions in Northern Army (Civil War Trust). Early in the war he started the way he did things very differently. His strategy was simply, “Find out where your enemy is, get him as soon as you can, strike at him as hard as you can, and keep moving forward” (Creating America 493). He seemed to be merciless compared to the Lieutenant General at the time, George McClellan, who was well-known to be over-cautious. People wanted him out because of the high casualty rates, but Lincoln never did. After some failures in the previous commanders, Lincoln would soon put Grant in charge of the entire northern army. After Grant served in the war for some time he was asked to go to the white house to be promoted to Lieutenant General, because of his great leadership and past failures in Lieutenant Generals of the Northern army.
