Typically when there are males in the family they look up to their father figures for guidance and wish to be like them whereas, the females look up their mom more and are taught since their young to be a lady. This balance of qualities creates a structure that meets the norms and values of a family. It had been previously seen that when there is deviation from the norms there is a disorganization. Marriage is an important institution in a society and although there have been changes in the trend of marriage pattern, it is still very clear that marriage still matters. Marriage exists and its main aim is to bring two people together to form a union, where a man and a woman leave their families and join together to become one where they often start their own family. Sociologists are mostly interested in the relationship between marriage and family as they form the key structures in a society. The key interest on the correlation between marriage and family is because marriages are historically regarded as the institutions that create a family while families are on the other hand the very basic unit upon which our societies are founded on.

Marriage and Family Functionalist perspective Family is a type of social institution concerned with the support, care, protection, and socialization of the children. The functionalist perspective on family focuses on the functions of the family, the functions being the socialization of children, providing love and companionship, regulation of sexual behaviour, and the occupation of various economic roles. Functionalists also look at how a family relates to the rest of society and how it helps maintain it. According to the functionalist view, the economic functions of a family include production and consumption, and the inheritance of wealth and other material assets from one generation to the other.

According to the Dictionary, Sociology is defined as the study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society. This means that people are willing to study social problems throughout the world and the society that they live in. In my life, I deal with my social class, Gender, Race, Religion, and the time I was born. Because of who I am, I definitely have been a part of a different upbringing and lifestyle that many sociologist may find interesting.

Upon reading Chapter 1: An Introduction to Sociology, it became apparent that a sociology course can easily affect an individual’s perspective on the world. Often, it is difficult for individuals to remain open-minded in their worldviews, partially because they are limited in their accessibility to the terminology and knowledge outlined in a sociology course. For example, my worldview acknowledges how racial and gender inequalities are a direct result of how society cares more for the elite than lower-class citizens. The chapter’s text introduced the conflict theory, which aligned with my worldview, but it also introduced structural-functionalism and symbolic interactionism. Since the beginning of modern human civilization, there has always been tension for those who do not share the same color, background, culture, or race. People often tend to stick to those who are similar to themselves while also alienating those for are different and who seem to pose a threat. Durkheim is a sociological theorist that places a huge importance on the concept of suicide. She defines suicide as direct or indirect result of a positive or negative act accomplished by the victim himself. The individuals who place the thought of suicide into their minds automatically present their lives as unworthy. This individual gave up and abandoned life to the point of complete disappearance. When the feel for life disappears the act to commit becomes even stronger.

Functionalists claim that society is held together by the cohesion of people who agree to work together to achieve what is best for it. The government educates children in the society who intern pay taxes which are essential in running it. This means that the society depends on the state to educate their children who in turn grow up to become responsible law abiding, taxpaying citizens who later support the state. The functionalist perspective has been criticized for not considering the negative aspects such as divorce for the case of the marriage institution. This perspective does not encourage people to participate in changing the society even though the change benefits them.

I would like to begin this essay by agreeing with the above statement. Sociology began in the 19th century in order to try understand the movement from a traditional society to a modern society. In sociology we study the ideas and opinions of Karl Marx. His ideas along with many others are still relevant in the world today.
