The short film, Play, by David Kaplan and Eric Zimmerman, is about different characters that go through a series of games that is inside their head. An element that the film uses is lighting which is used to show the theme of life throughout different scenes. The scene starts with a low class guy, or in other words a “thug.” He walks around the city and messes with other people. This scene uses lots of low key lights with very little high key lights in the shops. The darkness could represent sadness, low class, or the city life at night. Scene two starts with a school girl who ends up having a pillow fight with other girls on a bed. This scene uses lots of high key lights throughout. Pleasantville is a movie about two siblings who find their true colors with the help of others. David and Jennifer fight all the time, and when they fought over the TV remote it broke. Out of nowhere a TV repairman gives them a special remote, allowing them to be teleported into David’s favorite show Pleasantville. Pleasantville takes place in the 50s and is a black and white program. There everyone is happy, life is simple, and there are no conflicts.
Scene1: The picture of the house presents a nice home owned by an ordinary family. The background (picture of the house) fades from the coloured picture into a black and white picture. This shows that something bad is happening. A picture of the abuse dissolves from the house to show us what is actually happening, and helps us to create a better image.

Darkness and music have given unusual prominence that emphasises the awful life in Harlem, and how music brought those two brothers together at the end of the story. Each symbol represents its own unique sign. The light used in many forms such as moonlight, spotlight, or even the light of the car. “There isn’t any other tale to tell, it’s the only light we’ve got in all this darkness” (James). Besides the fear, and despair of society in Harlem, the light seems to be glowing in the darkness, symbolizes a form of salvation and a moral life.

One way this was shown was when Romeo says, ¨she doth teach the torches to burn bright¨(21), and ¨So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows¨(21). Here, the darkness around Juliet made her beauty stand out like a torch and her physical beauty synmbolized a white dove amongst black crows even though he didnt know anything about her.
