Throughout mankind history, there has not been a period of time where there was not the division between rich and poor. However, this gap increases year after year. Consequently, the writer Toni Cade Bambara uses setting and characterization to address the social inequality in her story “The Lesson.” The author uses the poor black community of Harlem as setting to aim the economic inequality. The characters live in poverty, which is shown persistently in the story. For example, the narrator says that “we all poor and live in the slums” (Bambara 56). This quote is the first clue in order to know the conditions in which these people are living. She is a different kind of girl, and she gets mad when she realizes the problem of the society. She is not a common girl because she does not behave femininely. Additionally, she really knows the slang of her community; in fact, she uses a great variety of words, such as “bitch”, “faggot”, and other vulgar words. Furthermore, the Sylvia says, “[A]in’t nobody gonna beat me at nuthin” (Bambara 60). She means that she will not let anyone to trample her, and she will fight for what she deserves. During the story, she gets mad because of the inequality. Also, when she knows the price of the boat, and her cousin touches it: “[I] sure want to punch somebody in the mouth” (Bambara 59). She is angry because of the differences in the social-economic level between people, and she just realizes it recently. In addition, the storyteller says that, “For some reason this pisses me off” (Bambara 57). It shows that she is really furious because she is not able to believe that someone would spend that amount of money in a toy instead of helping others or save it for a better purpose. Moreover, rendering the narrator, “That much money it should last forever…” (Bambara 58). The Elements of A Good Story What makes a good story? Oftentimes writers encounter questions like this and start to wonder about the writing essentials of a good story. As many skills and beautiful words that make up a captivating story, it will have to be one that makes connections to the readers. Only when readers are able to make a connection to their experience or values, they start gaining from the story. Through creating conflicts, conveying the theme and a relative background, the writers of “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “Sonny’s Blues” fully express their values and thoughts by the “bridge” between readers and them.
Sugar learns that there is a social inequality between the rich and poor people. Sugar realizes when they are in the toy store that the cost of the sailboat can feed a lot of families. Because of what Sugar says, Sylvia confesses, “sorrowfully I’m thinkin. And something weird is going on. I can feel it in my chest” (310).
In chapter 2, “Pedagogy of the Oppressed” by Paul Freire, he explains his view of the educational system. Freire argues that the educational system uses the wrong method of teaching, the “banking” method to teach students. He suggests a new method called “problem-posing.” He believes that this method is more effective for students and teachers. Banking education is based on teachers assuming that the students are passive and that they can take all control, determine what would be learned and just “fill” the students with facts.
Towards the end, Sylvia and her group see the riches of the “white folks” and now sees that there is economic and social inequality. Sylvia is a round character due to her attitude and bitterness while her development reflects her understanding the lesson, and this knowledge creates an epiphany in her. Sylvia and her friend Sugar make it clear that they’d rather be somewhere else and out enjoying the day. Sylvia and her friends are astounded by the price tags they see on some toys and are left breathless wondering why someone would pay “37$ for a performing clown or 1000$ for a handcrafted sailboat”. The conflict between the narrator Sylvia is external conflict and it is shown by self VS economic welfare.
Why is Sylvia angry? Should she be sad or disappointed instead of being angry? Is Sylvia angry because of social inequality? I think Sylvia and Sugar feel uncomfortable being at FAO Schwartz.
Lesson Learned Toni Cade Bambara creates a character that is way too smart to ignore what is happening around her in the real world. Throughout the story story, she learns that there is a difference between the rich and the poor, and even though it isn’t fair is not fair, it is very real. By the end, Sylvia, a rebellious, “terrorize the West Indian kids and take their hair ribbons and their money” (625) kind of girl with terrible people skills, living in a typical African American neighborhood finds she experiences a huge attitude adjustment in regards to her outlook on not just money, but life in Bambara’s The Lesson.
“No, this isn’t my house I say and shake my head as if shaking could undo the year I’ve lived here (Cisneros 106).” This quote shows Esperanza’s unwillingness of accepting her poor neighbourhood because of the violence and inequality that has happened in it. In the House on Mango Street, the author, Sandra Cisneros, shows that there is a direct link between inequality, violence and poverty. The House on Mango Street shows women are held back by the inequalities that they face. Cisneros shows that racism prevents individuals from receiving job opportunities which leads to poverty and violence.
The symbols present in “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara, depict the economic and social injustices faced by specific members of society, specifically the children in the story. The characters in the story are being mentored by Miss Moore, a woman from their block who has taken up the role of taking them out on weekly outings. The story touches on the situation of the children that are stuck in living in almost poverty. “The Lesson” focuses on the socioeconomic disparities between the different racial groups and how. Bambara uses several techniques such as irony, othering, and second person point of view to make the story meaningful and demonstrate the characteristics of the characters.
The choices made at the end of each story were made due to characters pride getting the best of them and can be predicted to harm them in the future. After walking away from Miss Moore, Sylvia thinks about the day and claims “ain’t nobody gonna beat me at nuthin” (Bambara 6). Throughout the story, Sylvia has pessimistic thoughts that may affect her future. By not admitting she learned something, it can be inferred that her pride will not allow her to acknowledge the lesson. Due to this, Sylvia may suffer a fall in her life, such as the quotation, “pride comes before Destruction” suggests.
Social inequality is overlooked by many. It affects so many of us, though we have yet to realize how extreme it is. Lee argues in this novel how much stress social inequalities put on the black and white races throughout the 1930s. Although, social inequalities did not just affect different races, it also affected poor people and family backgrounds. Black women are treated less than because of their ascribed traits, their gender and race, and are often dehumanized and belittled throughout the movie. They are treated like slaves and are seen as easily disposable. There are several moments throughout the film that show the racial, gender, and class inequalities. These moments also show exploitation and opportunity hoarding. The Help also explains historical context of the inequality that occurred during that time period.
Social inequalities between black and white people are no longer as distinct as they were a few decades ago. Nevertheless, many people still have a lot of prejudices against African-Americans. The unfairness of socioeconomic status can be seen in our daily lives yet it is something that we push to the back of our minds. Black people were perceived as the lowest class and throughout the story people would treat them as if they were dirt. Being in the lowest class, they would have to do all of the terrible work. They never had a chance to get a good job and be successful because of the white people.
