Video Response Worksheet SOCI 101 CCBC / Fall 2015 Section __ / Franz, Aaron MS-13 A.) 1.) Society – A society is a select group of people who share a culture and a territory. This is ever present when we inspect gang-style groups such as MS-13. They have formed a culture around themselves, and share a territory, specifically so that they can control their area. Be is a street, a c ity, or a whole country, a society is a selective cultural group that shares distinct elements through nearly every one of its members, and the boundaries of the society can fluctuate with time, as well as the ideals that the society is based upon. This gives credence to the movement of MS-13, and their change from a small street gang in LA, to one of …show more content…
The idea that groups can affect the individual drastically, and we can affect groups is pretty interesting to note. In the case of the film, MS-13 comes into many of its member 's lives at a young age, fundamentally changing how they view the world. Without the group (the group here being MS-13,) would these gang members been violent, or polarized towards crime? Would they have a different view of MS-13? Or, on the other side, how would MS-13 be affected if it didn 't have certain instrumental people within it? How would it look if the “leader” was a different person with different ideals? These are all interesting to note and are integral to understanding how a group is oriented, and why the function as they …show more content…

For example episode 11 when a guy named Jason Robert physically attacks a girl named Megan in front of an audience , he behavior is considered deviance because he harms another person. Attacking another person and stalking is prime example that he is different from most people. Another example is episode season 15 episode 10 when detective Benson attacked and kidnapped by a murder. This broke into her apartment and held her captive for four days where he would tie her up and make her watch as he did unspeakable things to another. His behavior would be considered as deviance because what he does is unsocial and it violates what is considered normal in today’s society.
This is how MS-13 keeps its order, by creating examples out of people. Even though Chester and his friend were not killed, he still faced punishment for his act of betrayal. The other type of control would be to jump in their members. This shows the new recruits violence isn’t optional, and if you step out of line you will deal with the consequences. Specifically, the guys who are in jail because they betrayed the gang and want protection know if they step out of the building they are dead.
6. Incorrect Answer: E I chose E as my answer because I thought that a family’s “shoe-buckles” was a metaphor for generational family wealth. As a result, the narrator may have been denouncing the excess of the Dodsons families’ material wealth. This assumption is incorrect since the story indicates that the author was referring to actual shoe buckles, emphasizing the care that the Dodsons took in even the smallest of property.
a. Deviance: Page 194, the violation of norms (or rules or expectations). This gang is a deviant group of people because they are breaking the rules of law. They extort money from business owner for protection. They are taking over large areas of entire cities and they are expecting non-gang membered people to follow their rules or face the consequences.
In Wayward Puritans Erikson argues that there is no notable difference between people who participate in deviant acts and those who do not. Deviance therefore is a social construction; it is defined by what society deems normal. What is considered deviant in one society is not necessarily deviant in another. The label of deviance is conferred upon certain behaviors, often by those in power. Dominant groups in society set expectations for what is acceptable behavior, which helps to keep people in line with dominant group expectations.
“Society thinks we are monsters.” Mr. Antunez said at the beginning of the article Shuttling Between Nations, Latino Gangs Confound the Law. The following paper is going to take a close look at several aspects of Latino gangs and their effects on culture. The taboos and deviant acts that are committed by both groups. Actions the dominant culture has done to enforce the rules of society and, more closely, ways that the dominant culture has been deviant.
“Black Lives Matter is an ideological and political in a world Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for our demise” (). Why are activist groups consider a deviance act? To define deviance is “any behavior or physical appearance that is socially challenged and condemned because it departs from the norms and expectations of a group” (McCaghey,2008,5). Meaning that just by acting out as a group or a just one person who is displaying deviant behavior. From another perspective, Black Lives Matter could be considered as a Domestic/Foreign terrorism.
Deviance Sociologists general defines deviance as “an action that is perceived as violating a society’s or groups cultural norm”. Deviance can be perceived in many different ways. Vegetarians and Muslims are both groups that do not consume meat. Although these groups are not breaking the law. Their behavior is different than what is accepted to be normal.
Even seemingly barbaric gangs search for order in society and provide security and comfort for the impoverished. People are naturally inclined to help others and act socially, especially
Emily Herman Soc 101 Garth 31 March, 2015 Viewpoints on Gangs Gangs have been thought to be tyrants for many years. To most people all they can see are kids or adults who are nothing but criminals. However, no one really stops to think of the reasoning’s behind why a person may join a gang. Instead everyone sees what they want to see and nothing else. With this in mind, based on the perspectives people take, there may be many different ways to look at gangs.
1. How does Strain Theory define and explain deviance? Strain theory defines deviance as the situation whereby there exists a gap or difference between societal success goals and the determined means available to the society for achieving these goals. In a society, individuals share similar goals towards success and thus have agreeable means of achieving the same, however, when such an agreement is foregone such a society has a high rate of deviance.
Early on, MS-13 was a loosely organized collection of smaller gangs that focused on extorting local businessmen and small-scale drug trafficking operations. Unfortunately for law enforcement, MS-13’s operations have expanded past extortion, homicide and drug trafficking. Sonja Wolf finds that, MS-13 engages in robbery, auto theft, rapes, kidnappings, and the trafficking of women for sexual exploitation,” and that, “Over time, gang members have been increasingly implicated in robberies, the illegal possession or carrying of firearms, drug sales, rapes, and especially extortions and homicides. Gang youth have moved from levying minor taxes in their territories to running extensive extortion rackets. Shopkeepers, sex workers, students and teachers, taxi and bus companies must all comply with the requests, though the transport sector is most heavily affected.
Even though some members face incarceration the street culture is most often transferred into the prison system and gang operations continue which often results in hits being called on people from within the prison walls. Although a major concern of residents is the more organized and violent gangs, the start-up gangs also instill fear in residents when troublesome behaviors involve intimidation, vandalism, graffiti, and occasional drug sales (Weisel, 2002,
Gang activities have been increasing over the years from crimes ranging from robberies to homicides. In California, estimates were made by the Justice Department that approximately 175000 to 200000 persons were members of gangs. In the county of Los Angeles gang activities for over a period of five years accounted for over 23000 of the crimes that occurred.(Friedrichs. M. 1999). Gangs have become not only a problem for those communities where the gang's ar located but has become a problem for everyone.
Although the term deviance usually carried a negative characteristic in first impression trough out history, afterward the term positive deviance was also introduced and analyzed. To begin with according to (“positive deviance.org”2015), “Positive Deviance is established on the inspection that in every community there are certain individuals or groups whose uncommon behaviors and strategies enable them to find better solutions to problems than their colleagues, while having access to the same resources and facing similar or even worse challenges”. “Positive deviance somehow exceeds social expectations.
