In Cold Blood, by Truman Capote, was a non-fictional novel published in 1965. Written in four parts, Capote meticulously details the brutal 1959 murders of the recognized farmer Herbert Clutter, Bonie Clutter, Nancy Clutter and Kenyon Clutter in the small, once peaceful, city of Holcomb, Kansas. Throughout the book, while Capote sympathetically depicts the murders of the Clutter family, we also realize that the author has a strong sympathy for one of the murders called Perry Edward Smith. Although the novel was intended to be written in a journalistic form, Capote seems to fictionalize much of the information used to write the novel in order to add suspense and certain reactions from the readers. Evaluative Essay To perpend a certain book as an award deserving book with high qualify, the book would have to leave many critics in shock and awe. These certain award worthy books would have to connect to society and give a whole new viewpoint to the readers to gain recognition. In the story of In Cold Blood, Capote replaces the simplistic views of criminals lowered to an inhuman status with a new perspective considering these criminals as equal human beings. Although the book didn’t get the Pulitzer Prize, an award given to high quality journalistic writings, Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood deserves the Pulitzer Prize because the author gave an unique shock by giving a voice to vilifying figures in society.

In Cold Blood It all started on the night of November 14, 1959, when two young men came to Holcomb, Kansas. They first came to rob the Clutters, but when finding there was not ten thousand dollars in the house like they were told, they thoughtlessly killed all four of them, for only forty bucks and a little radio. The men were finally caught, but forced to stand on trial with people who already want the two men dead, which puts the town in favor of capital punishment, before the trial had even started. The two young men, Dick Hickock and Perry Smith, were sentenced to the death penalty. The book In Cold Blood, I believe, is for the capital punishment.

Most people think that murder is something that would never happen to themselves or anyone they know. They think of murder as a very serious and awful event that is not a common thing in life. Through the eyes of a picture perfect family and criminals with social aspirations, Capote describes the American Dream and introduces his audience to the idea that this ideal was no more than an illusion.
