He was also one the wealthiest men of his time and helped transform the steel industry. Andrew Carnegie could be considered to be a hero in many ways. He helped create jobs, transformed the steel industry and also helped other industries, and was an influential philanthropist. Many of the people at the time were poor and living in poverty. There weren't many jobs; and the one that they did have didn't pay enough to sustain a family.

Andrew Carnegie was a self-made millionaire (and in today’s money a billionaire) who rose from the bottom up. In 1835, Andrew Carnegie was born in the attic of a weaver’s cottage, located in Scotland. His schooling took place in a one-room building. Carnegie, along with his family, left Scotland for the United States in 1848 because of the poverty situation. The jobs he had in his early days in the United States include; a bobbin boy, a telegram deliverer, and a railroad job.

His family raised him in Allegheny PA where he worked himself up from being a factory worker, to telegrapher operator, to assistant telegrapher, to eventually superintendent of the railroad (Andrew). While he was employed at the railroad, Carnegie began dabbling with investments in oil where he brought in substantial income (Rags). Because of the huge success, he left the railroad industry to focus on other business ventures like the Keystone Bridge Company and Keystone Telegraph Company (installation of telegraph wiring in railroad tracks).

People tend to reach success in a number of different ways. Looking at the past, success was often reached in ways that would be looked at as both good and bad. Andrew Carnegie was very successful but reached that success at the expense of his workers, which is why many would refer to him as a robber baron today. Andrew Carnegie placed the workers of his steel company in a harmful working environment. These workers were on the job for twelve long hours, seven days a week, in dangerous working conditions.

Carnegie was considered a Robber Baron for many reasons. For example, he gained huge profits because of his workers low wages. In the excerpt, “Who was Andrew Carnegie,” the author said, “his steel workers were often pushed to long hours and low wages.” Workers worked in harsh conditions and received no benefits causing them to live in poverty with scarce food, clothing, and shelter. Workers were tired of the low wages and decided to go on strike.

Andrew Carnegie was one of the most famous and wealthiest American industrialist during the Industrial Age. He was a robber baron who made a fortune in the steel industry and applied vertical integration to his business. Carnegie contradicted his views as a robber baron because he supported, but destroyed many unions. This made many of his views unethical.
