Secondly, Texans fought in the Civil War to protect their states’ rights. Abraham Lincoln said in his first inaugural address “No state upon its own mere motion, can lawfully get out of the union”, but an article in the Texas State Gazette from 1860 says “No state can force another state either to remain or withdraw from it”. Finally O.M. Roberts, president of the Texas Secession said “The crisis upon us involves not only the right of self government, but the maintenance of a great principle in the law of nations”.(Document C) This is proof that Texans wanted to protect their states’

Texas only saw this as a positive. Sense this was in the mind set of the state at the time Texas had a lot of influence over others. This caused sectionalism to happen even more. Sectionalism was always a problem back then but it would tend to go away until Texas came into the situation. Joel states in his book that “Slavery was deeply embedded in the national experience and at the center of these sectional rumblings.”

Some still felt bitter towards Mexicans, but others did not share those same feelings. There was also some debate on whether Texas would be a slave state or not because while the minority of Texans were slaveowners, they controlled three-fourths of the wealth. There were also debates on where the border of Texas was. Many Texans did not agree on whether or not slavery should be legal and any person that spoke out against slavery was subjected to violence or even being murdered. On the brink of the Civil War there were disagreements of whether or not Texas should secede, but due to the way voting was done by Anglo men their voices were the only ones that were heard.

During the mid 1800’s ‘the controversy over the extension of slavery into western territories played a significant role in the coming of the Civil War. The issue of slavery had been a source of conflict in the United States since the country was founded, and tensions had been mounting in the decades leading up to the civil war. Issues that helped fuel this conflict was fighting between the states that wanted to decide whether a certain state were to be a slave state or not. This included states that were bought after the battles in Texas against Mexico. Along with this certain compromises were questions such as the Kansas Nebraska Act and the Compromise.

As stated in Document 5, “Many Southerners favored secession as part of the idea that the states have rights and powers which the federal government cannot legally deny. The supporters of states’ rights held that the national government was a league of independent states, any of which had the right to secede”. This shows how Southerners believed that they had every right to secede. They wanted to ensure that they lived in a country in which they would be free to live the way they wanted to. The federal government was unable to prevent this, since each state has inalienable rights and powers.

Between 1830 and 1860, Manifest Destiny and territorial expansion did more to divide America than it did to unite. While it was not the main for the divide of America that was shown in the South’s secession from the United States, it brought up many issues that ultimately led to the Civil War. These issues are shown in the annexation of Texas, the Mexican-American War that resulted from that, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Until 1836, the area of Texas was controlled by the Republic of Mexico and was a distant and irrelevant piece of land in most American’s minds. A few Americans had emigrated there from the South at the invitation of the Mexican government, but not many.
