The State of Texas was not justified in seceding from the United States because the United States (Union) gave Texas a chance to be a full slavery state, helped Texas economically and financially, and Texas could have used their geography and economy to support themselves and the United States. The United States (Union) gave Texas a chance to be a full-slavery state. Before Abraham Lincoln was elected president, he said that a country divided between slavery and free could not last and that the United States had to choose between either full slavery or fully free. (Document 7) After Texas heard this, they got a little nervous because Lincoln was known for being against slavery. After Lincoln got elected, the St ate of Texas got even more nervous and then seceded. (Document 8) Even though Lincon was known for being against slavery, there still was a chance that the people will vote for full slavery. If they had just waited for a while, they may have gotten what they wanted.. Texas was still in debt from the days of the Republic of Texas. (Document 1) With the Compromise of 1850, the United States supported Texas both financially and economically by giving them $10 million to help pay off the debt. (Document 1) Also with the $10 million, the United States put the fugitive slave law, which made the Northerners return the slaves to their original masters. (Document 1) Some people, such as Harriet Beecher Stowe, did not support the fugitive slave law and she wrote a book about how the fugitive slave law was unjust and not fair. (Document 6) Even though the United States gave Texas so much to help them with their debt, they still decided to secede. In addition to the United States supporting Texas with their debt and economically, Texas could have used their geography and economy to support themselves and the United
Though the Southern Representative did not want for this to happen they were overruled by Benjamin Franklin who signed his name on the petition to end the slavery that had been going around. This was one of the moments where the people of America did not lose hope in there government but took pride because they saw a change. Now some change is good if it follows the right morals, but what the people in today’s society are trying to change has gotten out of hand. Ellis also mention how it can be noticed that the government officials had always talked about slavery behind closed doors and that they did not speak openly about it.
Contradicting William jay 's slavery as a reason for the war, John D. P. Fuller proposes in his The Slavery Question and the Movement to Acquire Mexico, 1846-1848 that toward the start of the Mexican War, the common conviction was that domain procured from Mexico would enter the union with slavery, yet after sectional controversies had erupted, most Southerners turned out contrary to obtaining of new region. Although many of the people who supported the annexation of texas were slaveholders, they were not primarily motivated by the establishment of slavery in a new state rather it was for manifest destiny since also these southerners were from the southwest. The annexation raced many debates and conflicts and as Fuller said it was not
By annexing Texas, we shall not only create [slavery] where it does not exist, but breathe new life into it …" Looking into (Document C) we can also see a pro-slavery opinion from Sen.
In the south, people believed that each state should pick if they can legally own slaves, or no. According to Document B “ That in this free government that the servitude of the African race… is mutually beneficial to both bond (slave) and free justified by the experience of mankind.” In Texas they were pro-slavery, and didn't exactly care if the north did have slaves or not. Texas was agricultural back when the civil war broke
I believe that they want slavery to continue so the amount of farm work and production done is faster. Overall, slavery was a main cause in why the Texans truly fought in the civil
Secondly, Texans fought in the Civil War to protect their states’ rights. Abraham Lincoln said in his first inaugural address “No state upon its own mere motion, can lawfully get out of the union”, but an article in the Texas State Gazette from 1860 says “No state can force another state either to remain or withdraw from it”. Finally O.M. Roberts, president of the Texas Secession said “The crisis upon us involves not only the right of self government, but the maintenance of a great principle in the law of nations”.(Document C) This is proof that Texans wanted to protect their states’
Texas only saw this as a positive. Sense this was in the mind set of the state at the time Texas had a lot of influence over others. This caused sectionalism to happen even more. Sectionalism was always a problem back then but it would tend to go away until Texas came into the situation. Joel states in his book that “Slavery was deeply embedded in the national experience and at the center of these sectional rumblings.”
Some still felt bitter towards Mexicans, but others did not share those same feelings. There was also some debate on whether Texas would be a slave state or not because while the minority of Texans were slaveowners, they controlled three-fourths of the wealth. There were also debates on where the border of Texas was. Many Texans did not agree on whether or not slavery should be legal and any person that spoke out against slavery was subjected to violence or even being murdered. On the brink of the Civil War there were disagreements of whether or not Texas should secede, but due to the way voting was done by Anglo men their voices were the only ones that were heard.
During the mid 1800’s ‘the controversy over the extension of slavery into western territories played a significant role in the coming of the Civil War. The issue of slavery had been a source of conflict in the United States since the country was founded, and tensions had been mounting in the decades leading up to the civil war. Issues that helped fuel this conflict was fighting between the states that wanted to decide whether a certain state were to be a slave state or not. This included states that were bought after the battles in Texas against Mexico. Along with this certain compromises were questions such as the Kansas Nebraska Act and the Compromise.
As stated in Document 5, “Many Southerners favored secession as part of the idea that the states have rights and powers which the federal government cannot legally deny. The supporters of states’ rights held that the national government was a league of independent states, any of which had the right to secede”. This shows how Southerners believed that they had every right to secede. They wanted to ensure that they lived in a country in which they would be free to live the way they wanted to. The federal government was unable to prevent this, since each state has inalienable rights and powers.
This essay will explore the reasons as to how and why secession occurred and whether slavery was the main
First, they wanted to protect and preserve slavery. For example, they said “the African race is inferior and dependent”, (Doc B).And in another document, they said that they have to send the slaves to the mountains so the attackers won’t take them (Doc D). They wanted to do this because slaves were important to them and were needed to build and produce things. Second, is there love for Texas.
Texas fought in the Civil War to protect States rights, Love of Texas (sectionalism), and to keep slavery. Texas fought in the war to protect states rights. In document C, it said this, “This is a Union of equal states, and no state can force another either to remain in it or withdraw from it.” I think that it means no state is allowed to tell another what do or maybe boss
In document C it says, “This is a Union of equal states, and no state can force another state either to remain in it or withdraw from it.” This shows that the Union believed that they had a right to choose if they wanted to stay in the Union or not. Texas chose to fight for those rules and get slaves to help them with their jobs. Texas also wanted to secede and get away from the U.S. ,so they can have those slaves. Texans
Between 1830 and 1860, Manifest Destiny and territorial expansion did more to divide America than it did to unite. While it was not the main for the divide of America that was shown in the South’s secession from the United States, it brought up many issues that ultimately led to the Civil War. These issues are shown in the annexation of Texas, the Mexican-American War that resulted from that, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Until 1836, the area of Texas was controlled by the Republic of Mexico and was a distant and irrelevant piece of land in most American’s minds. A few Americans had emigrated there from the South at the invitation of the Mexican government, but not many.
