Currently in the 21st century, there are many different issues arising among very diverse categories. One major issue which is currently emerging is the contamination and depletion of our water resources throughout America. Throughout the news, one is bound to see a story on the Flint Michigan water crisis, however, this is not the first case of water contamination occurring in the United States. In the United States, contaminated water can be found from Florida all the way to California. Not only are some of these water sources considered unsafe, but also the limited amount freshwater source are also being depleted at alarming rates. Depletion is caused not only by citizens using the water for sustainability but also for big companies to bottle
The Flint water crisis has been a well known life-threatening issue for nearly three years, and yet has still not been solved. The problem began in April, 2014, when the city of Flint, Michigan switched their water supply to the Flint River in order to save money. Almost immediately after the switch of water source, residents complained about the quality of water, while city and state officials denied the possibility of an issue for months. As time went by, the supply pipes had corroded and lead began making its way into the water supply, potentially endangering the Flint population, as high blood lead levels are especially harmful to children and pregnant women, and can cause “learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and mental retardation,”
According to the article “How Tap Water Became Toxic in Flint, Michigan,” written by Sara Ganim and Linh Tran, the residents of Flint, Michigan highly disapproved of the new water source. Around 2 years ago, the city of Flint was forced to switch their water supply from Lake Huron to a more local source, Flint River. Before, this was not a big problem to the residents of Flint because they were told that the water they were drinking was harmless. However, people began to doubt that the water they were drinking was safe because it looked like sewage. Over time, new evidence began to arise claiming that the water contained massive amounts of lead and iron.
Water is the most important resource in the world. Without water, we would not be able to thrive. Water is essential for farming, businesses, and the general public. Florida, Georgia, and Alabama have been in a two-decade long argument over water use because it has been negatively impacting states’ communities. In the article, How the Florida-Georgia Water Fight Could Affect Atlanta, Molly Samuel discusses the water sources that are being fought over and the impacts these water sources have on the communities.
but we just find useless ways to waste it. Bottling water is one way of wasting it. After bottling billions of gallons of water a year, we waste at least 80 percent of it. “The entire nation consumes a bit more than 10 billion gallons of bottled water per year” (Hiltzik).
When concerning our drinking water it should be considered that pathogenic organisms may contaminate soil, as well as stick on to the sediments in the surrounding area; making it more tricky to clear completely. Nitrate poisoning is another large concern,
The use of the vignette creates a sense of dirtiness and corruption that alludes to the main purpose of the chapter—water pollution. Glennon claims that “water pollution is an acute national problem that threatens our existing water supply” (76). Existing problems that the author discusses in his chapter include: the collection of sewage and storm water in a single collection system, nitrogen fertilizer, and animal feeding operations. Robert Glennon effectively validates his
A subtropical wilderness with grass marshes, forests thick with trees hundreds of years old and hardwood hammocks (trees that only grow a few inches tall but packed very close together but can take up acres). Seems like a place to protect. Ever since the 1900 draining of the everglades, the ecosystem has shrunk by 50%. People did not see how important the Florida everglades where. The effect of the polluted water in the everglades is causing problems for both people and the inhabitants of the everglades.
Climate change, population growth, and outdated management threaten our water supply. Unless we learn to manage and conserve our Colorado Water better, we’ll be facing a dire water crisis. We fight to bring the needs of diverse communities into solutions to make sure our state has enough water for future generations. (Conservation Colorado) This organizations goal is to improve all of Colorado’s environmental issues one of them like specified earlier in the essay being water issues.
The Flint water crisis includes supplying insufficient water treatment to the people. The water was contaminated and included high level of leads which put people’s live in danger. The city switched into Flint River to overcome financial shortage to the city. Based on CNN, Flint River had poor quality and it degraded because of presence of fecal coliform bacteria presence, low dissolved oxygen, and toxic substances (CNN). These issues with lake should have been prevented the authorities to switch the water source of the city.
The local community does not care that dumping toxic waste, sewage, and runoffs affect marine life. People everywhere dispose of their toxic materials such as household, agriculture, and oil waste in the wrong way, and eventually it leads to pollution in the ocean. Toxic products in households are very harmful to the ocean if they are disposed of in the wrong way. Household materials such as chemical-based cleaning and disinfecting products, once put down the drain, go straight to the ocean, and pollute the water. Non- degradable products that are put down drains can damage sewage treatment processes, and contaminate nearby bodies of water.
Water Pollution: Harming the Human Health The release of chemicals affects water pollution in the Chesapeake Bay, affecting the health of the human population. There are several chemicals which are more common in the Chesapeake Bay than others. A growing concern for the Bay is the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus there is since it continues to grow each year.
The world’s freshwater supply is thinning out, and humans aren’t being careful with the precious amount of water that remains. The world may not have as much freshwater as one might think it does. 70% of the world is water (National Geographic). Of that 70%, only 2.5% of that is fresh (National Geographic).Even then, most of that 2.5% is not easily accessible (National Geographic). In the next 10 years, an estimated 1.8 billion people will be living in water scarcity (National Geographic).
To help the world we should now sell the water, which will make a big impact on the world. Firstly, once the government gets the
2% of earth’s fresh water is frozen in ice caps; and, only 1% of earth’s fresh water is available to consume. 2. Unfortunately for our planet, supplies of water are running dry at an alarming rate. The world’s population continues to soar; but, that rise in numbers has not been matched by an increase in supplies of fresh water. Let’s talk about what is going on around the world; I will mention to you just a few major cities, and show you how they are dealing with water shortage.
Water is the most important component found on the surface of the earth because it is source of life for living creatures. However, water pollution has become a global concern. Water pollution can have several forms from diverse sources. It is expected that there will be a lack of clean water in next few decades due to pollution. Nile river water in Egypt is the focus of attention of many studies due to many reasons.
