He points out that we need to fully understand rhetoric to be able to analyze an essay properly. He states that learning the art of persuasion can be difficult, but it will help break down an essay into parts. “An Entrance to the Woods” is an essay by Wendell Berry about the serenity and importance of nature in his life. The poem A Step Away From Them by Frank O’Hara has five stanzas written in a free verse format with no distinguishable rhyme scheme or meter. The poem uses the following asymmetrical line structure “14-10-9-13-3” while using poetic devices such as enjambment, imagery, and allusion to create each stanza. A Step Away From Them occurs in one place, New York City. We know this because of the lines, “On/ to Times Square, / where the sign/blows smoke over my head” (13-14) and “the Manhattan Storage Warehouse.”

The poem, The Harlem Dancer is written by Claude McKay in 1917. The poem starts with a prostitute on the stage of a nightclub dancing for the audience. The speaker says her voice is similar to a flute and that she is graceful while dancing. The speaker isn’t the only one that thinks the dancer is beautiful since the other patrons are throwing money and behaving like animals. I feel like this poem covers how sex workers are treated.
