The context of the great depression is world war 1 the great world was fought in europe leaving the us economy untouched this allowed the u.s to become a trading giant as they began to mass produce everything. After evaluating and weighing the evidence installment buying and the stock market crash were the major causes of the great depression. Before the great depression having debt was no longer shameful because of this people kept buying and buying, 3 out of 4 radios were on installment plans and 60 percent of automobiles and furniture were also on plans. They were buying faster than their income was expanding. As time went on it was only a matter of time before purchases would slow down, with these purchases slowing down the cutback slapped the whole economy (doc 6). With these new installment plans people were buying more unnecessary expensive things. Like, buying a 35,000 boat instead of the 10,000 when they work the exact same but the 35,000 has a few more details. But because, these people were on installment plans the …show more content…
In (doc 2) John T. Raskob says that if you just invest 15 dollars a month and invest in stocks they will get rich by the end of 20 years. But when the stock crashed everyone that invested lost all their money and life savings.(Doc 3) Is a New York Times article It says “stock prices slump 14,000,000,000 in nationwide stampede to unload; bankers to support the market today.” When the stocks slumped people ran to the bank to pull out their money but the banks also invested in the stocks so people were trying to take out more money then the bank had. (Doc 5) Investors kept buying stock to sell them for more than what they had originally bought to try and get rich quick. But, as the price kept going higher people stopped buying them cause the stocks worth to plummet and being less then what the original person had bought them for. This was the major reason for the great
Rising share prices would simply bring more people into the markets, convinced that it was easy money. In mid-1929, the economy stumbled due to excess production in many industries, creating oversupply. Essentially, companies were able to acquire money cheaply due to high share prices and invest in their own production with the required optimism. By 1933 the value of stock on the New York Stock Exchange was less than a fifth of what it had been at its peak in 1929. Business houses closed their doors, factories shut down and banks failed.
Everybody wanted to be part of it. Not till October 1929 when the stock market crashed. As more people invested in the stock market they hope to make a quick profit on a speculative rise in stocks (doc 5). According to doc 5 “stock prices were forced up by competitive bidding rather than by any fundamental improvement in business”. This meant people would invest in a company and when the company rises they would sell for profit.
The context of the Great Depression is the roaring twenties. At the end of world war one, a new era of prosperity came to America. At the heights of prosperity, the stock market exchange began to rapidly expand as more people began to trade. The Great Depression was caused by installment buying and the crash of the stock market. The first reason the Great Depression happened is that people were buying more than they can afford which is called installment buying.
The stock market crash was one of the major causes of the Great Depression. During the Great Depression, the American people were struggling. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the President at the time, had a plan to help the people. He called his plan the New Deal. Ultimately, the New Deal was successful
The Great Depression was a complex event caused by a variety of factors. The six factors of the Run on the Banks, the Stock Market crash, the uneven distribution of wealth, problems for business and industry, problems for farmers, and the overuse of credit all played a role in the start of the Great Depression. All of these factors were an important factor in helping start the Great Depression. However, the overuse of credit was the most important factor of them all because it led to people relying on loans, too many payments for the consumer to adequately keep up with, and the economy eventually drying up once the influx of money stopped.
The Great Depression started with the stock market crash of 1929. “In 1925, the total value of the NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE was $27 billion. By September 1929, that figure skyrocketed to $87 billion” (The Market Crashes 1). Stocks were being sold for way more than their reasonable value and that couldn’t go on indefinitely. Although more people in the U.S.owned stock than ever before, “90% of American households owned precisely zero shares of stock” (Sinking Deeper and Deeper 1).
The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression that took place during the 1930s. The article by Edwin Gay and pictures compiled by Cary Nelson are both descriptions of how the Great Depression was and the several impacts that it had on the American economy. The range of the great depression is unprecedentedly wide according to Edwin Gay. The great depression was believed to have started from the collapse of the US stock market in 1929. This was shown in a picture as compiled by Cary Nelson
The Great Depression was caused by speculation and installment buying, income maldistribution, and overproduction because each of these factors combined made the economy worse before and after the stock market crash, which led to The Great Depression. Speculation and installment buying helped caused The Great Depression because people were buying so much stuff on credit, when
The crash of the stock market on October 29 1929 was one of the main causes of the Great Depression. Black Tuesday brought to an end the roaring twenties and its wealthy people with their successful plans to become millionaires. The Great Depression was one of the deepest long-lasting economic downturn in the western history. Economists have the theory that the Great Depression was caused because of the Law of supply and Demand miscalculation, Say’s Law misinterpretation and the business cycle not being a cycle but more like a roller coaster. Therefore the Great Depression was caused by people not being able to interpret how economics work.
There were a variety of causes that caused the Great Depression, but the main cause that started it was a decrease in spending. This led to production decrease because manufacturers and merchandisers did not want to have unused items just sitting on the shelves. In October of 1929 the stock market crashed. The United States stock prices had reached levels that could not be justified by sensible predictions of future earnings. The results of this were catastrophic.
The Great Depression was an exceptionally abhorrent time period in the history of the U.S, and it left thousands without a job and or food to eat. This ghastly event was caused by many things, some of which included overproduction and underconsumption, the inability of banks and people to collect debt, and the stock market crash of October, 1929. The stock market crash was mainly caused by investors who bought shares on margin, and resulted in the value of common stock and shares dropping by almost 40%, resulting in the Great Depression. Buying on margin was essentially a system where instead of paying the whole amount when buying a stock, people paid a fraction of the price, and took a loan with their brokers to pay for the rest.
The Great Depression started in 1929, after years of a strong U.S. economy. After the first World War, Americans began to invest and use credit. The government also spent money on aiding other countries, like Germany and Austria, to get back on their feet after the war. With such a strong economy and more money flowing through it, Americans put more trust into investing. Investors dared to be more perilous with their money and invest in bigger funds, in turn, speculation became more apparent among them.
Nishat kazi (Muniya) 11th grade The Great Depression was one of the worst downturn of economy in the history that took place during the 1930s. It had a catastrophic effect in countries on both rich and poor. Though there are a lot of causes behind the Great Depression, the main three causes were-1.Bank failure 2.Stock market crash 3.laissez faire.
The stock market crashed because investors began buying stocks on margin, borrowing much from brokers who, in turn, borrowed from banks, who borrowed from the savings of depositors. This saturated the market, and brokers began selling their stocks, which led prices to decrease. Other brokers called their margins, which investors couldn’t cover. Brokers started selling stocks in larger amounts, which forced prices down even more. The bottom then fell out of the market.
