For example, In chapter called the ‘side you despise’ “One thing was certain now: She wasn't Alone out here” (166, Westerfeld). The quote shows that the author even states that tally isn't alone after not seeing any kind of life in the wilderness. It is an internal conflict because of the fact tally now has to worry who they are and what they want this will make it harder to find the smoke for tally. A universal conflict in the story is that friendship is more than beauty. For example, In the middle of the book “Tally ran until she reached the fire, skidding to a halt against its cushion of heat and smoke. She reached up to unclasp the pendant’s chain” (281 westerfeld). The action of tally throwing the pendent showed that she cared more about the friends she had made and the people that she had met then those who had promised to make her pretty she didn't care about how she looked anymore because of the fact that she had everything she needed right in front of her. The actions of the character shay prove that her personality is very mature towards the smoke then new pretty town. For example, in the beginning of the
An interaction between Tally and her friend Shay makes clear the irony of becoming “pretty”. “You’re still yourself

When people turn sixteen, they get in an operation that makes them look pretty. Uglies is a science fiction novel by Scott Westerfeld. The book is set in a dystopian world where everyone at the age of 16 gets an operation to be turned from an 'Ugly' to a 'Pretty'. Uglies tells the story of Tally Youngblood who has mixed feelings about becoming 'Pretty'. A character I like in this novel is Shay, a friend of Tally's. I like her because she is different from anyone else in the city of 'Uglyville' and she is not afraid to show it.
There are several instances of imperative conflict in the book, Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. Shay confronts Tally about David’s apparent favoritism of Tally after becoming upset. “Shay chewed her fingernail, shaking her head. ‘He doesn’t talk to me that much anymore. Not since you showed up.
Amanda Schaut Evans/Bendick ELA ½ 22 February, 2023 In 2021, 60% of young people have been excluded by their peers and as a result changed their physical appearance. This creates the idea that the only way to fit in, is to be good looking. The same is in the book, Uglies, where everyone is expected to get a surgery when they turn 16 to turn ‘pretty’ or perfect. Tally is told that she can’t turn pretty unless she betrays her best friend, Shay, and finds a hidden city full of uglies called the ‘smoke’.
It also talks about Ishmael's rehabilitation after his great escape. It is an intense story of the devastating events that happened to
Beauty, and you can find a lot of examples of this throughout the novel. One specific example is Mr. Derby’s influence on the plantation. In Chapter 22, Mr. Derby lashed out at Amari because she had tripped over his legs and dropped the leftover blackberry pie onto the pale carpet. He yelled at Lena to go grab his whip, and when he had it in his hand, time seemed to slow. " Polly inhaled and held her breath.
But over the course of the play, shifts those values to what truly mattered. This allows the reader to understand what’s truly important

Tally, an almost 16 year old girl is given the choice to have something that she has always wanted but will she take it at, even if its at her friends expense. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld demonstrates that sometimes you betray and lie to the ones that care and trust you to get what you desire most. In the beginning of the book Tally says this to her friend Shay, “ You’re the one who’s running away” (p.86) The author is showing that Tally is agitated that Shay has decided to run away from her problems instead of confronting them. This shows betrayal because Shay is betraying Tally, who trusted her to do the right thing, by running away and leaving her alone.
This is why the mentioning of those two pieces during the story was so important because they were the reason Montag followed the path he did. Montag starting reading with those books, so those were the ones he remembered and could bring to help produce modification to society. Montag chose books over normal making him go along the path God chose for him in the first place. Revelation and Ecclesiastes gave him the motivation to follow this route and generate the thought that he and the other men will be the ones to give knowledge back to people; knowledge of books. This proves why
