When Barbie Is Bad

Barbie dolls have been around for about 56 years. She is famous for being fabulous. Many girls have had a barbie doll to play with as a child and looked up to her. Barbie has had positive and negative results on young girls, but mainly negative. Barbie is a bad role model by sending the unrealistic image of perfection through having the perfect body, perfect life, perfect house and car, and the perfect clothes.
Barbie has a so-called ‘perfect’ body. If Barbie’s proportions were blown up to full size, then her waist would be a petite 16 inches. She would hardly have enough room for fully functional organs. In 1965 Mattel came out with a “Slumber Party Barbie” set. This set had come with a book called How To Lose Weight. One of these tricks was “Don’t eat.” Sending the message that if you do not eat you would be skinny and acceptable. A scale permanently set to 110 pounds also came in the set. Barbie would be considered anorexic. Barbie is also usually portrayed as Caucasian and blonde. Which adds even more to the message, that you have to look a certain way. Dr. Hains says, “Barbie’s beauty ideal is unhealthy and damaging.” (“5 Reasons to”) To achieve these proportions a girl, or even guy, may stop eating and become anorexic to reach these unrealistic goals. Barbie’s clothes are fashionable and expensive. After playing with and dressing up Barbie, kids are going to want the same fashionable, expensive clothes. These girls will ask or beg for the most expensive and popular clothes, trying to get the full Barbie closet look. But by looking at Barbie’s clothes you can tell that the short dresses and heels makes girls want to grow up faster and to not dress appropriately.This too falls under the lusting after material objects category.
