The telling emotions expressed in Patrick Gilmore's song, “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again,” stand out to provide an important insight into the ending of the Civil War. We hear too often about the feelings of the men and women on the battlefield; sometimes, people forget that these brave fighters had families. While the soldiers’ morale serves as an important indicator to the outcome of the war, the attitude of their relatives at home also plays an important role in determining a winner. When commoners in the village will “ all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home,” they indirectly show their tiredness for the war (Gilmore 7). By hoping for their friend or relative to return, the people want to end the war. Furthermore, the folk in the song want “love and friendship on that day” that Johnny would return (Gilmore 22). Hence, Gilmore’s song opens an important window that shows the general demand for a finish to the conflict. …show more content…
Gilmore states that the people would try to please “the warrior’s heart”(27). In addition, a “laurel wreath [that] is ready” hints at a victory; victories come from conflicts (Gilmore 19). Since Gilmore composed the piece during the Civil War, this evidence reinforces the relationship between the war and the song (“When”). Thus, the conflict initiated the hope for the return of a soldier, Johnny. The conflict and the war created the emotions in the song, forced the people to hope for Johnny’s return, and provided a reason for Gilmore to compose the piece. Furthermore, the song shows, links, and relates the effect of a war on the common people. Hence, the piece illuminates the far reaching consequences of
Before the war had started his brother had introduced him to the cassette tapes and he explained how much he cared for them by saying “I loved the dance and particularly enjoyed the lyrics… they were poetic and it improved my vocabulary”(Beah 6). Rap music has affected his psychological state of mind and throughout any point in time, he was feeling emotion. Beah and his brother went on a trip to see their grandmother and mother which was a total of sixteen miles. When they arrived with their grandmother, she made them some food and took care of them. During the time of the war, Beah reflected on his grandmother and her home a lot to try and unfocus on all of the blood and dead bodies he had witnessed back in his hometown.
While his fellow soldiers are celebrating the news of marching to war, he is overcome with worry and doubt over his ability to remain steadfast in the face of the Confederate army. He ends up falling victim to his fear and retreating from the battle against orders. After a time, he finds out that his regiment won the battle that he ran from. He decides to return, but remains guilty and fears the mockery and disrespect that he will receive from his comrades. During his journey back to the camp, he encounters a line of soldiers returning home.
With all of these soul-shattering, life-changing conditions, it is less of a war and more of a test of strength for the soldiers, here at Valley Forge. Some men were going home and not returning. Other men just completely deserted. Even George Washington’s position was uncertain, the members of congress didn’t trust him. Life at Valley Forge was obviously horrible, and the ugly truth is that it wouldn’t get much better.
In the short story “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” by Ray Bradbury, the author introduces us to the character the General. The General reveals the trait of fearfulness. The General approaches Joby as is lying down and questions Joby if he is the drummer boy. The General is curious about how Joby joined the army. He then answers his own question by stating that it’s
The reading “Popular music and the civil war” explained the heavy influence that music had leading up to and during the civil war. Music was used to express the way Americans, those in the north or south, were feeling during this time. Through their lyrics, writers and singers were able to convey their feelings on topics such as being separated from loved ones, losing someone, patriotism for the confederates or the union, and anything else that related to war time. Many of these songs appealed to the Americans because they could easily relate to what the lyrics were saying. Therefore, songs were being greatly produced during this time because people were purchasing the music, whether that was by going to see the performance of it, or buying
The novella Generals Die in Bed was written by Charles Yale Harrison who was born in Philadelphia and raised in Montreal. Harrison fought in World War 1 with the Canadian army and later became a writer in New York City. Generals Die in Bed is a fictional novella based on Harrison’s personal experience with the army that mostly takes place in France from the early part of the war until 1918. The story follows a private throughout his time on active duty that offers a brutally honest depiction of the war trenches during World War 1. As the novella progresses, we gradually see the narrator’s growing hatred for war.
In the short story, “Because My Father Always Said He Was the Only Indian Who Saw Jimi Hendrix Play ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ in Woodstock”, Victor talks about his father who fought in the Vietnam War. He describes one day where he and his father discuss war and peace. Victor’s father says, “And besides, why the hell would you want to fight a war for this country?
“So the first thing that the war has done to the family is to give it not only a fresh popularity, but a deepened honor.” ("War and the Family"). With knowing this it can show how war can bring families together, the reason why this quote is important is because when Kathleen asked her father if he has ever killed anyone it made him think about his actions and what he had to do to be where he is today, with his daughter in his arms so I believe he is glad what he did so he could hold his daughter in his arms. The way the war has affected his family life was a positive impact, he realized how grateful he was that he pulled the pin on that grenade so he could be where he is today, and not on the other side When we are at war does it make us feel safe, how does it impact the family member that has troops in it, how will war affect
I couldn't hear the words, but I could hear the sound—his heavy, hard voice going on and on. Then there was Sam's voice and he was shouting, too, and then Father again”, (Collier and Collier). It also creates death which results in permanently split families apart. This shows how war tears and breaks families apart. Splitting families apart is the final reason why war is futile.
Perhaps no one were expecting the secession of eleven states and creation of Confederate States of America in 1861 would be the beginning of a civil war that lasts four years and takes so many lives. Although the election of President Lincoln and slavery could have been the causes of the Civil War, the soldiers’ motivation in enlisting themselves for this war; depending on the geographic location and the time of the enlistment, could vary and partially or even totally be something different. Considering soldiers’ motivations variety and changes based on location and time factors during the four year civil war, this paper by looking for clues in soldiers’ letters as a precious and reliable source, claims the “community pressure” as the dominant
Mr. Patch-Withers grumbled, with a flushed face. ‘How do you expect our boys to be as precise as that thousands of feet up with bombs weighing tons!” (Pg 10 chp.1)In war innocent people will die and you can't do anything about it. In conclusion you now see the theme war is unforgiving by the three reasons war affects friendships, changes lives, and war takes lots of lives. War affected Gene and Finny's relationship, war changed life by having to draft or enlist, war kill lots of people by the bombs and gunfire.
Moreover, the two transitions between the three verses (0:52-1:10; 1:43-2:00) also prove compelling. First, the electric guitar has a high pitch sound and it is distorted thus generating a sound that feels almost chaotic. This combination of sounds may be a reference to the general confusion that people felt towards the outcome of the Vietnam War during the 1960s. Moreover, even though the instruments build up in intensity, it feels like they never truly unleash the frustration and anger that characterizes the lyrics; this choice could be an allusion to Hendrix 's anti-violence beliefs. Therefore, not discharging all the pent-up resentment could be his way of suggesting that violence is not - and will not - be the solution to anything, neither in a war nor in a song.

After the soldiers return home, they have to fight a war between their consciousness and the disorder. In addition, they have to deal with the guilt and death of others. A poem that can relate to this is called, Hurt, by Nine Inch Nails. In the poem, the character has to deal with the pain and memories of others. The poem states, “Try to kill it all away
He then contrasts between the bomber’s view to the civilians’ view from the ground. The bombers view is recognized from a plane filled with ammunition. This suggests the bombers are carefree of their acts committed, but the civilians are petrified for the safety of their lives due to the uncertainty of the attack which is to occur. The effect on readers is that while reading the poem they begin to notice the different views of the bombers and civilians while experiencing war. Also, the readers tend to realize the savagery conveyed by the
