Who Is The Villain In The Crucible

Imagine being accused of witchcraft and you have know idea why you're accused. In the Crucible, by Arthur Miller, In the village Salem, Abigail william has started rumor and accusation. Because of her of Accusing, it has led to many innocent lives put to death. This was one of the most dreadful times of Salem. Fear and Falsehood has been the main problem which led to Salem being corrupt.

Abigail is most likely the epitome of crazy. In the beginning of the play, she commits actions in the woods that are beyond suspicious. She was kicked out of the Procor house by Elizabeth due to suspicion of Adultery, and she is constantly lying profusely to cover herself up. Abigail is to blame for Salem's problems because she’s the one who accused everyone of witchcraft, including Elizabeth. By spilling all these accusations, Abigail turned Salem into a boiling pot of rumor and hatred.

When you think of Abigail Williams you think of a evil girl. She will kill to make sure she doesn’t get in trouble. Abigail and group of girls danced in the woods naked and Abigail drank a blood charm. Abigail threatens the girls that she will come “in the dark of the black of some terrible night” if they mention what happens to anyone (1.1.1244) By looking at The Crucible, one can see that Abigail Williams develops the theme of reputation, which is important because people who fear of losing their reputation spread hysteria.

Abigail is a mirror reflection to this point she is extremely talented to convince her innocence in a false situation. In the play crucible this was proved by many actions. Abigail started witchcraft; she was the one leading girls and convincing them to come with her. Yet she acted innocent in front of Danforth and reverend hale they believed her innocence and actually looked up on her. While witch crafting she held a dead chicken and called on Elizabeth to die hoping her wish would come true proctor knew about the situation, again it didn’t change his feelings towards her.

She managed to infiltrate herself into the justice system and convince the court of her lies, and then the court forces the people to either accuse neighbours or friends or to risk being hanged. Mass hysteria takes on the village,changing the social landscape completely, destroying friendships,families and taking human lives. Abigail just sits by through all of that, being more motivated by seeing her plans succeed and she enjoys the power her lies obtain her. This exemplifies that Abigail does not have love or simple lust, she is not just a bad person, but that she has pathological obsession and is living in her own mind, still thinking that John will come back to her and that would be the ultimate fulfillment of her

Abigail didn’t have the perfect the normal teenage life you would assume she would have. She is stuck living with her uncle who is a reverend in town and that nobody really actually likes. To top it off, from what we gathered from the text, Abigail has no real or true friends to turn to. Abigail even tries to explain this to John Proctor, but John doesn’t comfort her. John tells Abigail that he thought many times to come and see her.

Abigail defies all judgements against innocence as she is the driven evil force in The Crucible. Arthur Miller shows Abigail Williams to instinctively defend herself, as it is the humane reaction when accused of wrongdoing. It is common to tell a lie but, the intention of sabotage is a different story. Abigail had many tricks up her sleeve to manipulate the court. Her purpose to convince the town of her innocence was one of many.

And you know I can do it; I saw Indians smash my dear parents’ head on the pillow next to mine, and I have seen some reddish work done at night, and I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down!” (Miller 12). This quote shows how Abigail has changed and what she’d do if she was confronted with such a situation. She made the decision quickly and opted to only save herself. Over the course of the book it gets represented pretty well that she is capable of doing everything to hold up her reputation.

She is able to manipulate others, for example, all her friends and the whole town. In addition, she obtains control over all of them and sends nineteen uninvolved people to their deaths. On the surface, Abigail is may seem to be one-dimensional in her lack of remorse or empathy yet it comes to be understood later in the play that there underlying forces that drive Abigail to take the actions that she does.

One common question about The Crucible is how Abigail Williams is the most evil force in the play. It is shocking when a girl talks back to authority out of disagreement, but few go as far as Abigail Williams. While she may only be 11 years old, her manipulative and vengeful personality allows her fool her Uncle and later turns a whole town against each other. She is really a master of manipulation and trickery, and she gets herself into affairs without punishment and has threaten all who oppose here. Abigail really is the devil in human form.
