ELA 3A Kingsley Ekechukwu The Crucible Essay Mrs. Davis 10/23/15 Who really is the Villain? Out of all of the main characters in the play “The Crucible” Abigail Williams is the least complex and yet the most villainous. She is the villain of the play. She is more evil than any other character in my eyes than even Judge Danforth; who cares only for himself and his position as judge. Abigail lies, and is manipulative to everyone who gets in her way. She wrongly accused Elizabeth Proctor to get to John. She robs Parris of his money and leaves town. She even gets people killed even though they did not do anything wrong. She will do anything to get what she wants. Throughout the whole play, Abigail’s reasons for doing the things that she does never go much deeper than jealousy and lust. She has a strong desire to have revenge on Elizabeth Proctor. Although Elizabeth has done nothing wrong to her, at least not without a valid reason. After her affair with John Proctor, john was embarrassed and ashamed of what had happened. Abigail on the other hand regretted nothing. This is during act 4. Abigail robs Parris and leaves town. No one is entirely sure of her whereabouts but Parris believes that she and Mercy boarded a boat. The destination of the boat is also unspecified. This shows herself centered nature. This also goes to show her childish nature. How she steals from her uncle and runs away. It is worth mentioning though some things about Abigail’s past and background. Although nothing can excuse her actions they do make them a tad bit easier to understand. Abigail is an unmarried orphan and it is solely because of this that everyone in her community looks down on her so. And also because she is part of a Puritan community. Knowing this makes her actions more justifiable but not
