In 1939 to 1945, the Allies’ and Nazi navies fought for control of the Atlantic Ocean. The Allies consisted of the United States, Great Britain, Soviet Union, and Canada. The Axis side was made up of mostly Germany, but also Italy. The Allies wanted to use the Atlantic Ocean in order to supply the British in their fight against the Nazis. The Germans were not going to let this happen so that is how the Battle of the Atlantic began. The Germans used submarines that were called U-boats and other warships that destroyed Allied ships. The Battle of the Atlantic was an important battle that played a big role in World War II; the Allies were victorious over the Germans, which allowed them to keep Great Britain supplied, and they perfected the use …show more content…
The U-boats were the main reason that the Allies were unable to supply the British and the Allies main priority should be to find a way to stop the deadly submarines (Churchill). Since the Allies defeated the Nazis and discovered a way to counter the U-boats, they were able to supply Great Britain. The control of the Atlantic of the Allies was an important impact on the Allies winning World War II (Milner). The military supplies that were being transported from North America to Europe were going to help the British to fight. “We shall definitely be better off so far as shipping is concerned at the end of 1943 than we are now” (Churchill). Winston Churchill was correct because by the end of 1943, the Allies had full control of the Atlantic Ocean and were transporting military supplies to Great Britain. If it was never for the transported military supplies to a Great Britain the Allies would have never won World War II. Without this victory, Germany would have control of Europe. This historic Battle of the Atlantic was for the a monumental conquest for …show more content…
The Battle of the Atlantic shifted the dynamics of who was in control of the Atlantic Ocean. Since the Allies had control of the Atlantic Ocean they were able to stop the Nazis from taking over all of Western Europe. They were able to deliver supplies to the British so they could fight for Europe and change what was to be the outcome of World War II. Technology was also a substantial part of the Allies being able to deliver the military supplies. Radar and sonar were used to find the location of the U-boats and defeat the Germans. In conclusion, the Battle of the Atlantic was the most important battle of World War II because it gave the Allies control of the Atlantic Ocean so they could transport supplies needed by the British so they could be able to stop the
The Higgins Boat The Higgins boat was a very important aspect of Louisiana, the United States, and World history. Many people, including General Dwight D. Eisenhower, believe that without the boat the United States would have never been able to land on an open beach. Eisenhower even called the creator of the boat, Andrew Higgins, “The man who won the war for us.” This The boat had a very unique design and was usedenabled victory on the very historic
It also gave them a way to be able to do stuff with out the rest of the enemy 's knowing. Just before the end of the war the Germans sent two submarines with disk recorders into the Baltic Sea. The two submarines finally reached the mainland and emptied all the supplies on it. It also provided hardware for the war. What was taking place in Antarctica after the war ended?
World War l DBQ World War l was one of the most dreadful war America has ever seen. The Great War was fought in Europe with the following countries: France, Russia, Germany, the U.S., and plenty of others. Since this war is known as the bloodiest war America has ever seen, it leads to a bigger question: what was the cause of the Great War? Four of the main causes were, the alliance systems, nationalism, imperialism, and militarism. Alliance systems contributed to the underlying cause of World war l because different countries had different alliances with different countries.
It gave Canada a voice in trade agreements that helped Canada trade with other countries WWII also shaped Canada by giving it an industrial boom. Canada provided Great Britain with war materials, such as; aircraft and small arms needed to fight the War, plus food to feed the British people when they were cut off by the German U-boat blockade. According to the Canadian Encyclopedia: “There was large production of aircraft, including Lancaster bombers; and the greatest triumph of the program was in the field of military vehicles, of which 815,729 were made.” Britain could not pay for it all and by the end of the war, they owed Canada over three billion dollars. This industrial boom is one reason Canada has been able to have such a
The Submarine is a vessel that can function both above water as well as underwater (Submarine). The first submarine was built by the dutch inventor Cornelius van Drebel, and its design was first refined during the American Revolutionary War (Submarine). The submarine was used in many wars, but did not show great success until World War I and World War II (Submarine). It was during these wars that germany began calling their fleet of submarines U-Boats. The U-Boat during world war I was the same as most experimental submarines except for the fact that it included torpedoes for weapons and was built stealthier than the earlier submarines (U-boat).
The Allied and Axis Powers were the two groups of countries that fought against each other in World War II. Each group had three main countries. The United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union were the leaders of the Allied Powers, while Germany, Italy, and Japan were the elite of the Axis Powers. France was also an important country for the Allied Powers, but it was conquered quickly at the beginning of the war. The leader of the United States during World War II was Franklin D. Roosevelt and later on Harry S. Truman, and Winston Churchill was the prime minister of Great Britain at the time.
Based on the measures taken by Churchill regarding the French Fleet and Franco-German armistice, he pursued the issue aggressively, and it made sense from a military standpoint. From the perspective Churchill, the possibility of Germany having possession of the fleet presented a danger to the Royal Navy. Although the Royal Navy held the title as the largest and most powerful navy in 1940, there were vulnerabilities that the enemy could exploit.9 The Royal Navy suffered significant damage in previous military operations, particularly at the Battle of Dunkirk, the Norwegian campaign, and the North Atlantic convoy duty.10 Some of Britain’s bigger ships were also spread out in order to guard against German service raiders.11 Additional factors
Now that Russia dropped out, all the German troops moved toward the Western front. This was a big blow to the Allies. If it weren 't for the U.S, the Allies would 've probably lost the war. We gained a lot of technical knowledge and income from our participation.
The European and Pacific Theatre There were many battles in World War II, all of them being important and having different outcomes. Two main theaters we are focusing on are going to be the European Theatre where the Invasion of Normandy took place, along with the Pacific Theatre where the Attack on Pearl Harbor occurred. Both events had major impacts on the outcome of World War II, along with all the other battles we encountered. If ether of these battles turned out differently, America may not have become the amazing beautiful place it is today. The battle of Pearl Harbor occurred early morning in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 7, 1941.
The enigma code played a big role in world war 2 due it being used by the Germans to communicate with each other and to send their plans to the army bases and German commanders. The breaking of the enigma code made the Allis finally one step ahead of the German troops. The enigma code had to be kept a secret by the British so the Germans wouldn’t find out about it being broken. The breaking of the enigma code changed the war drastically by allowing the Allis to know the Germans moves body During the war great Brittan fort in a battle called “the battle of the Atlantic”. In this battle they took over a German U-boat, inside they found the machine that was receiving the German codes.
The United States, Britain and Canada were not short of any weaponry and had more troops, vehicles and ships than the opposing forces which proves why it was the biggest seaborne invasion force to ever be constructed. This also made it easier for our troops to cover the German terrain, therefore making it another important factor that lead our men to victory. The success of Operation Fortitude also allowed for the deception of the German army and ultimately made the opposing troops set up military fronts in places the Allied forces would not end up attacking. This devious yet well-planned distraction, lead the Germans to focus on the area of Pas-de-Calais which kept some of their strongest forces away from the beaches of Normandy and the Allied troops until the month of July. The fact that the Allied forces were also able to get ahold of German information and decode certain plans, also added to our benefit during the battle.
The allies had more workable strategy that enabled them to win the Second World War. It is observed that the Allies and Axis powers differed in terms of their number of troops. The combined military power of the Soviet Union, France and the Great Britain resulted in a large number of troops. The troop exceeded the Central powers and were well equipped to fight the war. However having a larger army is not a guarantee to winning a war.
One of the largest threats to the Allies was an attack on their ship convoys, Putting a huge emphasis on getting Enigma broken. If the Allies could locate in advance where German u-boats would be, they could direct their ships, transporting critical supplies from North America away from the German u-boats. The British soon got ahold of one of the Enigma machines when Commander
One of the major ways US forces combatted the U-Boat was by the use of Convoys. The Convoy system is a very old technique that was first revived to great effect during World War I by the US and its allies (Fontenoy, “Convoy”). The convoy system worked by simply grouping together ships to protect one another from a threat as a few ships working together to fight off a threat is better than one lone ship fighting off this threat (Fontenoy, “Convoy”). Convoys worked specifically well on U-Boats because U-Boats were built for offense and not for defense and so a few well placed shots could sink a U-Boat which was easier to provide with a few ships than just one. The convoy system had to be brought out again during World War I and World War
Robert Vangorden 3 Reasons Why the U.S Joined W.W.1 1,195 people were killed on Friday May 7th, 1915. A boat was shot and sunk by a German submarine, with only 756 survivors after the wreck.
