Reasons why the North Prevailed The South didn't like the North attempting to change their economic means and as a result all the States seceded forming the Confederacy. There are many reasons that caused the civil war. Three main reasons that caused the American Civil war was slavery, states’ rights, Sectionalism. The North prevailed because of Abraham Lincoln, the EmancipationProclamation and how industrialized the north was compared to the south. Congress passed a law that kept new states admitted to the country from being slave states. Every single slave state voted against this law, yet it was still passed because the government was dominated by the Republicans. “Sink or swim, live or die, survive or perish, the part of Mississippi is …show more content…

Abe Lincoln decided he must mobilize the military to fight the rebels in order to protect the Union of the United States. According to the Constitution, only Congress may declare war. It was certain advantages however, inherent in the North that inevitably told the tale of victory. Ulysses S. Grant’s military strategies succeeded because Union's manpower and economic resources would survive losses but the Confederate could not. “The resources of the enemy and his numerical strength, was far inferior to ours. But an offset to this we had a vast territory with a population hostile to the government” (Ulysses grant letter chapter 12), as the North invaded the south, the south lost control of territories essential for war effort. Towns and resourced were pillaged. Without the resources Southern war needs could not be met. Such as clothing, food, and shelter. Also, the south lost their home court advantage when they couldn’t rely on the thousands of African Americans they slaved. They didn’t have nationalism and they lacked full civilian support. Therefore Abe was a stronger leader than Davis. South had problems because of original states' rights argument. Many southerners left the army because of their family issues. The wives of the men at war were working and struggling to make a living while the men were away at the losing battle. Clearly the North had a distinct advantage in its ability to produce soldiers and supplies. The South counted on the North not having the stomach to stay in the war due to families too. They counted on the Union eventually giving up and allowing them to secede.
