As society continues to evolve and change, education must keep up with the times in order to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world. One subject that I think should be added to the high school curriculum is mental health and wellness. Mental health is an important aspect of overall health and well-being that often gets overlooked in traditional education. By adding a mental health and wellness class to the high school curriculum, students would be equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to maintain their mental health and well-being and support their peers in doing the same.

By adding a mental health and wellness class to the high school curriculum, students would be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to manage their mental health and well-being as their lives constantly develop. As a highschooler, I would propose the development of mental health courses in standard curriculum by emphasizing the importance of mental health and well-being, and how it affects every aspect of life, including academic performance, relationships, and overall health. Likewise, I would explain how a mental health class could help students understand and manage their own mental health circumstances in healthy manners. Provided the overwhelmingly high amount of statistics on the lack of mental health awareness, the increasing need for mental health education could not be more clearly needed. With the benefits of mental health education, including reduced rates of mental health problems and improved academic performance, students could learn to cope with and overcome some aspects of mental health that have been hindering them. Common misconceptions such as the stigma that people with mental health issues are abnormal or mentally insane pollute the opportunities for struggling citizens to achieve help. I always assumed that someone’s health could only be treated by a doctor. Nonetheless, as my education flourished I soon realized that programs that focus on preventing adverse health outcomes could reduce the incidence of disease. Furthermore, public health provided the opportunity to develop prevention programs to assist those who suffered from mental illness. To learn this was not only exciting, it provided a break in the current gap of mental health prevention programs currently being offered in my county’s school districts.
The stigma of mental illnesses has caused others to forget the seriousness and severity of it, especially those suffering from it. Eliminating this stigma would help in educating others and further recognize mental illnesses as any other
Mental health is a state of psychological well-being. According to World Health Organization (WHO) mental health includes "subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, intergenerational dependence, and self-actualization of one's intellectual and emotional potential, among others." (Organization, WHO 2001) However, cultural differences, race, ethnicity, personal background, subjective assessment, and socioeconomic status all affect how mental health is defined. This variation in definitions of mental health between different sects of our society further causes drift in methods of treatment, and may cause the burden of mental health to be greater on some cultures.
Throughout recent years, mental illness has become a belittled and “taboo” topic in a multitude of different societies. As a result, a majority of the world’s population isn’t exactly clear as to how one should approach those suffering from mental instability. Unlike physical illness, where an entire system of doctors and hospitals and medical research developed in order to cater to those who were physically ill, mental illnesses do not get nearly as much attention. Some would argue that a physical illness proves to be significantly more detrimental to one’s day to day life. However, observation of mentally ill individuals proves that mental illness can be as equally debilitating (you probably know someone in your life who has died from the
To bridge the gap, the underlying mental illnesses that are not addressed cause more significant damage to others which results in more mental illnesses. The access to care and treatment is limited to Natives which is what I want to change. Currently, most Native Americans cannot seek adequate treatment due to economic barriers, they cannot pay for doctors or subsequent pills. Additionally, access to mental health services can be limited due to location, health insurance and the lack of awareness. By going to Dartmouth I hope to expand these ideas of mental health awareness because it’s results could be an increase in Natives finishing high school and college creating a more educated generation.
