Most Courageous Character To Kill A Mockingbird is a book written by Harper Lee that shows numerous situations involving symbolism and courage. Atticus Finch is a character who kept his own beliefs throughout any event that occurred. Standing up for Tom Robinson and others while raising his children, Atticus shows the most courage by following his moral beliefs and not caring about what others think of him. A rabid dog conveying the symbolic meaning of prejudice and racism appears in Maycomb. This event forces Atticus amid the dog and the people he loves. Therefore, he had to shoot and kill the dog. This case involves a black man accused of raping a white woman. The case is really pressuring Atticus into actually fighting for what he believes is right. To prove this, on page 101 it states, “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.” The act of taking this case is very courageous, because it is him and a black person against a majority white town and Mr. Finch knows this. However, very few people would be able to look at the world in a minority’s perspective during this time, therefore there were some supporters. Evidence from the text on page 100 aforementioned, “If I didn’t, I couldn’t hold up my head...couldn’t represent this county...couldn't tell you or Jem not to do something.” This ties to Mr. Finch following his morals, because if he does not try he would not feel like he deserves what he …show more content…
Scout might be one thought to have the most courage. To support this, one piece of courageousness from Scout would be found on page 26 and it states, “The Cunninghams never took anything they can’t pay back.” This is when she tried to defend Walter to Miss Caroline. Scout’s courage differs from Mr. Finch’s because he is the person that teaches Scout to be able to obtain courage. Also because, though Scout may not know it, he looks to others because they have courage too. For example, on page 149 Atticus tells his children that Mrs. Dubose stopping her addiction is what real courage is. Therefore, with all things considered, Atticus would be the character that holds the most courage in the
Atticus Finch displays true moral courage when he agrees to defend Tom Robinson, an innocent black man unjustly accused of raping a white woman. He strives to instill justice, righteousness, and acceptance in his fellow citizens. In a discussion with his kids, Atticus says,“before I can live with other folks I’ve got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience” (Lee 105). He doesn’t care that the citizens of Maycomb, including his own family, look down on him now because he is defending a Negro.
