According to The Innocence Project, 2 to 5 percent of people serving time in prisons are innocent. This means that of the United States’ 2.2 million prisoners, 44,000-110,00 of them are serving time for a crime they did not commit. Adnan Syed is one of those innocent people. His freedom was taken away from him as a highschooler at the age of 17. Blamed for the murder of ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, Adnan was found guilty in his second trial because of casual friend and witness Jay Wilds. Jay’s timeline, accepted mainly because of unreliable cell tower information, is not realistic or supported by any physical evidence against Adnan Syed which proves Adnan is innocent of Hae Min Lee’s murder. Jay’s timeline does not match up with the time it would take to get to places. It is far fetched that Adnan killed Hae in the time Jay said because there is no room for errors (Koenig, “Route Talk”). It took Koenig twenty-two minutes and two seconds to re-enact the route from the school to calling Jay. If Koenig would have got distracted anywhere between the school hallway and the payphone, Jay’s timeline would not fit the possible times. There is also question of whether there was even a payphone at Best …show more content…
The State used inaccurate data and manipulated the story of the witness, Jay Wilds, to persuade the jury Adnan Syed was guilty. It is evident that police wanted Adnan Syed to be incarcerated from the start. Authorities went as far as influencing the witness to change his story to put Adnan Syed, a muslim teenager, behind bars for the rest of his life. Adnan is one of many innocent humans incarcerated across the United States because of his race. People were more concerned about finding closure for Hae Min Lee’s murder than finding the right killer, and because of this Adnan Syed will have to spend the rest of his life stripped of his rights and looked down upon for a crime he did not
Over the past few months there has been another visit into the 2000 murder trial of Adnan Syed, who was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, and is currently serving a life sentence at a Maryland state prison. The case was covered in a twelve part podcast by the name of “Serial”. The podcast which is hosted and produced by Sarah Koenig goes through the evidence behind the conviction of Syed to attempt to come to a verdict of her own. After listening to the Serial Podcast in its entirety and after carefully examining the evidence for the case against Adnan Syed it is in my professional opinion that Jay Wilds was in fact guilty for the murder of Hae Lee. Jay Wilds was the key witness in the case against Adnan and was involved
Unjust Seventeen years ago, high schooler Hae Min Lee was murdered and buried in a shallow grave. After a controversial investigation and trial, her ex boyfriend Adnan Syed was sentenced to life in prison. He was nineteen years old. But Adnan Syed did not kill Hae Lee; not only is there evidence to support his innocence, the evidence against Syed crumbles under pressure and the sole reason he was convicted is because the justice system failed him. To begin, Adnan Syed simply did not murder his friend Hae Lee.
For example, there is actually no evidence to say that there was ever a phone booth at that Best Buy. Also, when Sarah Koenig and Dana Chivvis tested the driving aspect of Jay’s story, they quickly found out they could not go to every place that was describe and still have met with other alibis (“Route Talk”). This means that Jay’s story must have been inaccurate if not made up. Furthermore, since Jay knows so much about the murder, while Adnan knows so little, it wouldn't be impossible to theorize that Jay actually killed Hae and then blamed Adnan as the killer and listing himself as an accessory. Jay didn't even go to jail, he merely received a few hours of community service
If a person murders someone and thinks they are guilty, why would there be so much evidence proving the opposite? Adnan Syed is guilty of Hae’s murder. On January 13, 1999 Hae Min Lee, a popular high school senior, disappeared and was found dead. Six weeks later, Adnan Syed, Hae’s ex-boyfriend, was found guilty of her murder. He claims to be innocent but there is evidence to prove that he was guilty.
Adnan was convicted and is now in prison to this day. But Adnan did not have a fair trial. There are too many details that aren’t filled in Jay’s story, as well as, Jay shouldn’t have been considered a reliable witness in the first
He’s still in till this day. There was not enough evidence to convict him. My first reason was they had one witness his name was Jay he said he “Helped bury the body.” Jay said Adnan is guilty, but his story of that day does not match up its very inconsistent with the times. Secondly, Adnan Syed say that is was just a normal day to him.
Is Adnan innocent or guilty? The case of Hae Min Lee disappearing struck everyone. It was an ordinary day until Hae’s cousin’s family noticed she didn't pick her little cousin up. Adnan Syed, an ex-boyfriend of Hae’s, and Jay Wilds, the witness that testified against Adnan in court, are two suspects that could have murdered Hae. Sarah Keonig, an investigator from the Serial Podcast, is curious about what really occurred and reopened the case practically seventeen years later.
Almost like, Jay himself strangled Hae Min Lee. I think Adnan Syed is innocent because of the following reasons; many people said he was never mad or upset about the breakup, doesn’t have any specific memory of the day Hae went missing and killed because it was a ordinary day for him nothing significant happened for him to remember it. Although he may have smoked weed that day it wouldn’t have affected his memory. Adnan was a good kid, who got along with everyone, played sports, won homecoming king and also had a spotless record.
Adnan Syed, Hae’s ex-boyfriend, was convicted of the murder and was sentenced to life in prison. Throughout the Serial Podcast, we are shown many different points of view of whether or not Adnan Syed was guilty or innocent. I believe that Adan Syed is guilty of murdering Hae Minn Lee because he doesn’t recall or remember much of what happened the day she went missing, and his location of where he was that day and what he was doing
Syed had no history of violence and still doesn’t, ‘“Prisons are among the most violent places in our society," they wrote, "yet Syed has not been cited for a single violent act in 17 years in that environment’” (Fenton). The Baltimore Sun article states that Syed requires minimum supervision and is constantly reverent to staff. Although, that is not so important to his case it does back it up and make the judge more likely to help everyone understand what type of person Syed is and was. Jay Wilds was a witness and was even involved in Hae Min Lee’s Murder; Wilds was also taken in for an interview to find out what happened that night (Chaudry).
What would you do if you were suddenly accused of murder? Not a happy thought right, but this is what a teenage boy by the name of Adnan Syed had to go through. This young man at the ripe age of seventeen got convicted of murder of his ex-girlfriend. I strongly believe that Adnan Syed is innocent and did not kill Hae Min Lee. There was a lot in this case that did not make sense or did not have enough evidence to have rightfully convicted this man.
These two reasons are all that a person should need to believe that Adnan didn't have enough motive, or time, to kill Hae. Jays testimony sets the timeline and proves there is enough evidence, which is not presented by Adnan’s lawyer, to say Adnan is innocent by a straying story. The time period where Hae could've been killed does not match Adnan’s timeline. Jay, who is a convicted felon, was the only witness and is trusted to give a good story. Cristina Gutierrez, who was Adnan’s lawyer, had medical issues that distracted her from using useful information in his case.
In the criminal justice system, homicide offenses are considered especially heinous. In January of 1999 in Baltimore, Maryland, an 18-year-old girl named Hae Min Lee was found dead in Leakin Park. She was allegedly murdered by the hands of her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed who was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. But the question still remains, is Syed innocent? Or is he guilty?
Should an innocent man be convicted of murder? Adnan was wrongfully convicted of this murder in 2000 and has spent 17 years in prison as an innocent man. On February 09, 1999, several weeks after Hae (Adnan’s ex-girlfriend) went missing (on January 13, 1999), she was found in Leakin park. She was a victim of murder by manual strangulation. On February 28, 1999, Adnan was arrested by the Baltimore City detectives; resulting in the case of Adnan Syed v.s.
Relationships, lies, murder, conviction. These are all aspects that come into play when talking about the January 13th, 1999 murder of high school student Hae Min Lee. Adnan Syed, Hae’s 17-year-old ex-boyfriend was convicted of her murder in 2000. The problem with this is that the only evidence the state had to convict Adnan was the stories told by others, specifically someone named Jay who was with Adnan for some of the day Hae went missing and had possession of Adnan’s car and cell phone. He claims Adnan made him come pick him up after the murder was committed and assist him in burying Hae’s body.
