He was a general in the Continental Army. Benedict Arnold was a Son of Liberty. He was born in Connecticut, January 14, 1741. He was born in the colonies. He died June 14, 1801. He died at the age of 60, in Britain. He disliked the amount of respect and lack of recognition the Americans showed. He was a merchant operating ships in the Atlantic Ocean before the war. His name became synonymous to the word traitor. He started fighting for the British due to the lack of recognition. He became the biggest traitor in the revolution. Despite Arnold’s successes, he was passed over a promotion by the Continental Congress, while other officers claimed credit for some of his accomplishments. Congress investigated his accounts and concluded he was indebted to congress. Arnold was frustrated and bitter at this. As well as the alliance with France and the failure of Congress to accept Britain’s proposal to grant full self-government in the colonies. He decided to change sides, and opened secret negotiations with the British. It was exposed when Americans captured British Major John Andre. His scheme was to surrender the fort to the British, but it was exposed. The name “Benedict Arnold” quickly became a byword in the U.S. for treason or betrayal. He betrayed his countrymen by leading the British against the men whom he once commanded. His earlier legacy is recalled in the ambiguous nature of some of the memorials that had been placed in his honor. In my opinion Benedict Arnold was a great general at first.
