Recent hopes in the Union have been dropped because Abraham Lincoln’s reelection is very unlikely. His loss would mean the end of the war, and the Confederacy will officially be recognized as an independent country. After the Union captured Atlanta and blocked Mobile Bay, the Confederacy’s hopes of being an independent country where dropped and the Union’s hopes raised once again.
