Mary Reibey today is known in our society as a successful and respected Australian business-woman, trader, and merchant. If we reflect on this, Mary wouldn’t have been this important woman that she is known to be today if it wasn’t for her crime she committed when she was just 13 years of age. Mary Reibey was migrated to Sydney, Australia and arrived in October 1792 due to her being caught in the act of horse-stealing. If we got the chance today to go to a new land and start anew it would be such a great experience of redemption. Thomas’ hard-work in making his prosperous trading and merchant business played a big role and impacted the beginning of Mary’s accomplishments. When Thomas Reibey passed away on the 15th of April, 1811 as a result of being ill, Mary was given the full authority of looking after the children and also the full control on her husband’s business concerns. Her career path expanded to real-estate, she became a key property investor and purchased buildings in the Sydney city district in streets that are known today as George Street, Macquarie Place and Macquarie Street. Mary’s great achievements during her business life include when she was one of the people that founded the bank of NSW, which today is called Westpac and another accomplishment was in 1825 when she was announced as one of the governors of the Sydney Grammar school which is now known as the Sydney boy’s grammar school. After 10 long years Torres Strait Islander Eddie ‘Koiki’ Mabo has lead indigenous Australians to a victory over the Queensland government. This win this case is a historical moment, as of yesterday, the indigenous Australians have been recognised as the owners of Murray Island. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are known to have resided in Australia, 40,000 to 60,000 years before the British arrived in 1788. When the British took over they decided to take all the land for themselves even though the indigenous Australians were here first. This court case recognises indigenous Australians unique connection to the land and acknowledges that they have the rights to the land.

We are one, but we are many These lyrics from Bruce Woodley’s iconic song ‘I am Australian’ encapsulate the essence of the Australian identity: unity, equality and a fair go for all. However, underneath the surface of our seemingly egalitarian society, the statement ‘we are many’ is the only one that remains. We are a nation divided. Divided by the historic mistreatment of the first inhabitants of our land.
For Ben Hall a young man, the evolving and progressive society of Australia presented an opportunity for the adventurous to have ago and to build a solid foundation for the future without the social judgments that long been a handicap for those of limited means and wherein some sections of Australian society there still retained the structured aristocracy of the old country where title and inherited wealth determined a path of diversity for those that were termed privileged, this, of course, excluded Ben Hall. With this scholarship Young Mary left her hometown and moved to Concord, North Carolina to Attend Scotia Seminary. Young Mary attended this school for seven years. She had two roommates Janie Shankle, Then later Abbie Greeley. Mary was apart of the chorus and debate team. She was Known as the “Bell ringer of Scotia” because of her punctuality ringing the schools bell.
Mary was no ordinary child mind you. She got delivered into slavery at a very, very young age. She got sold to a caring and kind slave owner named Mrs. Eliza Van Lew. When Mary was still at a young age, Mrs. Van Lew found out that Mary had intelligence that was above-average. That isn't the amazing part about her though.
Her mother died shortly after her birth leaving her father to care for her and her half-sister, Fanny Imlay. The dynamic of her family soon changed when her father remarried. Mary was treated poorly by her new stepmother, and her quality of life was less than satisfactory. Her step-siblings were allowed to receive an education while Mary stayed at home. She found comfort in reading, and created stories in her father’s library.
The colonial period in Georgia relied on the extraneous efforts of colonization. Many of its grand stories rest upon the men of the era whom sacrifice and prevail through these experiences. Although these stories embark on reminisce of accomplishments that embellish within our history books, yet the question is left unanswered on the women. While researching information on colonial period within the plantation in Georgia, I found the topic of colonial women interesting. I wanted my topic to be on a particular individual that covers the whole dynamics of women in the colonial era as well as a story of such sacrifice.
