The goal of this experiment is to find out what is the identity of the unknown hydrate? To answer this question first, we should know what a hydrate, and how to identify a hydrate using the law of constant proportions. A hydrate is a pure substance because it contains water molecules embedded in its crystal structure that does not vary. By heating the unknown hydrate, we can calculate the mass of the hydrated, and the percentage of water in the hydrate.

These water samples were all taken from the shores of Barker Lake, meaning that they should be similar and they were. Our class data did not seem to be very precise. This is shown in the data in sites 1 and 2 when one group had 9 ppm and another group had 20 ppm. These samples both came from Salt Creek and should have been similar but were not. Another example of class data being inconsistent or imprecise was on site 4 when one group’s results showed 3 ppm and another group’s showing 6.

Conclusion: Based on the results of molarity from Trials 1, 2, and 3, it is concluded that our experimental for each trial is .410M NaOH, .410M NaOH, and .450M NaOH. The actual molarity of the NaOH concentration used was found to be 1.5M NaOH. The percent error of the results resulted in 72%. The large error may have occurred due to over titration of the NaOH, as the color of the solution in the flask was a darker pink in comparison for the needed faint pink. Discussion of Theory:

 Two of the same types of plants were used, in order for the results to be reliable.  One of the plants was labelled DISTILLED whereas the other was ACIDIC, so the results don’t get mixed.  The DISTILLED plant was used as a controlled variable, where normal spring water was used (pH 7.3)  The ACIDIC plant was the one the experiment had taken place on, this was where lemon water was used (pH 2.0)  Throughout the experiment pictures were taken, so one will be able to notice the colour change on the acidic plants, as it had started to slowly die. With both plants you are able to notice that they had both started to grow flowers, but more the spring watered plant than that on the lemon juice watered one.  The results of the plant growth was recorded to we would be able to notice the amount it had grown, this would be the water compared to lemon juice.

Abstract The unknown concentration of benzoic acid used when titrated with standardized 0.1031M NaOH and the solubility was calculated at two different temperatures (20◦C and 30◦C). With the aid of the Van’t Hoff equation, the enthalpy of solution of benzoic acid at those temperatures was determined as 10.82 KJ. This compares well with the value of 10.27KJ found in the literature.
