Should Athletes Be Required to Take P.E. Classes?

Wake up. Go to school. Practice. Homework. Sleep. This is the routine of many student athletes at BHS. Sports are a big commitment in many people's lives and they are getting lots of physical activity from it. So why do we still make athletes take useless P.E. classes? Students who are athletes should not have to waste precious time in a physical education class.
Athletes already get much more physical activity from their sport than suggested. Accroinding to choosemyplate.gov children between the ages of 6-17 years old should be getting 60 minutes of physical activty everyday. The hours put into practice, games, and training far exceeds this number for high school athletes.
Outline a proposal that could be brought to the school board to support your case. Sports are vital for student-athletes for not only on the field, but off it as well. Its helps develop bonds and relationships with teammates that you can’t get anywhere else. This notion is supported by Dr. Daniel Gould, who believes that “Children who participate in sports have increased educational aspirations, closer ties to school and increased occupational aspirations in youth” (1). People against the funding of high school sports think that parents and society are placing more emphasis than ever before and, “[P]ressures athletic personnel to deviate on winning from the athlete- centered educational and personal development mission” (Gould 1). However, athletes strive to do better in class. Michael Lorenc, a high school basketball coach believes that “those who seem to have an overwhelming schedule where they’re playing maybe multiple sports, and high academic schedules, they tend to do better than those who don’t do anything extracurricularly” (Gray). Balancing sports and school makes athletes put more effort into keeping up grades while playing the sport they love.

At middle schools, high schools and colleges across the country, everyone is arguing over whether or not students with failing grades should be allowed to play sports. In my opinion, a good education is so very important for our country’s youth, especially the athletes. Not a lot of kids are good enough to play in the top college sports programs in the country. Why should Reynolds students be required to take a course in Physical Education (PE) to graduate? As we know that the physical education is the one of the courses which cannot lack in the education systems. In my opinion, an absolutely evidence is that physical education is given to school program when we were as children. I feel that if it's a normal routine for the young kids and It has no effect on them they should continue to do what they do. Young athletes work very hard because It's something they really want to do but their bodies are not physically there yet. The solution was for them to go to study hall and my other solution was to have light training and the advantages would increase their knowledge for the game and also keep their bodies healthy through the years. the disadvantages are it would cause wear and tear on their young bodies and the development of the player would take longer. All in all the time an athlete trains during the week should be cut down because of how young we are and the coaches and trains should find more effective ways to train us young
A healthy experience that should be added to the physical education program is camping. Camping will allow many individuals to enjoy multiple benefits for their health. Such as the fresh air, socialization, improved moods, less stress, exercise, sunshine, restful nights, and new challenges. Not many students today are fortunate enough to experience new things like camping, because no two trips are alike. By missing out on all these health benefits, it can affect these students later in life.
The physical education curriculum of today’s society attempts to develop a balance between overtly aggressive programs and extreme coddling. While physical education and athleticism are a vital part of the curriculum at a public school, many communities are missing the mark when considering the method of instruction for such programs. Physical education programs should be reformed to include more reasonable levels of skill- based learning, inclusion, and healthy competition. It is important that physical education instructors focus on the essential elements of athletics through skill- based learning strategies. From these strategies, students can understand both physical and mental components that form a good athlete.
Physical education is a class that all schools offer that isn’t always mandatory for every grade level. P.E is such an important part of students education while in school because it teaches them to be active and engaged with their peers. P.E also promotes students to stay fit, shows students how to stay fit and healthy in their adult life, and boosts academic performance. That is why students should half to attend P.E every year of high school One reason that students should half to attend gym class every year of high school is because it keeps students healthy and fit.
To add on, I think that P.E. shouldn’t be as long of a period as the others. Although exercise time is crucial, the periods should not last about an hour. Especially on block days, when the periods are longer, I feel we should shorten the PE period and just make the other periods longer. Excessive PE time just makes us all very tired, not energetic. Teachers might think that all the running around we do will make us wake up and be more alert, but to be honest, it just makes me more tired than I was, and sweaty.
