Do you think teenagers should read a story that has killing or a lot of inappropriate content and violence? Others think it's good to have them read it but I think teens shouldn't be reading this because “The Call of The Wild” and “After an outpouring of literary outrage, N.C. Country Reconsiders Book Ban” prove to me that these books are bad. In the text they prove that teens shouldn’t read it because it has killing, shooting, and they do bad things to other people. Teens shouldn’t learn to kill. Teens also shouldn’t learn to shoot others and teenagers shouldn’t learn to do bad things to others and treat them badly. First, teenagers shouldn’t learn about killing. “The Call of The Wild” isn’t a good book for teens. In the text it said “gets off the boat, a pack of huskies violently attacks and kills her.” This proves that teens shouldn’t read “The Call of The Wild” because it has killing. If people complain of a book they should ban it. In the text it said “Mother of an 11th grader complained that the novel was too much for teenagers.” If parents are complaining they know that it's not right for teenagers to read it and it need to get banned. Others might say her son can just forget about the book and not get it but then he's …show more content…
In “The Call of The Wild” it said “one of the dogs become ill and eventually the driver has to shoot him. This means that they shoot and kill dogs when they are sick but I think just because someone/animal are sick doesn’t mean we should kill them. They made a good choice to ban the book but now everyone knows. According to the text “The ban made national news, and the local newspaper was inundated with 168 reader comments.” This means that if they didn’t ban it teens would’ve been reading it. Other people might say if they didn’t ban the book there wouldn’t be a problem. But if they didn’t teens would’ve been reading it and have parents
Although this book talks a lot about sexual topics and has language that is not for the younger aged readers, it should not be banned from high school. Maybe in seventh or sixth grade but I think from eighth grade through high school this book should be allowed in libraries. The topics they talk about are a little on the edge but it’s things that students are going to learn about.
You could not survive in the middle of Alaska. What would you try to do to survive in the winter? People are banning the book,”Dogsong”, because of the violence towards animals. Hunting is a part of life that people need to do. While many people think the book, Dogsong, should be banned because of violence towards animals, the book should be read because hunting is used as a way of life, and the book teaches about cultures around the world.
Should “Call of the Wild” be Banned? Did you know that Jack London’s “Call of the Wild” won the newbery medal in 1931? Even though this is true some still say that wonderful books like this should be banned from schools so that today’s youth cannot read them. However I disagree and say that we should let today’s youth read these books and that they should in fact not be banned from schools across the country. I believe this for several reasons; kids need to learn to be more mature, this book teaches many valuable things, and finally “Call of the Wild” and other books that are getting banned from schools are timeless Classics that everyone should have the privilege to read and enjoy.
All books that young adults read have power. Their power results in their ability to sway and to change the reader in so many ways, not the least of these is morally. These books can create a moral sense in the young by demonstrating what is morally right and what is morally wrong. They can raise and resolve ethical issues. The reader may not agree with each resolution, but is certainly forced to think about issues he or she may never have thought about before (Smith 63).
Censorship in America is often debated. Erin Manning, texas-based writer explains that the American Library Association chooses to censor certain books because of “inappropriate content” and “second rate writing”(Manning 1). Parents attempt to protect their children from the outside world, by limiting their exposure to age appropriate language. When parents do this, their children’s knowledge of the outside world may be limited to what parents let their child view. Although some parents may feel that their child needs filtered information and entertainment, others believe that children and teens need to be shown uncensored content.
If more young adults believe in violence, our world would be damaged and despicable. In addition, characters have fake IDs and rob stores. Sodapop, a 16 year old Greaser, robs gas stations. For example, “I am a greaser,"
Some people believe that books should not be banned from schools because they need to learn what happened. The first reason is that the books can be about our history and they used some words that are know bad. In the book Animal Farm “The three hens who had been ringleaders in the attempted rebellion over the eggs now came forward and stated that snowball had appeared to them in their dreams and incited to disobey napoleon 's orders” (Orwell 84).The book Animal Farm by George Orwell is a good book, but on page 84 the leader of the farm murdered 3 hens because they were rebelling to save their kids. Some people think that Animal Farm should be banned for having murder in the book but thats what happened back then during the russian revolution.
Is it ever just to ban a book over the inclusion of controversial material? In Cold Blood written by Truman Capote has been an example of a book put under scrutiny for containing controversial content. Although the reasons for the opposition are clear to see in the novel, the complaints toward the book are not substantial enough to ban the book from schools. Capote includes some amounts gore and strong language in the novel, however nothing mature students are not able handle. The novel is based on a murder that occurred in 1959, and it has been speculated that Capote sympathizes with one of the two killers.
The Call of the Wild All over the world books are getting banned with the intention of protecting people, but most importantly protecting children from inappropriate things. People such as librarians, parents, teachers, and others give their opinions about the content in books, which leads to the banning of a book or titled as challenged. Jack London 's book The Call of the Wild got banned between the 1920 's and 1930 's in Yugoslavia and Italy. Besides being banned, it also was burned in Nazi Germany. They said that the socialism in the book angered and threatened them.
A parent or the student should be the one who decided whether or not the book is appropriate. Also, when a child is sheltered from the world, a book with just a bit of adult material could help them understand what really happens. It could prepare them so when they do become older and get a job, the world doesn’t put them into complete shock. Taken from Common Reasons for Banning Books, “…it is important that the reader makes his/her judgments on the book.” To elaborate on this, another person shouldn’t tell a student what and what not to read.
Fahrenheit 451 has an astonishingly accurate future depiction of a society in which everyone is too distracted by technology, so they ignore most of the world around them. The community members are not aware of nature or other human beings, and they never take time to actually think deeply about life and ideas in general. Many high school and middle school teach this book in curriculums nationwide, because the addiction to technology and hatred of books portrayed in the book is beginning to be prevalent in our society. This book also glorifies individuality by admiring a girl who is different from everyone else. In the past, many parents have decided to challenge this book due to the violence, the religious discrimination, the foul language, and the references to drinking and smoking.
First, this text states, “Children should not be exposed to sex, violence, drug use, or other inappropriate topics” (Procon.org). To explain, parents are banning books from schools because they do not want their children to be exposed to these inappropriate topics. Moreover, banning these inappropriate topic books would be a great deal for parents and their children. Furthermore, the same text states that “Keeping books with an inappropriate content out of libraries protects kids, but does not stop people from
In 1998, McClintock High School in Tempe, Arizona assigned students to read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. The book has long been regarded as a controversial novel, and each generation that comes upon it has found something that rubs against the current societal norms. The mother of a student at McClintock took serious offense to the use of the word, “nigger” throughout the book and protested that it be banned due to the racial discrimination (Source I). Huck Finn is just one of the many pieces of literature that have been labelled “challenging,” and many feel that they do not deserve a place in schools’ curriculum. However, the study of challenging literature introduces students to new ideas and lessons that they can apply
(“About banned books and censorship” 3). Twilight was banned because schools believe the content is too sexual and goes against religious beliefs (Dickson 1). Religious activists also didn’t like that the younger fan base wanted to become vampires themselves (“The Twilight saga” 4). Vampire books in general accumulated a host of complains in 2009 (Stephenie Meyer joins rans ranks of ‘most challenged’ authors 3). Schools wanted to make sure the students to make sure the students realize it’s fictitious and don’t’ have a wrong grasp on reality (Dickson 3).
Intro 1: What if your young child is looking through a book at your public library and comes across a topic that was way too mature for their mind set. Would you be okay with it? A big controversial issue that has been going on in the past year is if books should be banned. Now, no one is trying to banish libraries across the globe but people have requested to ban books that are inappropriate. This matter has grown to be worse because everyone has an opinion.
