William F. Packer (1858-1861)
William F. Packer served as the Governor of Pennsylvania from 1858 to 1861. He was born in Centre County, Pennsylvania, on April 2, 1807, and was raised on his family's farm. After completing his education, he studied law and was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1828. He then began practicing law in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, where he became known for his skill as a trial lawyer.
Packer's political career began in the Pennsylvania state legislature, where he served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1836 to 1840. He won the election and was inaugurated as governor on January 19, 1858. During his tenure as governor, Packer focused on promoting economic development and infrastructure improvements. In 1967 William got into politics and became Iowa’s senate for 18 years. Then in 1885, he was elected governor of Iowa. He continued on a second term in 1887. In 1904 William represented Iowa for the Louisiana Purchase exposition in St. Louis. At one point in his life Theodore Roosevelt and William were very close.
He had studied law before he move to Alabama but stopped to pursue his work on his plantation. He became a lawyer and was a huge advocate of State’s Rights. He was a supporter of Van Buren in the presidential election of 1840. In 1843 he ran for the state senate and won by a narrow margin. The year after that, he ran for Congress and was elected over Daniel Watrous.
