The Winnipeg Jets are a Canadian professional ice hockey team based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, competing in the National Hockey League (NHL). This paper will examine how the Jets’ framework, objectives, and structure characterize it as a commercial sport organization. In 2011, True North Sports & Entertainment Limited purchased the Atlanta Thrashers franchise and relocated it from Georgia to Winnipeg, rebranding it as the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets are in the Central Division of the Western Conference in the NHL. In, the team was valued at $650 million. Like most professional sports teams, the Jets are funded through investments (public-commercial relationships), media contracts, gate receipts, and licensing and merchandising. Comparatively, nonprofit and public organizations rely on funding from …show more content…
The Jets prioritize profit and revenue generation; a significant indicator that they are a commercial sport organization. Winnipeg has a clear vision and mission that guides their operations. Their vision is to be a leading organization in the NHL, American Hockey League and the North American entertainment industry, as well as an integral part of Winnipeg and Manitoba. The mission of the Jets is to provide a superior experience for their patrons, develop championship-calibre hockey teams, and make meaningful contributions to the community. However, their central goal is to be playoff contenders. To accomplish this, the Jets have implemented several key cornerstones. These include strong leadership, lineup depth, and positive team culture. On the other hand, nonprofit and public organizations’ objectives typically focus on bettering the community. The Jets — as part of the NHL — can be identified as a commercial sport organization through the following
Many public policy makers have been led to believe that professional sports are a public good, like youth sports activities, or community centers. Yet there is very little evidence to suggest that there are any positive effects produced by professional athletic teams that can’t be produced by other forms of entertainment at a much lower cost. Unlike public entities that are mandated to provide certain service(s) for the public, professional athletic teams provide entertainment with no obligation to fans or the cities in which they play. The numerous players strikes and lock outs are a testament to
The National Football League is an integral part of American culture, practically owning a day of the week. Though they do not release their annual financial data, they are valued upwards of $45 billion placing them tantamount with some of the world’s largest companies. However, the current corporate structure significantly limits its organizational effectiveness; recently, the organization’s culture and questionable practices have been largely scrutinized. Although the National Football League continues to generate high revenues due to favorable competitive forces, we recommend they provide a more sustainable product with a focus on public perception to address issues of misfit and centrality.
Zimbalist firmly believes that these issues can be resolved by eliminating the industry’s antitrust exemption. As a result of this exemption, there is a competitive imbalance on the field as teams, specifically their owners, have access to monopoly profits from media and television networks. This book overall successfully demonstrates the issue of competition off the field. This is a high-quality source due to its author’s credentials and the argument it presents. Zimbalist is one of the most respected sports economist and in his book he presents an argument that none of my other sources do.
Across the country, cities invested millions of dollars into sports delveoplment strategies to keep or lure pro teams to their city (Waldron). For example, the city of Cincinnati spent 424 million dollars on the Cincinnati Bengals but later “had to sell a public hospital to clo se budget holes” (Waldron). The financial numbers are stagering. Some of these cities previously expended money on the sports entertainment market but mysteriously ran out when it came time to balance the budget or to make vital improvements in the city. Cities will continue to spend large amounts of funds on NFL teams because the allure of the franchise and the notority they bring with them is to great to say no
Also, the owners and GMs split the revenue between themselves and the players. The revenue is put into the owners’ and GMs’ pay including the players. The NHL’s salary cap also exists to evenly spread the
The Last (Community) Team Standing If I told you that 360,760 people held 5 million shares of stock in a $1.95 billion franchise but never made a penny off their investment, you would likely not believe me. If I told you that this investment which paid nothing to investors was the backbone of one of the most storied teams in sports history, you would certainly believe I was not being honest. Yet, it is this truth that makes the story so sweet.
The NFL is both a public and private group of franchises. All teams, except the green bay packers, are privately owned. Franchises that are private are either owned by shareholders who own the largest portion of the team, or are owned by a single individual. The green bay packers have many owners that create a board of directors that manage the team when decisions are made. Green bay is a smaller market in the NFL, so basically you can say overall the NFL is privately owned.
Chicago White Sox The chicago white sox were one of the best baseball teams in the early 90’s. Heartbreak Hockey In October of 2000, the Columbus Blue Jackets became one of the thirty teams to grace the ice of the National Hockey League. But since the establishment of this rookie team, Blue Jackets fans would currently laugh at the thought of the team being able to grace the ice. Yeah, they’re that bad. Tormented by a series of unfortunate events, followed by the false hopes of resurrection, the hearts and minds of Blue Jackets fans are surely tender.

Classic Canadian rock & roll band The Stampeders has been racking up Canadian music and songwriting honors since the 1970s, the most recent being the upcoming SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) Lifetime Achievement Award. Road warriors Kim Berly, Rich Dodson and Ronnie King continue touring today, much as they did in the early years of rock. But now the aging Canadian rockers, still talented and entertaining as ever, play to multigenerational families; and bring along their own families to their concert dates. In 1992, The Stampeders' core reunited as a Canadian touring band, the triumvirate launching its rejuvenated career playing where else, but the The Calgary Stampeders used a solid all around game from
Rugby Canada, the nation's national governing body for the sport, must overcome significant obstacles in order to raise money for its many programmes. The effects of low funding have spread widely and permanently altered the competitive standing, growth, and development of Canadian rugby teams. This essay explores the complex consequences of financial issues, analyzing how they affect Rugby Canada's capacity to compete internationally, obstruct player development programmes, and slow down the sport's overall development within the nation's athletic environment. As we examine the complex relationship between money and rugby in Canada, it becomes evident what effects these financial difficulties have on the organization and its goals for success on a global scale.
George Richards was a wealthy man looking for a team of his own when he brought the Detroit Lions to Detroit in 1934. With three failed attempts by owners to bring a professional football team to Detroit, Richards knew starting a franchise in the middle of the Great Depression would be difficult. Despite a hot 10-0 start, it was a baseball town, home to the Detroit Tigers, with little support for football. Richards knew he needed something unique to football. He and his team participated in the league’s first Thanksgiving game.
It is like a Wall Street firm in sports. There are only 32 teams in the NFL sharing capital gains, players, and some of them like the Green Bay Packers are nonprofit organization that means they release annual reports to its shareholders. In order to understand the NFL in the financial side, I’ll perform an industry analysis using the 5 competitive forces that shape the image of the industry, and it helps determine the major weaknesses and strengths. 1. Competitive rivalry:
The Chicago White sox is a baseball franchise that has been running for over 100 years in the MLB (Major League Baseball). In fact the White Soxs have been in the majors for 117 years and surprisingly have not been one of the most successful franchises in the league, actually one of the worst. The White Sox originated as the Sioux City Cornhuskers of the Western League, a minor league under the parameters of the National Agreement with the National League. In 1894 the team was moved to St. Paul Minnesota where they became the St. Paul Saints. Around 1900 the team then moved to Chicago where the teams new names was the White Stockings.
