Witchcraft In The Crucible

The play The Crucible focuses on John Proctor, Abigail Williams, and Elizabeth Proctor and what they go through as a result of the Salem Witch Trials in the Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1692-93. Abigail Williams is found participating in dancing in the woods, and is then as a result suspected of witchcraft. The Reverend Parris found her and other young girls dancing in the woods, including his own daughter Betty. Tituba is brought in and confesses that they were dancing with the devil and accuses many girls with being involved in witchcraft. Later on, as John and Elizabeth Proctor argue over Abigail Williams, who John had an affair with at one point, Elizabeth is also suspected of witchcraft, leaving John Proctor with two women he’s been involved

We all have a flaws in life and we all secrets in life too. Sometime those flaws and secrets get out. In the book The Crucible was about the Salem witch trials and this took place in 1692. Over 200 people were killed do to witchcraft when they were wrongfully accused. In the book there were three that die John Proctor, Marry Warren , Goody Nurse all do to Abigail Goody Nurse believes that's a witch was the one to blame for the deaths of her seven infant children.

In the Crucible Abigail Williams is the one responsible for all the accusations of witchcraft that were going around in Salem. Abigail lies to conceal how she was the one that dragged Tituba into the woods. The only way she sees of being able to shift the focus from her and the girls is by accusing other people of witchcraft. Abigail Williams was the main accuser and the rest of girls that danced in the woods along side her, which was strictly forbidden in the Puritan religion, followed her lead. At the time she lived with her uncle Samuel Parris who was the reverend of the town’s church. Parris called a witchcraft expert, Hale, to come look over his daughter whom he believed was taken over by witchcraft because she would not wake up from a faked sleep.

The similar "McCarthy" hearings were trials in which Senator JoeMcarthy accused government employees of being comunists. Both the events in 1692 and 1950 share very similar details on how they took effect on people. There was really no proof for them to go off of, but they got the consequences anyway. Which created fear in people and the will to fight back.

“The Crucible” is a fiction story that took place in a small town called Salem in the state of Massachusetts in 1692 during the spring time. The plot of this story is about a group of girls who went into the forest led by a black slave named Tituba. They were all dancing in the forest until Reverend Parris caught them dancing in the forest and even saw one of the girl naked. Parris’s daughter Betty who was there in the forest falls into a coma-like state when Reverend Parris caught them. Reverend Parris only noticed his daughter was sick the next day and accused Abigail William, who is Reverend Parris’s niece, of witchery and caused his daughter to go into a coma-like state.

The crucible is a story about a period in the 1960’s when a town of people used the bible as their law there are many people accused of being witches and suffer for it because they believe the devil was controlling them i feel bad for elizabeth,john, and tituba because they were innocent but suffered because of the accusations made by people and the court. Many people who don 't confess to being a witch were hung in front of the whole town. Two of the main characters are Elizabeth Proctor and Mary Warren these women are important in this story because Elizabeth is one of the many accused of being a witch and Mary is friends with the girls who accused innocent women of witchcraft including Elizabeth, she also lives and works for the Proctors. Elizabeth is a good Christian woman, but has been somewhat distant to her husband, John Proctor because she thinks he cheated on her and Mary is a young seventeen-year-old girl that regrets what she has done with her friends, but is terrified of what they will do to her if she told the truth about what she has watch what the girls have participated in. Elizabeth is married with three young children, while pregnant with her child she has been suspicious of her husband still having an affair with their past housekeeper “you were alone with her?” (Miller51).

A 17-year-old girl named Abigail Williams had an affair with John Proctor, a wealthy, married man. Abigail is told by John to move on but instead, Abigail starts accusing the townspeople of witchcraft, including John Proctor’s wife Elizabeth. As this hysteria begins to rise, other people such as Thomas Putnam, a rich landowner, start to also allege Salem villagers. In this play, the author illustrates the central idea that people should not allow jealousy to control their actions.

In our world today we still have crucibles and even though they are different than back then, they all relate to each other because of what influence they have on people.

Witchcraft: Child’s Play or Reality?     In Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible’, witchcraft is the main conflict of the play.  Set in a  Puritan Massachusetts Colony in the year 1692, most anything that cannot be solved by the church or a doctor is unnatural.   The first thing that comes to mind is witchcraft, which the punishment for is hanging unless you confess.
