Making an announcement or trying to sell a product through something shown to the public is an advertisement. Advertising has been around for a very long time, but it is the way it has influenced society over time and changed by the products people purchase. Companies are always trying to make new products based on the needs and wants of the consumers so the advertisements are designed to target those needs and want. People are exposed to ads through radio, television, billboards, magazines, and internet. Over 5000 ads and brands is how much the average person is exposed to daily. People do not realize the true harm of advertising that it causes. Bargain deals that are irresistible, ideal bodies in women and men, and enticing junk food as delectable are constantly bombarded through the use of ads has led to overconsumption of products, insecurities and obesity. First of all, advertising has been designed to be understood by everyone. If advertisements were too difficult to be understood people would not be interested in trying to figure out what is being sold to the consumer. It would not make sense for companies to make it hard on the consumers but rather easier so they can sell more to the consumers. In, “With These Words I can Sell You Anything” by William Lutz he states, “advertisers have to be careful in what they say in their ads” (122). What Lutz is saying is that people can misunderstand the purpose of the product and their claims mostly because of law suits. If it’s a big company and the law suit appears in the media it can influence the consumer and their decision to stop or continue to buy that product. In today’s society, advertisements are second shadows. They follow you on the highway, plastered on exceptionally large billboards. They follow you on the Internet, popping up after every click of the mouse. They follow you at your own home, when you turn on the television. No matter where you go, companies are thrusting their products upon you; there is simply no escape.
It is obvious that media plays a significant role in our society. It affects every aspect of our lives - political, social, and cultural. In the various works including articles, lectures and films, Jean Kilbourne presents an insightful and critical analysis of advertising and its profound negative effect on all of us. She states that, “Advertisement creates a worldview that is based upon cynicism, dissatisfaction and craving” (p. 75). She discusses the issue in a very objective and impartial manner, “The advertisers aren’t evil.
“Ads sell more than just a product. Advertisement has taken over the daily lives of humans trying to sell products and trying to sell body images. In the United States180 billion dollars are spent on advertising, causing the average person sees over 3,000 ads every day (Killing Us Softly 3). Many factors and persuading go into selling an advertisement that connects to personal levels.
Advertisements have become a core system in American culture. It works like a political system but instead of being controlled by the government, the customers are being controlling by big companies. The main purpose of advertising is to connect to the general public and to inform them about new products or services that the organization is offering. The more money a company is willing to throw into an advertisement, the more powerful that company becomes. Through advertisements, a company can control the society psychologically and emotionally.

Parents, educators, and concerned citizens alike would be appalled at the answer of 1,480 minutes (BLS American Time Use Survey, A.C. Nielsen Co.). They would also be revolted by the statistic that 54% of four to six year olds would rather spend time watching television instead of spending time with their fathers (BLS American Time Use Survey, A.C. Nielsen Co.). In 1984, Neil Postman saw how devastating television watching was becoming to the culture of America, and gave a speech to the literary community at the 1984 Frankfort Germany Book Fair entitled “Amusing Ourselves to Death” which deals directly with this monolithic issue. Although the speech and subsequent article, published in Et Cetra, were directed at the publishers, writers, illustrators, etc., all those who read this article can also benefit from Postman’s overarching desire to decrease the hours of mind-numbing television watching.
Like the people of the 1920s, we as consumers today often revolve our lives around materialistic things as well. Take Thanksgiving for example. While the holiday of Thanksgiving was started to be thankful for what we are fortunate enough to have, it has transformed dramatically. A few hours after Thanksgiving dinner, the retail industry kicks off Black Friday allowing the American consumer to spend more and obtain more material goods, forgetting what they were thinking hours ago. Likewise, many commercials nowadays portray wealth and a feeling of desire to the American consumer, with the words “sale”, “100% money back guarantee”, and the idea of buying more and more.

Robert MacNeil wrote the article “The Trouble with Television”, because he is telling people that television is a bad thing. He says that it is addicting, it makes you lose your concentration, and it is a waste of time. In the article, it states by the age of 20 you will have exposed yourself to 20,000 hours of t.v. You can add 10,000 hours each decade. Robert states that instead of watching t.v. , you could be using that time to be doing something better with your life.
