Women's Role In The Early 1800s

Over the year’s women have made it a long way, we used to be thought of as an item that men can boss around. In the 1860’s, here in the United States, people were expected to do certain tasks based on their gender, but now a days people are free to pursue whatever dream they have, no matter what gender. There are many important women who have impacted women’s rights and got us to where we are today. Starting in the 1860’s, women in the U.S have made many strong steps forward for themselves and have had a great impact on our lives today, and what we call “normal”.

Women in the 1600s to the 1800s were very harshly treated. They were seen as objects rather than people. They were stay-at-home women because people didn’t trust them to hold jobs. They were seen as little or weak. Women living in this time period had to have their fathers choose their husbands.

The Unnamed Woman Up until the 1900’s woman had few rights, thus they relied heavily on men. Women could not vote, they could not own their own property, and very few worked. Women’s jobs were solely to care for children and take care of the home. Women during this time, typically accepted their roles in society and the economy ( “Progressive Era to New Era, 1900-1909”).

In the nineteenth century the roles of women were very different than they are today. Women had few rights and their only purpose was to maintain the household while men worked all day. Men of this generation made family decisions and their wife’s personal decisions. We have seen textual evidence of the life of women in the nineteenth century, thanks to Charlotte Gilman and Susan Glaspell. Only a century later have women received more equality and less responsibility.

Since the beginning of time women have had different roles than men. Women have been the ones to take care of the family in the home and men have been the ones to take care of the financial needs. In the 20’s women began to realize that they were worth more than a housewife and began to change their roles. Women had to fight for their rights to change roles, leading up to events that show their determination for suffrage, and their right to work and be whomever they wanted to be. Women were not given their roles and a question asked is, “Why did they have to fight for them?”

Roles of men and women in my cultural group were very much set back in the earlier 1900’s. Men were the head of the household, they went to work, made the money, and supported the house. The women took care of all the household duties including, cleaning, cooking, and taking care of the children. Women did not go out and work if they were married. Before they married they could work to help provide income for the household, but once they found a husband they could not longer have a job.

Before the Women 's Rights reforms, American women were discriminated in society, home life, education, and the workforce. As a result of the Women 's Rights Movement, women gained the right to vote, access to higher education and opportunities to enter the workforce, overall changing the femmine life for the better. Women in the 1800s were stripped of their voice, not only were they unable to vote, they were often kept from speaking openly in public. Their lack of rights left them dependent on men (Bonnie and Ruthsdotter).

When we go back to 19th century that was the time when it was witnessed that the male suffrage was prevailing in a number of countries and women suffrage was not there and somehow it ignited a spark among women to fight for themselves and for their rights so that they could be treated as humans and not as animals. In the year 1893, women were able to achieve equal voting rights at national level in New Zealand. The same pattern was followed in Australia in 1902. However, in America, England and Canada women could achieve same voting rights only after the First World War ended. Then came into being the famous movement called The Suffrage Movement during which the women fought for their equal voting rights which all men were enjoying at that time because they were of the view that they were a part of the society too and they deserve all the rights to elect their representatives.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century, women were not treated equivalent to men. There was an evident divide between the gender roles of that time. Women’s health in a psychological, social and physical way was not essentially important. Men felt as if women were just emotional and that their issues were of no importance. Women had very little authority over their lives and it was as if their husband owned them.

Women in the 19th century were losing all of their rights and the ones that they did get were not enforced. They grow discontent because they didn’t receive as much pay, if any, husbands were always drunk, and sometimes the husband beat the wife. The factors that caused changes to the form for women were the creation of women’s Labor unions, prohibition, and serious of other reforms that held successes in feminism. By 1914 some countries had granted women the right to vote and most women had a voice in politics. By the Beginning of WWI women in Europe proved they could do more than the traditions said they could.
