The underlying causes of the World War I were militarism, nationalism, and imperialism. Militarism, the glorification of the military, was one of the major causes of World war I. People thought that the military was important to civilians and should be respected and glorified. It was an arms race. The more one nation built its militaries, the more the other nations felt that they had to do the same.
