World War II DBQ World War II was one of the most devastating and disastrous time periods in the world. World War II spanned from the years 1939-1945 and approximately 60,000,000 people were killed. (OI) During the war, the Japanese, allied with the Axis Powers, attacked an American harbor in Hawaii. This resulted in the death of hundreds of Americans and the attack wasn’t even provoked. The Americans were hardly involved in the war until the Japanese attacked. This was one of the many reasons that America dropped the atomic bomb on Japan. The first reason, in greater perspective, was the attack of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on December 7, 1941 (Doc. A). In the early morning Japanese planes had flown out of the clouds and began sinking ships, either by raining fire on the soldiers, or flying their planes straight into the ships. By the end of the attack, 2,400 Americans were dead. The attack was unexpected and unnecessary. The sunken ships are still left at the bottom of the harbor, as a memorial to the soldiers who lost their lives to the tragic events of Pearl Harbor. President Harry S. Truman announced that “The Japanese began the war from the air at …show more content…
Wars are usually fought to protect countries but we forget sometimes that many people who go to war don’t return home. One of the many reasons people are killed in the war is due to prisoner camps. In Japan, 650 American soldiers were killed by the Japanese in what was known as the “Bataan Death March”. (OI) Another reason people were killed by the Japanese was because of the Jap’s desperation to win the war. So much that they were killing themselves by crashing their own planes into U.S. ships, killing hundreds of U.S. soldiers with just one plane. These suicide attacks were known as Kamikaze and they started happening towards the end of the war. Dropping the bomb on Hiroshima put an end to the endless slaughter of
The era following the Second World War was marked by a dramatic change in the world order as countries across Africa, Asia, and Central America underwent independence movements that completely upended their political systems. The war had left the world in shambles and the widespread beliefs in Social Darwinism and the concept of a ‘superior race’ that were originally used to justify European rule in foreign areas were challenged. The political climate also changed over the span of World War 2, especially in the weakening of the imperial power’s rule as well as the newfound sense of nationalism that had been sparked in dozens of countries. People wanted change to happen in their country and supported leaders and organizations that pursued independence
Although the wars were very similar the wars did have a difference, world war one was more wester v.s. world war 2 which was more global. In world war 1 the war was fought in europe and most of the countries that were involved in world war 1 were in europe. Most other countries just helped out. In a picture of the rhineland it shows that the war was fought with france, germany, United Kingdom, and Holland.(doc 5) While in world war 2 way more countries not located in europe joined the war. The document about the yalta conference it shows the countries that were involved with world war 2.
The Japanese were ruthless and brutal when it came to their militaristic decisions and motives. Dropping the atomic bomb was our final hope in stopping them from performing further harm. Either way, lives were going to be taken. The question we must ask ourselves is whether we wanted those lives to be those of Americans or the Japanese. President Truman had to make a vital decision, and using nuclear warfare was the only way to stop Japan without killing American soldiers.
The date was December 7, 1941, hundreds of Japanese planes attack America's naval bases at Pearl Harbor1, before eight am. During the attack, more than two-thousand American soldiers and sailors died, and one thousand were wounded. Also nearly twenty American naval vessels were destroyed. After the attack. Franklin D Roosevelt, asked congress to declare war on japan.
From the start of World War I in 1914 there were two different sides ,the Allied powers (which consisted of France Russia and Great Britain) ,and the Central Powers (Austria Hungary and Germany). The war began due to the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. This assassination was the straw that broke the camels back ,as tensions were already high due to militarism imperialism nationalism and the gaining of allies. At the beginning of World War I United States had a policy of neutrality ,President Woodrow Wilson said (in the message to the Senate) "every man who really loves America will speak and act in the true spirit of neutrality". The United States was afraid of getting involved in World
On November 11, 1918, the 11th day of the 11th month, Germany signed an armistice, ending what was called by the people the War to end all Wars. Little did they know, World War 2 would break out only years later. The rise of Adolf Hitler, a German Politician, led to the outbreak of World War 2. Hitler created the idea of Lebensraum, a German living space, which fired up the German people. With the support of his people, Hitler rearmed the German military, which went against the terms of the Treaty of Versailles.
World War 2 had begun its descent to the end, leaving the United States and Japan to battle for the final victory. In order to defeat Japan and be named the winner, the U.S. began constructing The Manhattan project; a top-secret government mission to create the atomic bomb. The bomb powerful enough to destroy an entire city was completed with the intention of ending the war as quickly and peacefully as possible. The bomb threat was set to plan B when the U.S. invaded Japan. While U.S. incendiary bombs had burned 67 Japanese cities, Japanese soldiers stayed strong and loyal to their country.
World War II was a global conflict that lasted from 1939 to 1945 and involved many major countries. The war began with the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany. It rapidly spread throughout Europe and progressed to outside countries. The thing that most angered Germany and could even be labeled as the origin of World War II was The Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I. The treaty imposed heavy reparations on Germany, limited its military capacity, and forced it to give up territory to neighboring countries.
Upwards of 70 million people died in WWII. Starting in 1939 the war ravaged the planet, millions upon millions of deaths, and no end in sight. It was clear that something needed to be done. Japan specifically showed no sign of surrendering, so to prevent the deaths of Americans, Truman made the executive decision to drop the atomic bombs. On August 6th and 9th respectively atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
There were no court hearings, no due process, and no writs of habeas corpus. One searches the wartime record in vain for public protests among non Japanese against the gravest violation of civil liberties since the end of slavery” (textbook 692). In the internment camps, the Japanese had a hard time living in the camps after losing their house and businesses. there was no healthy food that cooked well and in cold weather without warm clothes. cold weather led to the death of a huge number of the Japanese-American.
World War 1 was an atrocious war that caused millions of deaths and hundreds of billions of dollars in reparations. World War 1 lasted from 1914 to 1919 and rudimentarily, was the fight between the Allied powers and the Central powers. The Allied powers consisted of France, Great Britain, Russia, and Belgium while the Central powers consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. All countries had some participation and damage done throughout World War 1, and the countries who started the war may be obscure. However, there are some countries that can especially be picked out for their contribution and cause for the war.
Women and children were killed, and entire cities were erased from existence. This clear lack of respect and ethical reasoning highlights that there were more negatives than benefits of the bombs. Document 8 says, “The record of General Macarthur’s operations from 1 March 1944 through 1 May 1945 shows 13,742 US killed compared to 310,165 Japanese killed.” These numbers support the fact that the number of Japanese casualties far exceeded that of America. The decision to drop the atomic bomb added to this total, and made the comparison between American and Japanese deaths even more striking.
Intimidation to the brim On August 1945, America dropped an atomic bomb on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The explosion over Hiroshima wiped out 95 percent of the city and killed 80,000 people. Thousands more would die of radiation exposure. Two days later an atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing an estimated 50,000 people.
Hitler was the main aggressor during 1939 who everyone appeased to, who is infamously known for his rise to power, his persecution of Jews, and his attacks on the world to dominate, that killed so many. Neville Chamberlain, the British Prime Minister, believed in the policy of appeasement and appeased Hitler at the Munich Conference which eventually lead to the start of World War II. The Western Powers responded to aggression with appeasement, and in 1939 the world was plunged into World War II, proving to the world that collective security is a better response to aggression. Hitler’s aggression was the main reason why Allied powers felt the need to appease. In 1930, after the Reichstag fire, Adolf Hitler rose to power because he was appointed
The author emphasizes that “The Japanese military has done terrible things throughout Asia. They raped women, forced others to become sexual slaves, murdered civilians, and tortured and executed prisoners” (“Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb” 1). Japan has committed horrible atrocities throughout Asia. These horrible things acted as a motive for the United States to drop an atomic bomb on Japan. The author elaborates, “American prisoners were treated inhumanely, They were force-marched back up the peninsula toward trains and a POW camp beyond.
