WWII in the South Pacific against Japan was a long drawn out battle and Japan ruled the war for an extended period of time. WWII began in the United States with the blow at Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941 by the Japanese; they continued to have triumphed after triumph over the US Pacific fleet. This all changed with the victory over the Japanese at the Island of Midway, June 4 to 7, 1942. With the strategic importance of Midway’s location, cryptographers and all the military units, made this military action the first major turning point for the United States in the South Pacific theatre. Midway is an Island in the middle South Pacific Ocean that is low lying, sandy and is called an Atoll. It lies about half way between North America and Asia; …show more content…
Code breakers known as cryptologists worked on naval cryptanalysis which is deciphering codes which were used by the both sides. American Naval Cryptanalysis broke through some of the Japanese code about the time of the battle of Coral Seas a month prior to the Battle of Midway. This breakthrough was brought to the forefront when it was believed that Midway was referenced to as AF when AF was brought up by the Japanese in a coded transmission before the Battle of Midway. Captain Holmes, ordered a message to be sent in a transmission to Midway by way of the safe, cable transmission to Midway; instructing Midway to send an open transmission about the water desalinization plant being out of commission, which was a ruse to trick the Japanese. After this last transmission was sent the Japanese transmitted to their ships and commanders, that AF was having trouble with the water desalinization plant, verifying to the code breakers, that AF was Midway. These code breakers sent the information, from all the time consuming, hard work to the heads of the war department in Hawaii and it was then that battle for Midway had been forced on them and they had to defend it at all costs. As the Japanese were planning their attack on Midway, they were under the assumption that it would not be guarded with aircraft carriers and battleships. The American Pacific Fleet, utilizing the information gleaned from their cryptographers, planned a monumental defense. Admiral Nimitz and Commander Fletcher were in command of the defense of Midway carrying out their orders they placed carriers, destroyers, their many other viable ships and resources strategically around the island; waiting for the advancing Japanese Navy. The battle took four long days with the losses to the Americans in ships and personnel was minimal, but the Japanese were hit with a tremendous blow of four carriers, numerous other ships, over two
Also, this helped tasks be completed quicker so that they could get more done as well as saving lives by communicating important information faster. Intell said, “At the end of the war the code remained unbroken.” This shows the code was good enough not to be cracked. According to the Los Angeles Times, “Tokyo had succeeded in breaking the U.S. and British diplomatic codes.”
The battle of Midway (1942) was fought between Japan and America during WWII. The Americans, following many defeats delivered by the elite if not legendary Japanese fleet managed to break the Japanese code and score an upset victory at Midway. The battle of Midway destroyed the Japanese Combined fleet. Japan lost Four aircraft carries, that was around half of all carriers Japan had in operation at the time. Also the pilots and aircraft Japan lost was tremendous: 248 aircraft were destroyed.
First, there were multiple Code Talkers in a group who would deliver messages to other Code Talkers. These messages included, the regards for the movement of Japanese Troops, battle tactics and other details that would be critical to the outcome of the war. The article states, “The group participated in every assault the Marines conducted in the Pacific. They sent thousands of secret messages regarding the movements of Japanese troops, battlefield tactics, and other details that would prove critical to the war's ultimate outcome.” This showed that not only the people creating the codes were important but also the message delivers and receives were asked to fulfill a major and important task.
The Battle of Midway was a naval battle fought between the U.S and Japan. It was fought between the 4th and 7th of June, 1942, six months after Pearl Harbor. This battle ended all further threats from Japan to the Pacific. It was Japan’s first naval defeat since the 1863 Battle of Shimonoseki Straits. The Battle of Midway was significant because the United States was able to crack Japans code, ambush Japan, and win the first allied victory in the Pacific Wars.
During World War II (WWII) in the South Pacific, more than 110,000 Americans were killed and another 250,000 were injured. Americans soldiers were not used to the climate, geography, or the style of fighting. The Japanese began intercepting and easily decoding the American messages. It became even more difficult to fight the Japanese and the American casualties kept building up. Because of the courage and dedication to America exhibited by the Navajo code talkers, WWII ended faster and with less casualties than if the Marines had used only traditional codes and coders.
The plan was drawn up by the joint Army and Navy Board and later refined by the Navy’s General Board. With Japan being a remote island group and “dependent on imports” the main question became “how to get its (United States) navy over there” ? From there came two different philosophies, one being thrusters and the other being called cautionaries. Thrusters looking for a much quicker and forceful attack to push naval forces across the Pacific. On the other end of the spectrum cautionaries, who wanted to
The Japanese succeed in destroying almost 20 American naval vessels, which included eight giant battleships, and more than 300 airplanes. The USS Arizona was docked in this harbor, and it was badly struck and damaged by the Japanese enemy. Since this event happened on a Sunday,
The Pacific War could have ended if both sides were willing to cooperate with each other. I feel that if they made some sort of act they could have come to terms on what they both agree on and agree on some sort of neutrality. Putting an embargo on Japanese oil could have avoided as well. America with the hypothetical "act" they could have put a tax on oil. Even if this act only last a few years it could have changed the entire out come of the actual war and may of actually prevented the war itself.
The Americans were blindsided, the attack ended just as it had begun. The Japanese had achieved their goal. The Japanese captain, Captain Fuchida sent out a coded message to his comrades, which said that they had successfully caught the Americans by surprise. Adding to the notion that America had been caught by surprise, the Japanese declaration of war had not reached America in time, furthering the fact that America was caught off guard. America had not been warned prior to the attack.
This Battle was the culmination of 4,000 miles of ocean, and more than three years of war that separated Okinawa from Pearl Harbor. In 1942 and 1943 the Americans had contained the enemy and thrown him back; in 1944 their attack gathered momentum, and a series of fierce island campaigns carried them toward the Japanese inner stronghold in great strides. The ultimate goal of American operations in the Pacific was the industrial heart of Japan, along the southern shores of Honshu between the Tokyo plain and Shimonoseki. American strategy aimed to reach this
The Encyclopedia Britannica article “Pacific War” is more Objective because of the author's way of stating facts and sourcing. The Battle of Coral Sea took place in May 1942, five months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and The Battle of Midway took place in June 1942, six month after Pearl Harbor. Published Sept. 26 2017 by Britannica School, Encyclopædia Britannica, titled “Pacific War.” Islands in the Pacific were being taken by the Japanese Empire and this article tells each story of how each event unfolded (Battle of two of the islands/areas.) “Pacific War” is objective because of the credibility, reliability, of Encyclopedia Britannica, because it produces articles for educational purposes and being fair and not biased and showing no subjectivity.
The Japanese keep evolving their tactics to find ways to fight off or put up resistance to U.S. navy. The Japanese set
Political leadership, military strategy, organizational capacity, fighting skills and effectiveness, technology, mass production, resources, ideology, and morale, all were essential factors that influenced the war victory. The war at sea saw mainly the US and Japan competing in the Pacific and the US and Great Britain competing against Germany in the Atlantic. The offensiveness of the Japanese Empire could be contained and defeated by the US only after the fortunate victory of Midway in 1942 and the following buildup of an overwhelming superiority of the American forces. In the Atlantic, the German U-boats inflicted embarrassing losses to the British and American Navies. Only technological improvements and effective adaptation of the tactics (naval convoy tactics and dedicated anti-submarine airplane) allowed the Allies to recover the situation, regaining control of the sea.
The main deficiency with Japan’s war plan for Midway, as Symonds pointed out, came from the assumption that the Americans would react and behave in the way that the Japanese wanted, enough for them to strangle and beat down U.S. forces enough to drag them to the negotiation table as they had done with the Russians in the Russo – Japanese War. One mistake that Symonds pointed made on the part of the Japanese regarding their Midway plan was that attacking the island itself provided no advantage for them but everything for the Americans. Japan did not have the resources to both take over Midway and maintain the island, but it boosted all the benefits for the Americans because Midway provided land-based air cover, shorter logistic lines and was close enough to repair facilities that the U.S. forces did not have to stress. Essentially by picking this island, the Japanese had lost another step in the overall battle. Midway was closer to the U.S. bases which were crawling with American submarines and therefore easier to protect instead of the geographical location of Japan were trying to provide resources to Japanese on the would be occupied island would stretch out Japan’s already depleting sources as pointed out by Commander Miyo.
One of the most immense wars to effect modern society was World War II (1941-1945). This war marked the transition from 19th century warfare to new foreign policy. During the War there was great tension between powerful countries following in a call for mass production and military build-up. Countries such as Great Britain, United States of America, Russia, and Germany greatly progressed their countries economy in the manufacture of necessary goods for war, and more significantly, the U.S. acceptance rate of an international police force. There were many factors that affected the outcome of the war, however this paper will only focus on the mass manufacture of technology production during World War II (specifically the United States), the utilization
