Do you know what a “year round school” is? Did you know that this is a debate that has been going for years? Most public schools in the US have a 10-month long school period with a 2-month long summer break. An year round school is a 180 day school year with short breaks in between each term. Year round schooling has been going on in most arguments about whether it is going to improve student learning.

According to TeacherHUB.com, two million children are attending year-round schools. Would the United States fully adopting a year-round schedule benefit the school systems? Switching to a year-round school schedule is highly debated in the United States. Some states and counties have adopted the year-round school schedule in hopes to “avoid the dreaded ‘brain drain’ that students experience during summer vacation”, increasing test scores, and all-around student wellness (Chen 2). Most students would not like a year-round schedule because students already do not like a traditional ten month schedule.

Most people have been talking about whether or not students should be attending school year-round. There are both pros and cons to having a year-round calendar. The main reason people are against change is because more breaks will hurt the students learning. Having more frequent days away from educational learning causes them to forget more. On the opposing side they say having year-round calendars will increase the academics of students.

The traditional school calendar has been used for so long and students have always turned into very successful adults. Although the year round schedule may seem to have more advantages, there are many disadvantages hidden from readers. The traditional school calendar should be kept, as it has many benefits that the year round schedule would confine. A huge misconception is many think the children have more days of school on a year round schedule.

Teachers help make programs for the students more interesting and exciting, retired teachers often serve pool of instruction programs for students to boost up grades also some of the year- round school systems call upon professors or graduates students at local universities to teach intersession programs for students so their grades can improve (Ed. Most parents that switched their children to year-round schooling systems loved it because they saw their children grades improving & loved how the system give the students extra help, this advocates that traditional schooling is outdated and year round schooling prevents students from learning loss by cutting out summer breaks out in allowing more creatives courses for the students can learn better but also while having fun doing it so they can get a better understanding of the subject and faster.

Year round school benefit is for a child not to have a lapse in learning or remembering what they’ve learned. That’s when the parents or guardians need’s to step in to continue educational learning. Teachers alone can’t be responsible for the education others need to play their part. Just because summer vacation has started doesn’t mean learning should have stopped. Since year round schooling isn’t what’s normal adjusting could be difficult.

A year-round schedule provides students with more of an enriched education. With having shorter summer breaks it gives students less time to forget what they had previously learned. It helps increase grade average and test scores. According to J. Matthews in the “Washington Post” a school in Alaska converted to the different schedule and increased the reading average from the 28th percentile to the 71st percentile. With a year-round program it provides different schedules for everyone and with less people in each class provides less distractions and easier learning.

Sometimes people that are in a year-round school don’t have time to do a lot of things like sports or just time to chill family.

Have you ever just been so stressed out from school and wish you could just have a break, but winter break or spring break seem SO far away? Well, if you feel like this, year-round school might be a good option for you. Some people believe that year-round school should be required. However, others think that it is not beneficial. Year-round school should be required because YRE multi-track calendars can enroll more students, it increases retention, and stress is minimized.

The classic saying is, if it isn’t broken, do not fix it. Everyone will have a challenging time switching to year-round school when our traditional schedule is fine. “There is a reason most schools nationwide have operated on a traditional nine-month schedule: it works. Year-round schooling is not a beneficial change for well-developed nine-month schooling systems. It would take years to draft up a reasonable plan for change and successfully implement it.”

Finally, another drawback is that without summer break, there will be a financial toll. In a newspaper article titled “Year Round Schooling Explained”, it says, “Tourism and other industries that count on summer vacationers might suffer. High schoolers might be less able to get summer jobs.” This could end up causing a big financial problem for a lot of people. To conclude, the benefits and drawbacks of year-round schooling are about equal.
