As a person who is playing piano, I choose “Yiruma”, an Asian pianist and composer, for my composer report. I didn’t know about him until I listened to his piece of music, “Kiss The Rain”. After learning his biography, I was not only impressed by his musical style but also historical impacts in the classical music industry.
“Yiruma” is known as pianist and composer who lived South Korean. “Yiruma” is a stage name of Lee Ru-Ma, he got that name because its meaning, “ I shall achieve” in Korean. Yiruma was born on Feb 15, 1978, and began playing piano at the age of 5. His mother was the first one of people who recognized his talent at the young age, and she created good conditions to develop his talent. At 11 years old, he moved to England
In July 1999, due to the poverty they were going through, Yanira, Max, and Alirio, made the hard decision of leaving all they had and their families, to seek a better life, and a better future for their families. They first had to come up with the money, to pay the person to get through Guatemala and Mexico illegally (El Coyote). On Monday the 5th, they took off on their journey, leaving El Salvador, in just a couple of hours. They spent 3 days in a hotel in Guatemala city, waiting to cross over to Mexico. This is when the suffering begins, Yanira relates how they walk through the mountains, through the darkness of the night.

For this final project, I listened to Emily Tigges and Greg Dobihal’s presentations on their family’s history and musical roots. Greg’s family has Czechoslovakia (father’s side), German (mom’s side), and Dutch (mom’s side) roots. Located in eastern Europe, Czechoslovakia, now the Czech Republic and Slovakia, has very distinct genres of music. The most popular, the polka, is a form of Czech folk and dance music that utilizes a wide range of instruments, including accordions, trumpets, clarinets, tuba, and others. He also noted the important and popularity of Czechoslovakian classical music, citing Dvorak’s “New World Symphony” as an example.
