In today's society, sports has become a very popular leisure activity and a means of effective physical movement for many young children across the United States. The evidence, publications, and, data on youth sports, has shown and proved the positive effects of children's participation in sports: benefits that ranged from real world applications to personal characteristics. The structure of youth sports aid students in learning the importance of life skills such as teamwork; the development of` a strong sense of morality; and an understanding and appreciation of diversity. Parents are also given the blessing and comfort of their children being statistically least likely to engage in deviant behavior and becoming academically more proficient. Children and young people in particular need to do sport so that they develop good habits that they can continue into adulthood. This paper will focus on the importance of sports among America's low income families more specifically the importance for Black households and the gender and racial stereotypes that follow students from Black households. Research has shown that individuals who come from low income communities especially those from Black households are least likely to engage in non-school sponsored sports due to the financial responsibility that follows youth sports. According to " The Case Against High-School Sports" (2013), sports could create some study, health, and time management problems for schools and students. In this post, Amanda Ripley initially shows the benefits when involving in the high-school sports: exercise, sportsmanship lessons, some positive personalities, more fun and staying away from vices. She also writes some tales to inform readers that in the US, students are interested and enjoy in sports more than other peers in other countries. However, she claims that the high-school sports have negative effects on schools and students. Next, she gave some schools ' examples to show the problems when schools and students spent too much time and money in high-school sports.
This notion is supported by Dr. Daniel Gould, who believes that “Children who participate in sports have increased educational aspirations, closer ties to school and increased occupational aspirations in youth” (1). People against the funding of high school sports think that parents and society are placing more emphasis than ever before and, “[P]ressures athletic personnel to deviate on winning from the athlete- centered educational and personal development mission” (Gould 1). However, athletes strive to do better in class. Michael Lorenc, a high school basketball coach believes that “those who seem to have an overwhelming schedule where they’re playing maybe multiple sports, and high academic schedules, they tend to do better than those who don’t do anything extracurricularly” (Gray). Balancing sports and school makes athletes put more effort into keeping up grades while playing the sport they love.

Sports have lifetime benefits that help a lot of students for instance, to participate in sports a majority of schools require you to be eligible, students who play sports when in high school tend to get better paying jobs later in life, they have more confidence and leadership skills, in short, sports have far more positive outcomes than negative. When students play sports in school it motivates them to do better. With more school pride and confidence they strive to do well and reach academic goals. Athletics of all kinds have started to consume students and the educational system. Football, soccer, track, basketball, baseball, and many other sports are being introduced to students during high school, and this leads to the goals of academic system being placed on the back burner. Funding that could be used to improve learning situations is wasted, the safe environment promoted by many schools is put at risk, and a separation between the students and responsibility is created when sports becomes the priority over academics. Although sports can provide an outlet for many students, “Mixing sports and academics can give kids the wrong idea about what’s needed to succeed” (Ripley) With education being second place to sports, high schools lose the opportunity to take advantage of their funding and resources. Schools spends thousands of dollars and resources every year on jerseys, fields, equipment, games, practices, and coaches for each sport in high school.
Competitive sports provide a community which kids can work with and beat other teams with. “Playing a sport helps children develop social skills which would benefit them even when they grow older. Playing sports teaches them about teamwork and cooperating with others. They learn to interact with people from different ages” (Mahaseth). When these kids grow up, they can use these skills to be able to cooperate and talk with their colleagues.
In a study lead by Nelson Toben, Toben states that “Participation in youth sport has a modest, positive association with adult physical activity and exercise habits.” Although this is true, not all children are athletes and this may set them up for failure in that given sport.. If students who are not good at sports participate, they will more than likely not see any playing time. This is just the reality of it. It will just take away from time they could be using for studying.
In this day and age with professional athletes being at the top of the social spectrum, youth sports have gotten very popular. “More than 26 million children ages 6 to 17 played team sports in 2014(Rosenwald).” Youth sports are very popular because it brings the great feeling of being on a team. When you are on a team you feel like you can do anything together, and nothing is stopping you. There are also many flaws in youth sports.

Sports like basketball, baseball, football, wrestling, volleyball, tennis, swimming, and soccer are taking over households across the country, causing teens to be more active within the community helping each other and creating a sense of purpose. Youth sports offer an abundance of fun with minimal risk to their help and teaches them the importance of dedication and respect. Youth participate in all different activities because they enjoy what they’re doing. Just like being involved in other extracurriculars, kids like the competitiveness of the sports and enjoy playing them. Being in sports allows kids to make friends with common interest, and be involved.
