A Very Short Story Ernest Hemingway is considered one of the most significant fiction writers of the 20th century. He is famous for his specific style of writing, the so called iceberg theory, which is clearly seen in his short stories and novels. Undoubtedly the unique thing that makes his short stories so special is the fact that after you read them you get the main idea but there are many things that remain unspoken or have a deeper meaning. You have to reread the text and use your imagination to get the whole picture of the text. Hemingway accomplishes that outcome by making use of his iceberg theory - the ability to omit as much as possible from the context and interpretation of the story, leaving the reader to intuit its entire meaning. …show more content…
Although this story is fiction it is influenced to certain extent by the author’s personal life. The main character is not named throughout the whole story but it is assumable that he is Nick from the other stories in “In Our Time”. However, he is a soldier who gets injured during a certain war and takes shine to the nurse who is looking after him. The words “soldier”, “nurse” and “war” are actually never mentioned in the text. We can reach these conclusions by the facts that the main character is carried to the roof which means that he is wounded, and the mentioned searchlights imply that it is a period of war. The intimacy between the nurse and the soldier is implied in the end of the first paragraph – “Luz sat on the bed. She was cool and fresh in the hot night.” Their love is confirmed later in the text, when they are praying in the Duomo and reveal their desire to get married “so they could not lose it.” The fact that they are afraid that they could “lose it” brings in the feeling of anxiety to the reader. Later on this feeling builds up even more with the quarrel that they have on their way to Milan. They Although they kiss goodbye they still haven’t finished their argument and separate in bad terms. The climax of the story comes shortly afterwards. After having an affair with an Italian major, Luz ends the relationship saying that “it was only a boy and girl love”. In such a
Hemingway had been called by the editorial he was working with, the Star, to cover a peace conference in Switzerland between Greece and Turkey. He left a few days before Thanksgiving, so he later had the idea of spending Thanksgiving there with Hadley. So Hadley packed up and went over to Ernest´s cupboard and gathered all his manuscripts and packed them in a small suitcase, this would be her surprise for him. Straightaway, she headed to the station and left the small suitcase in her seat. When she came back, the suitcase was gone and she called the policemen.
Although some aspects the famous writers contributed benefited the narrator. The tone Tobias Wolff uses to describe the writing contest is to initially improve the students’ writing skills by learning from the visiting authors. Before the contest, the narrator’s stories appeared to be dishonest and as they were “props in an act” (Wolff 110). The “props” characterized his dishonest background in his stories, making himself seem more like the other boys in his school. However Hemingway stepped in to teach the narrator that it was acceptable to have flaws in himself and his stories, in addition that he should be honest in his writing, therefore also influencing the narrator positively.
I am the snake of reason”(148-149), illustrating the Iceberg principle through its underlying meaning that the war has caused him to lose his faith. Painting him as a cold blooded animal, Hemingway conveys this transition not only as an individual but a generation. The war has made them into animals whose thoughts revolve around survival and calculation. 2) Frederic describes that the peasants “ were beaten from the start with. They were beaten when they took them from their farms and put them in the army.
In “ Desiree’s Baby” and “ The Story of An Hour” written by Kate Chopin the audience analyzes the themes of love and marriage presented by the author in a unique style that is different from other authors during this time period. The similarities that the two short stories address include both of the women who happen to be young wives living under a male dominated culture as well as being under the control of their husbands whom they loved. However, the themes of the two stories are different. In “Desiree’s Baby” the theme portrays cruelty that is expressed through racial prejudice as well as being “blinded” by the ones you love, as compared to “ The Story of An Hour” which gives the reader a chance to explore the issue of forbidden joy in independence, and oppressiveness in marriage.
It is almost entirely told as a conversation and at that a conversation with no direct indication as to the done or context. This style of omission and reportive writing at first glance leaves the reader largely in dark and gives a sense of pointlessness to the story. Yet with close inspection and multiple readings the dialogue of the main figures of the story reveals a lot of details about their character and subject matter of their conversation by allowing the reader to interpret the meaning and tone of what the character are saying without having told them directly. With this method Hemingway not only reveals what his short story is about but also creates characters entirely through conversation managing to make one them a sympathetic character as seen with the
Hemingway sets the story environment at a train station, with two very different sides of the tracks. This setting is interpreted as a metaphor for the choice at hand, an interpretation of life or death. One side reflecting a dry harsh area, with no trees, and devoid of life, on the other side of the

In the short story, “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway, Hemingway from the start makes us draw out our own conclusions and does not give us a great deal of information. For example, we are only told about two characters, an American man and a girl who are waiting for their train to arrive. Other than this, we are not told what relationship the characters share together or where their final destination is. The protagonist who is referred to as “the girl” is in the middle of a tragic situation which can take a turn for the best or the worst and her partner, the “American man” is not helping but making the situation more heated.
They begin discussing the old man’s attempt at suicide. The story which seems to start off about the old man really becomes about the fear the old waiter has of becoming like the old man. The importance of the characters, setting, and symbolism of the story all help Hemingway to express the hopelessness and loneliness of the old man and the older waiter. The story’s characters consist of the young waiter who is confident but seems to be a bit naïve about what life is really about.
This is apparent within Hemingway’s writing as well. After setting up camp, Hemingway’s “short declarative sentences [echo] … Nick’s … continued need for simplicity and … drive home Nick’s self-created domestic ease” (Cirino 120). Simplicity is what keeps Nick from unraveling his road to recovery, and he is willing to drown all he does with it. He answers the river’s offer for renewal with this methodology. And when this simplicity is challenged, Nick is forced to face his fear of losing control.
“Hills Like White Elephants,” by Ernest Hemingway: The Morality Within The Operation Ernest Hemingway created the iceberg theory, by which he expects the reader to know a great deal of information from the little he expresses. This style is evident in his short story, “Hills Like White Elephants,” because the information the reader must obtain is hidden underneath the surface. This writing style confuses the reader for the most part, but when the short story is given a chance, the reader connects to Hemingway’s use of a variety of essential elements to engage and understand the story. This connection formed is strengthened by the important combination of allusion and symbolism expressed within this great short story. Most of the short story focuses on the dialogue between a young couple of an American man and the girl, Jig, who remains nameless for most of the short story.
The relationships between the characters and the characters themselves show what true love means and how important it is within a marriage. In conclusion the story "Désirée's Baby” by Kate Chopin does a superior job in using the setting, symbols, and characters in order to build the themes of marriage and
Love in this novel is a word greatly used throughout the plot and written works of this book. We see love used in this novel in many different contexts that allow the reader to grasp a better understanding of what is happening. However, in this novel the word love is thrown around quite a lot which makes the word meaningless. “There were only a few lines, setting forth that he would leave the city that afternoon, that he had packed his trunk in good shape, that he was well, and sent her his love and begged to be affectionately remembered to all.” (Chopin 45).
