Two explorers under direct instructions from the President traveled with their crew westward and explored the Louisiana territory in search of the Pacific water route. The two travelers involved in this exploration were none other than Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Their journey was vastly known as the Lewis and Clark's expedition. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned this expedition shortly after he bought the Louisiana territory from France, which was also known as the Louisiana Purchase. Lewis and Clark along with their crew namely Corps of Discovery set out on the journey of finding the route on 18th May, 1804.

On May 14, 1804, Captain Meriwether Lewis and Co-Captain William Clark as well as forty-three other members consisting of brave soldiers, slaves, and interpreters set out to discover what was in the newly bought land from the recent Louisiana Purchase. On May 14, 1804 William Clark and his four dozen men left their St. Louis camp to meet with Meriwether Lewis. The men met going upstream the Missouri river on May 20, 1804 starting the Lewis and Clark expedition. Clark would stay aboard the keelboat to chart the course and make maps when Lewis went to study the different rock formations, soil, animals, and plants on land. They tried to make camp along the river when they could and used night guards in case they encountered any Indians. Lewis and Clark, along with their men, traveled more than 600 miles up the Missouri by the end of July.
