People in Southern Sudan have dirty water, wild animals, the many wars and a lot more hardships they need to face. In the book “A long walk to water” by: Linda Sue Park, is a book that takes place in Southern Sudan and features all the hardships Salva and Nya had to face while living there such as wild animals, wars, fights through tribes, lack of water and food. Hardships Salva faced in Southern Sudan are lack of water/ food, the wild animals, and the fighting/ war. One of the hardships Salva had to face in Southern Sudan is lack of water and food. In chapters 3-4 Salva had gotten water from a woman older than Salva’s mother that he had met after he was left alone, the woman gave Salva a gourd of water and a bag of raw peanuts.

About 120 people a day die from starvation in Southern Sudan. In A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park Salva traveled across all over Southern Sudan. Also Salva had to walk that whole way with only one gourd on his back holding water that had to be saved and used with great care. Many hardships in Southern Sudan are war, lack of food/water, and shelter. Many hardships in Southern Sudan are war.

According to page 6, “Most of the people who lived in the north were Muslim, and the government wanted all of Sudan to become a Muslim country.” In the next paragraph it says “But the people in the south were of different religions and did not want people to be forced to follow Islam.”

Throughout adolescence we are taught that lying is not good, not even a little white lie. But what if this is not true? We see white lies in our everyday lives, but some people use it for the benefit of themselves, rather than others who lie to benefit the people they care about.

A toolbox filled with many different tools that have many different purposes can be used to put broken things back together, or take whole things apart. This all depends on the person with the tools and their intentions. One could also substitute the toolbox for the act of lying and all of the tools inside of the box for the different types of lies that there are. One might say that lying is immoral, and a terrible thing to do, but this just depends on how you lie and what your intentions are with the lies that you tell.

In the novel Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card, he explores a world in which lies and manipulation are a positive idea. The main character, Ender Wiggin, is a six-year-old boy who is recruited into a battle school known as the International Fleet. This battle school was presented to the children as a place where they can train to protect Earth from an alien life form known as buggers. The students soon learn the real reason they are there. Ender in particular begins to figure out that the adults are the enemies as they have continued to lie in order to achieve cooperation.

Stephanie Ercission in The Way We Lie (1993) asserts that we all lie, occasionally, to avoid problems and disagreements, to keep secrets, and trying to protect/help others. The thing is though that we often see ourselves as honest, and we don’t realize that we are hurting people and things in return. Ercission supports this assertion by inserting quotes and explaining all the different type of lies people make and the negative consequence of each. The different types of lies include: the white lie, facades, ignoring the plain facts, omission, stereotypes, groupthink, etc. There are many words trying to get to the point of lies being wrong such as; ignorance, destructive, ignoring, victim, or difference.

The White Hat Prevails All Within Stephanie Ericsson essay, “The Ways We Lie”, she did a profound job of explaining and deciphering the reasons as to why people lie. Ericsson explains how specific lies carry dire consequences and may be detrimental to the individual being lied to. Her target audience is everyone because, lying is an action that relates to us because it’s an internal instinct given certain situations. To add, she outlines her essay by including relatable situations that happen in real life as the foundation of her argument. By using both elements of ethos and pathos, Ericsson strategically uses rhetorical strategies in order to bring awareness to the effects of dishonesty.

Lying is against Deontologist school of thought because it is irrational when following the categorical imperative and it hijacks autonomous decision making. The maxim followed is: “Lying is always wrong”. We must consider what this means for an argument - when is it attractive to lie, but we still must refrain? It is attractive to lie when we feel like we are trying to help the situation by skirting around the truth.
