Literary Analysis
Everyday people come across a wide variety of symbolism. Symbolism can be defined as a literary device that uses symbols such as words, pictures, people, marks, locations, or abstract ideas to help represent something beyond the literal meaning. Symbolism can help to escalate writing to a sensory experience. Symbols can give words figurative meaning as well as literal meaning and allow the writers to say more with less. In the story, “A Rose For Emily” there are many different uses of symbolism. The use of symbolism help to develop and define the character of Emily through the eyes of the town. Lime is a white powder that is used to cover the smell of decomposing bodies. Due to the complaint of a horrid smell coming from the Grierson home, the townspeople take a trip to go sprinkle lime on the property. “They broke open the cellar door and sprinkled lime there, and in all the outbuildings. As they recrossed the lawn, a window that had been dark was lighted and Miss Emily sat in it, the light behind her, and her upright torso motionless as that of an idol. They crept quietly across the lawn and into the shadow of the locusts that lined the street” (Faulker 33). Eventually the smell of Homer’s decomposing body stops spreading into the town, but it is possible that the townspeople became used to the smell. It is later discovered at the end of the story that Emily had killed Homer and had been keeping his body in a rose room in her house. Symbolism helps portray a different, deeper meaning in a story. Every reader can interpret the symbols in their own way. While a symbol may not be clear til the very end, the symbols in this story help to capture the readers attention and grab their interest. The rose in the title helps to capture the readers story about a potential love story. The lime that is spread throughout her property leaves the readers wondering why that needed to be done. The description of the house helps the readers to understand Emily’s interstate and loneliness. Emily remains the same throughout her whole life and just develops more secrets to hide. The evolution through time can be traced through the different symbols throughout the story. As shown in this essay the symbolism in, “A Rose For Emily” reveals the tragedy that one can face through
Another example of usage of symbolism in this book would be Alcohol. Alcohol is used as a symbol to convey a deeper meaning. Alcohol in this novel symbolizes that many of the characters face problems and obstacles that are very difficult, but they don’t really face them head-on. They try to escape from their problems in many ways, and the main one is alcohol. The characters are having tough times in their lives, where they really don’t know what to do and how to handle their obstacles or setbacks to be happy.
In the story, There Will Come Soft Rains and in A Rose for Emily the author uses symbolism to show social downfall. The author’s purpose for writing There Will Come Soft Rains was to show how society is being destroyed and how we are the cause of that. In the story A Rose for Emily the author's purpose was to show how you have to love yourself before you can understand how to love others also how damaging it can be if you do not know how to love yourself because you will just be relying on that one person for what they made you believe happiness and love was. In the story, There Will Come Soft Rains symbolism is shown through the house to vividly convey the theme of social downfall.
Symbolism expresses many things in a story. One example is that the color blue is found throughout the story itself. It symbolizes tidiness which Granny appreciates a lot. The color is shown everywhere in the story like in a reference of her husband, when she dies and, in this quote “Their eyes followed the match and watched the flame rise and settle in a blue curve, then they moved away from her (Porter, Page 624).

Symbolism is one of the most important properties a story can have. It's often used to develop a character or a theme throughout the story that is being told. In William Faulkner’s, “A Rose for Emily,” the historical context is important to understand. In order to fully comprehend the short story there must be some sort of understanding about the time period in which the story took place. This short story took place in the 18th/19th century during and after the Civil War in the South. In “A Rose for Emily” the historical context shows the social, economic, and the cultural environment of the background. Miss Emily was born during the Civil War.

Throughout the reading of "A Rose for Emily "there is many expressions of symbolism. Understanding and able to point out the objects or people and the meaning behind them is very important. Knowing the explanation of each expression will help you understand the author and his or her message towards the audience. In the selection, "A Rose for Emily" some examples of symbolism is a character name Homer Barron, the house, and the rose that is stated in the title. These all have significant meanings behind them that are important to fully understand why Emily acted, felt and explain the reasoning behind each of her actions.
