In Tim O’Brien’s novel “In the Lake of the Woods” the protagonist John Wade a Vietnam war veteran struggles through life after retiring from the army. Through textual evidence within the novel one of John’s struggles is battling his Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which is attributed to traumatic events such as war that soldiers deal with when coming back from war into civilian life throughout his senior years. This disease is diagnosed after analyzing scholars work upon these mental illness that soldiers have. These sources are “Traumatic Encounters: Reading Tim O’Brien” as well as “PLAUSIBILITY OF DENIAL: Tim O'Brien, My Lai, and America” both scholarly sources discuss the traumatic experiences that John had which led to his PTSD.

From younger age, we have been taught to behave in a certain way in order to fit in. When we grow up, our lives get automatically filled with growing amounts of responsibilities and expectations that we need to fulfill. It is a tough world to live in; its pressure and rules can lead so many people to run away from it seeking a peace of their mind. But where should we run to? The wilderness, as being the only alternative to the human world, seems to be an ideal place to take a vacation from all of the distractions of modernity, where all human problems seem to fade and become meaningless.

My book is called A Child Called “It” by Dave Pelzer. It has 182 pages, all of which are full of sadness. The genre is an autobiography of Dave Pelzer’s abusive childhood. My book is a terrifying story of a mother who used to be loving, but became abusive because of alcohol. She took out her anger on Dave, her youngest son.

Other than this and the bravery and courage it took to get through the suitors. She didn’t do that much. She's a hero, but arguably and opinionatedly, she's a background character who had to do what she had to do. As a child, I always wanted to scare other people by creating my own haunting fantasies. Now that I’ve matured, I face nastier creations compared to my juvenile stories. Although frightening, I develop a craving when watching horror. I face some of my fears that develop while watching horror, I redevelop my average self, and experience a different kind of fun. All it is is the dark side of our Human Condition.

Have you ever wondered what the world would be like without technology? There would be much more communication and much more of people thinking for themselves. Ray Bradbury comments on the negative aspects of society through his depiction of technology misuse and a lack of thinking. First, Bradbury illustrates how technology can be harmful if misused or overused. For example, Montag lays on a bed separate from his wife.

One may say that McCandless’ violent childhood is what caused his downfall. McCandless may have even had the right idea, separating himself from his family, but due to his fragile state of mind he may have gone to too much of an extreme. He ended up taking the policies and principles of transcendentalism too far, which is really what resulted in his death. A concept that transcendentalism goes strongly against is materialism, a principle that may have saved his life. He was so anti materialistic in fact, that he refused to even have a phone or form of communication, this ultimately could have saved his life.

The destiny of an individual is events that happen during a life time ultimately leading to the future. During World War II young Elie Wiesel and his family become a victim of the Nazis’ mission to exterminate all Jews by forcing them into concentration camps. Elie’s life of studying Kabbalah and his family’s simple lifestyle running their business is quickly replaced by the need to survive. Being forced into the concentration camp was not his choice as he was a victim of fate. It was fate that lead to his family being forced into the concentration camp as it was not something they could choose.

“While the books went up in sparkling whirls and blew away on a wind turned dark with burning” (Bradbury, Ray 3). Montag is a fireman that does not put out fires, he starts them. Montag lives in a dystopian society where books are illegal to have and read. Books make people think and question things which can give them opposite sides to choose from which can make people become unhappy and worried.

How could one treat an innocent child so cruel? During the time of the genocide in which Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany and its collaborators killed about six million people from the Jewish population, children were the main target. By looking at the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel, one can see through the use of imagery, diction and conflict that innocent children were starved abused separated from their family,and killed during the Holocaust, which is important because young innocent children should never have to be deprived of their childhood. First, children of the Holocaust were abused or beaten for any wrong move that they made or even attempted to make.
