The puritans were a religious group that followed very strict religious practices and were very serious about witchery and hanged anyone who seemed to be with the devil. The crucible is about a young girl named abigail williams who caused the deaths of many puritans by lying and accusing many different people of witchcraft Abigail Williams is a victim of Puritan society, a victim of John Proctor, but was also a liar who manipulated others for her own benefit. Imagine being responsible for the imprisonment and execution of two hundred people. Not only that but what if you were a young teenager also? This is what exactly happened in “The Crucible.” Abigail Williams, a young teenager girl, who is responsible for the execution and imprisonment of innocent people.

During reign of Joseph Stalin, many citizens were cruelly executed without proof of their crimes. These cruel acts showed the negative probity of the Soviet Union. Similarly, act of cruelty throughout twentieth century American literature also illustrate acts of cruelty and how they render a character’s morals. Throughout American literature, characters have made cruel decisions that reflect upon their personality and rectitude.

Arthur Miller wrote the play “The Crucible”, during the “Red Scare” era. The “Red Scare” era, also known as the communist scare, was a time period where communists were often unjustly accused of plotting against the Government. Mass hysteria ensued involving these communists and many trials were had regarding these supposed “criminals”. Senator Joseph McCarthy, who accused anyone and everyone of being a communist or communist-sympathizer, single-handedly lead this hysteria. This label cause some to lose their job, have their homes vandalized, and even worse threats on their life.

There are three types of people in this world, those who fake it to make it, those who want it and go get it, and those who manipulate others to achieve it. Arthur Miller's classic, The Crucible, presents Abigail Williams as a despicable character in the play through her manipulative, dishonest, and self-centered behavior. Throughout the play she used manipulation to bring confusion and pain to the people in Salem. Manipulation was her biggest quality. Abigail uses manipulation as a weapon to obtain the love and affection of John Proctor.

Many of the people accused were respected citizens in the community while the accusers were a group of teenage girls led by Abigail Williams. Power is determined by many factors in the town of Salem. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, one’s gender factors into the amount of power that one has. For males, land and money are the two main ways to gain power. For a female, being married to a man of wealth increases power exponentially. A clean reputation leads to more power, because the person’s name is not being demolished in society.

In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, Miller demonstrated that it was Abigail William’s flaws: lust, vengeance, and jealously that led her to be responsible the most for the tragedy of the witch hunts in Salem. Abigail Williams started the entire suspicion of there being active member of witchcraft throughout Salem, Massachusetts. She did this for her own benefits and used trickery to get what she wanted. Abigail was corrupt and only cared for her own desires. There are many reasons that these flaws are crucial to the outcome of the play.

Then, Abigail, not thinking straight, wonders why John Proctor won’t leave his wife for her and she says, “Oh, I marvel how such a strong man may let a such a sickly wife be - she is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a -” (23-24).

Abigail defies all judgements against innocence as she is the driven evil force in The Crucible. Arthur Miller shows Abigail Williams to instinctively defend herself, as it is the humane reaction when accused of wrongdoing. It is common to tell a lie but, the intention of sabotage is a different story. Abigail had many tricks up her sleeve to manipulate the court. Her purpose to convince the town of her innocence was one of many.

One of the most powerful human emotions is desire. Everyone is constantly trying to fulfill their own desires. A desire or passion may be so strong it can conflict with morality. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams, is driven to go against her moral duty and pursue John Proctor. She will stop at nothing to see her plan through.
