The leader of an entire nation and its military forces needs to have a certain intuition and connection with its country. Without this, the leader would seem more like a ruler, which is why electing a president is a more appealing choice to most Americans. In the election of 1864, the fate of our whole country was indirectly affected by the outcome. 3 years into the Civil war, the union was electing, or reelecting, its new president. During the time of the Civil War around the time was Abraham Lincoln was the President of the United States, I believed that Abraham Lincoln was and was not a racist. As in Document A, I do not believe that Abraham Lincoln was being a racist because, in one of his many debates between him and Douglas, it says he became widely known for his views on slavery. Abraham Lincoln believes that African- Americans were born equal and that no human law can deprive them of these rights.

He had very little traditional education, but read a lot when not working on his father 's farm. After moving away from home, Lincoln co-owned a general store for a couple of years before selling his stake and enlisting as a militia captain defending Illinois in the Black Hawk War of 1832, when he was 19, he followed a produce-laden flatboat down the Mississippi River to New Orleans. Lincoln handle disagreement much differently than Davis by defusing the tension with humor and the personal image of himself he projected made it easy for common people to relate to him. Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln was probably best known for being the president of the Civil War but Lincoln played another big role as he also helped fuel the Civil War. He helped get this war started by speeking against slavery. Lincoln said slavery shouldn’t be abolished but excluded the territories. Because of what lincoln said this put southerners in a state of fear because if he were to win his election and slavery would be excluded from the territories that would mean that no new slave states could be added thus getting rid of slavery as a whole.

Abraham Lincoln and Civil War America is a biography that tells the life and success of Abraham Lincoln. At the beginning it talks about his life and how rough he grew up. As Lincoln grew up he wanted to learn to read and write because he was ashamed that his father couldn 't. Lincoln learning to read and write was a key factor to help him win the election and become as successful as he was. Even as a young child Lincoln claims to naturally be anti-salvory ( page 281). Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the slaves in the Confederate States after the Battle of Antietam, and ultimately led the North to victory in the Civil War. What most do not know, however, is that he got to that point after a long road of lying and deception. Abraham Lincoln constantly altered his views on slavery and other issues during the 1800s purely based on his audience.
