Considering my age, it wasn’t a topic that crossed my mind frequently. By the end of Cowley’s essay I didn’t have empathy for older people, but rather compassion and a sense of understanding. Cowley’s ability to familiarize me with an 80 year old’s perspective as a college student was enough to convince me that Cowley’s essay was effective in communicating his point. Would you go out of your way to insult your grandfather? Probably not, but chances are, you have. The elderly have been around the longest out of all of the populus of our planet, yet we often view them as weak, worn, and unfit for anything that requires mental or physical prowess, this notion is false, and unfounded. It’s important to recognize this as a fallacious bias and to remove it from our stock of beliefs in order to be a well informed and welcoming society. There is much evidence opposing this claim which must be taken into account, and once it is, it becomes clear that the idea that the elderly are weak and pathetic is nothing but a cruel stereotype placed on them by years of misunderstanding and harsh generalization.
This neglect can be measured by the elders voice not being heard, by the health professional making assumptions based on what they believe the elder wants and needs and also due to the fact that, as found within studies, many younger health professionals have agesist beliefs that prevent them from working with the aging population in the first place as they have reported “older adults to be too depressing”.(Chonody & Wang,2014) An elders voice not being heard speaks to the belief that older people have the characteristics of helplessness, vulnerability and frailty and are therefore “in need of protection” (Harbison et al.2012), this so called protection we give our elders does not help, but rather
