Washington and Du Bois had every intention to improve the social and political status of African Americans, but they sought different plans to achieve such goals due to their different upbringings, values, and opinions.

William Edward Burghardt “W. E. B.” Du Bois (1868-1963) was a Civil Rights activist, an African-American sociologist, Pan-Africanist, author, historian and editor. He was a co-founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Du Bois went to Harvard, where he was the first African American to earn a doctorate. Du Bois rose to national prominence as the leader of the Niagara Movement, a group of African-American activists who wanted equal rights for blacks and opposed Booker T. Washington’s Atlanta compromise. Du Bois insisted on full civil rights as well as an increase in political representation, brought about by the African-American intellectual elite.

W.E.B DuBois, Civil Rights activist, journalist, and educator, in his book “Black Reconstruction”, he researched the role African Americans played during America’s Reconstruction period. DuBois targets an audience of any open-minded reader that is willing to read about history from the lens of an African American. Two Great Men “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. ”- Thomas a. Edison Frederick Douglas and Booker T. Washington were both amazing civil rights activists. Frederick Douglas was a runaway slave who worked to end slavery.

Another issue that the NAACP and Dubois had was with lynching. Through “The Crisis”, Dubois was able to expose many of the horrors of lynching and have it out there for the general public. Through his many anti-lynching pieces, Dubois was able to garner a significant amount of support against lynching and this eventually led to an anti-lynching law. This was a huge win for all African Americans. In addition, Dubois also helped African Americans culturally through his pieces promoting black creativity.

W.E.B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington were very influential leaders for the equality of blacks, specifically ex-slaves while W.E.B. DuBois was a founder of the well known NAACP. Both of them agreed that the goal was to have black people be fully engaged in society. This meant they should be active in the economic as well as the political sections of society. Unfortunately, their differing backgrounds brought them to very different places on how they felt that ultimate goal would be achieved. Booker T. Washington was born as a slave.

He said that the most eminent Negro scholar in America, Dr. W.E.B. Dubois quoted, “It’s a silly waste of money, time, and temper to try and compel a powerful majority to do what they are determined not to do… It is impossible - impossible for a Negro to receive a proper education at a white college”. Henry Lowe (from Wiley College) responded using logos and ethos. He said that DuBois is the first Negro to receive a Ph.D. from a white college and is a product of an Ivy League school. DuBois’s first post-dissertation book, The Philadelphia Negro, released in 1899, determined that housing and employment discrimination were the principal barriers to racial equality and black prosperity in the urban North. W.E.B DuBois’ plan was smarter than Booker T. Washington’s because DuBois’ plan was to fight for the rights of African Americans, and give people a good and equal education. Booker T Washington’s plan was to ignore segregation and discrimination so he can just focus on the wealth and education of former slaves to win over the whites acceptance. One part of DuBois’ plan was the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, NAACP. This Association was one of the most influential civil rights organization. It “focused on legal strategies designed to confront the critical civil rights issues.”.

W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington were two great leaders of the black community in the late 19th and 20th century. They both had the same intent with their thought but they came from two different backgrounds so it was hard for them to have agreement. Booker T. Washington spent his early childhood in slavery. W. E. B. DuBois grew up both free and in the North. Ergo, he did not experience the harsh conditions of slavery or of southern prejudice he grew up with white Americans and even attended predominately white schools.

The Civil Rights Movement provided us with many leaders for our young generation to emulate. The NAACP, more distinctly, has granted Black Americans a voice. From its founding in the 20th century by such legends as W.E.B Du Bois and Ida B. Wells, the NAACP has inspired the disenfranchised to speak. They have provided educational opportunities, legal actions, and monetary support for the advancement of our people. Most importantly, the NAACP has taught Black Americans that it is their right to dream.

In the analysis of the abundance of wonderful leaders who made a difference in the African American community since emancipation, W.E.B Du Bois made a special impact to advance the world. From founding the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, to his influential book The Souls of Black Folk, he always found an accurate yet abstract way of verbalizing the strives of African Americans as well as making platforms for them to be known. Although he had less power than most of the bigger named African American leaders of his time, W.E.B Dubois’ overweighing strengths verses weaknesses, accurate and creative analogies, leadership style, and the successful foundations he stood for demonstrates his ability to be both realistic and accurate in his assessment since emancipation. The American Dream is Attainable Dreaming of success, a bright future, or even hope? An idea placed in the Declaration of Independence, The American Dream has been a beacon of hope to many; however, does The American Dream really exist? Some can and will argue that it’s dead, and that it isn’t achievable. I believe it’s alive, but it has to be realistic. By being realistic, anything could be possible, but only with the amount of effort put forth.
