Have you ever wondered what comes in play in a first-degree murder? How do you know if the person is getting a fair chance for justice? On January 13th, 1999 a girl named Hae Min Lee went missing. Adnan Syed, a Pakistani Muslim was accused of first-degree murder of killing his ex-girlfriend Hae. Adnan and Hae both went to Woodlawn High School in Baltimore, Maryland. Currently, Adnan Syed is serving life sentence of the murder of Hae. Some say that the evidence provided by this case does not give a solid conclusion that Adnan Syed killed Hae, while others say that the evidence gives substantial proof that Adnan is the killer. Racial profiling and a lack of attention to significant evidence caused Adnan Syed to receive an unfair trial of murdering …show more content…
As Shah writes, “Mr. Syed committed the murder because of “his honor was besmirched,” claiming it was the defendant’s “religious beliefs” that motivated him to kill” (Shah). The prosecutor is saying by default, Adnan’s religion motivated him to kill his ex-girlfriend Hae. The word choice “his honor was besmirched” is significant because it is implying that the jury used one of the Islamic teachings to sabotage the case that Adnan indeed killed Hae because of his practice of the Islamic faith. Additionally, Shah states, “Instead, it appears that the state relied on the insinuations that “Islamic culture” was at fault” (Shah). The state is explicitly saying that the cause of Hae Min Lee’s death was due to the religion that Adnab Syed follows. This justifies the fact that the jury had a bias towards Adnan Syed because he is Muslim in a place predominantly white and back community. While racial profiling was taking place in this case, there was important evidence that was disregarded that could have made a major impact on the result of Adnan’s Syed …show more content…
An evidence that makes Adnan guilty is when the State “contended that Hae was killed between 2:15 and 2:36 parking lot, about a mile from Woodlawn High School” (Chen 16). Basically, Adnan and Hae were together during that time frame where Adnan strangled her at the Best Buy parking lot. Adnan told Jay to come pick him up afterwards. This aligns perfectly with Jay’s story because he told the detectives that Adnan had killed Hae at the Best Buy parking lot. Thus, making Adnan the prime suspect since he was last seen with Hae. However, a witness named Summer explicitly stated that she was talking with Hae after school during the time frame that Hae was “supposedly” murdered. The authors state, “Summer, a young woman who goes to Woodlawn High School, states that if the state said that Hae was killed by 2:36 then that is impossible” (Rosario, Tepi, Marte, and Masieh 31). At that moment, Hae and Summer were having a conversation. Hae told Summer that she would meet her at the wrestling match. They were both managers of the wrestling team. This is significant because the conversation between Hae and Summer lasted for at least 10 minutes which cannot align with the possibility that Hae was murdered at 2:36 p.m. This is very peculiar since the jury never followed through Summer’s statement. Even though the jury believed that Jay’s story was the most accurate, they forgot to make sure that his story was
Jen saw Jay arrive in Adnan’s car, and after Jay had stepped in her car, she explained how Jay had looked nervous, or otherwise frighten. After a while of silence, Jay had told her what Adnan had done. The only thing different about both Jen’s and Jay’s story is the exact day Jen had taken Jay to the dumpster of Westview mall in order to dispose of the evidence he contained. Jen stated that it was the following day she took Jay. However, Jay claims that it was the exact night the murder had occurred.
There was not enough evidence to prove if Adnan was innocent or guilty. There were multiple people that said that Jay had Adnan’s phone but Adnan called Jay at least twice which means that Adnan would have had to use a payphone or borrow a phone. And supposedly Adnan was sitting in the best buy parking lot when he called Jay. Also in the time it took
The state uses Jay as their key witness in the case against Adnan, but Jay's story changed where Adnan showed him Haes body. Jay says in one of his testimonies that Adnan showed him Haes body in the Best Buy parking lot, then he changes it in his testimony to “I went to pick him up from off of Edmondson Avenue at a strip and he, uh, popped the trunk open and…”(Serial 05.17). Jay was a friend of Adnan’s: they smoked weed and hung out together. The day of the murder according to Jay was that he picked up Adnan after he killed Hae and left her in the trunk of her car. This is where the two different places that he mentioned where Adnan showed Jay Hae’s body is the Best Buy parking lot and a strip off of Edmondson Avenue are important because these places aren’t similar either, one is a tech store and the other is an outdoor drug market.
Was Adnan Syed, a teenage Muslim from Woodlawn High School, responsible for the death of Hae Min Lee? In the podcast series Serial, Sarah Koenig explains the events of 17-year-old Hae Min Lee’s death. She was contended dead at 2:36, only 21 minutes after the release bell of the school day. Through many difficult days of investigating, Koenig discovers ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed and acquaintance Jay Wilds together on the day of Lee’s disappearance, January 13th, 1999. Jay has told court officials that he believes Adnan is guilty of Hae’s murder, but Syed and other testimonies disagree.
The investigators were convinced it was Adnan Syed- the ex boyfriend, they saw through his charm and manipulation accusing him of killing Hae because they broke up which was in December a month before she went missing. The amount of evidence in the case was not strong. First, when they tested
.I think that kind of sums it up for Jay. Adnan Syed is innocent of the murder of Hae Min Lee because there is hardly any evidence leading to Adnan being guilty. The first reason I believe Adnan is innocent is witnesses said Adnan was at the library at the time Hae was murdered therefore it is impossible for Adnan
The second found inconsistency in this case was also in Jay’s story. The call log that came from Adnan’s phone on the day of the crime matches some of what Jay said in the statements and the phone towers match some of the places that he had mentioned as well. Jay took the cops on the routine of what had happened the day of Hae’s disappearance, to map out the whole timeline. In the podcast Sarah Koenig and her assistant took this same route to schedule out the whole case and find the holes. Jay had told the police that after him and Adnan left the Park and Ride, they went in search of weed.
No parents should ever have to bury their children. For the Lee family they not only lost a child but still live with the horror of not knowing who took their daughter’s life. On January 13, 1999, Baltimore, Maryland was racked with drama and tension when Woodlawn High School senior Hae Min Lee disappeared after school. Her mutilated body was discovered behind a log in Leakin Park on February 9, 1999 by a mysterious man know as Mr. S. Reports pin the cause of death on strangulation. After a long and drawn out trial, Hae Min Lee’s ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was convicted of the crime and sentenced to life in prison.
My verdict for Adnan’s Syed on the act on to see if he can testify about to see if he is innocent and I'll tell you why. My first piece of evidence is that Adnan did have an, ex-girlfriend but things got worse. When time goes on Adnan was charged with a human killing towards his high school ex-girlfriend and got sentenced to 17 years in an institution and this is why. Adnan strangled his ex-girlfriend to death because he was not showing joy in Hae Min Lee because she was was getting a new boyfriend. The detectives needed to find the murderer who killed Hae Min Lee, and if the investigators need strong informal evidence, then the investigators can put charges on Adnan.
But if look at Jay's testimony he doesn’t have an alibi for that time frame. Many argue that it couldn’t possibly have been Jay because he didn’t have any motive to kill Hae, but I can argue he did because after Adnan's and Hae’s breakup Adnan was depressed and probably talked a lot about his feelings to Jay. This could even explain the conversation Jay mentions in his testimony where Adnan, under the influence of marijuana and on emotions, says, “I’m going to kill her [Hae].” But Jay was also under the influence of marijuana and after hearing lots of complaining from Adnan about Hae and the breakup, Jay could have decided to go talk to Hae about it. But the conversation soon turned into a argument, then with some harsh decision making while under the influence, Jay ended up killing
These two reasons are all that a person should need to believe that Adnan didn't have enough motive, or time, to kill Hae. Jays testimony sets the timeline and proves there is enough evidence, which is not presented by Adnan’s lawyer, to say Adnan is innocent by a straying story. The time period where Hae could've been killed does not match Adnan’s timeline. Jay, who is a convicted felon, was the only witness and is trusted to give a good story. Cristina Gutierrez, who was Adnan’s lawyer, had medical issues that distracted her from using useful information in his case.
Serial, a weekly podcast, revisits the 1999 murder case of Hae Min Lee, a senior at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore, and her former boyfriend convicted of the crime, Adnan Syed. In the United States, the law says that someone is innocent until proven guilty and with certain evidence presented in the podcast, Adnan is far from guilty. Serial brings to light new evidence that could answer the question of Adnan Syed’s wrongful imprisonment. With the inconsistency of Jay Wilds incriminating testimony, the irrational judgments by the police based on behavior and the possibility of the involvement of corrupt detectives, newly gathered evidence could prove that Adnan Syed is innocent.
Should an innocent man be convicted of murder? Adnan was wrongfully convicted of this murder in 2000 and has spent 17 years in prison as an innocent man. On February 09, 1999, several weeks after Hae (Adnan’s ex-girlfriend) went missing (on January 13, 1999), she was found in Leakin park. She was a victim of murder by manual strangulation. On February 28, 1999, Adnan was arrested by the Baltimore City detectives; resulting in the case of Adnan Syed v.s.
Pride and Jealousy are very powerful things! Some people will go to the farthest limits to preserve their own ego and selfish desires. The Serial Podcast by Sarah Koenig is about the very complex murder of Hae Min Lee on January 13th, 1999. Many different people are brought into the Hae Lee case but the one that sticks out the most is Adnan Syed. On the day of January 13th, 1999 Hae Min Lee was strangled to death by Adnan Syed with the assistance of Jay Wilds.
Would you be okay with getting blamed on killing someone and going to jail? This story is interesting because Jay might be the killer of Hae. Adnan Syed is supposably the killer of Hae. Adnan Syed is innocent of the murder of Hae because he doesn’t remember what he did that day and he had no motive. Adnan didn’t have no reason to kill her.
