Black people have many disadvantages stemming from multiple sources such as, slavery, race-based exclusion, lack of education, social and economic resources, amongst other things. Socioeconomic status is linked to mental health. People who are impoverished, homeless, incarcerated or have substance abuse problems are at higher risk for poor mental health. Racism still continues to have a negative impact on black people, especially the mental health of blacks. Historically and contemporary occurrences of antagonistic treatment led to a distrust of authorities. Some of these authorities do not have black people’s best interest in mind. Black people are disproportionately more likely to experience circumstances that increase the chances of having mental illness or challenge. “We know that African Americans have a disproportionate number who are also in poverty and a higher jobless rate. Women are less likely to be coupled or in supportive relationships and so those factors into why African Americans may have higher numbers of psychological disorders,” said Dr. Janet Taylor, a psychiatrist who frequently appears on television shows. Many black people don’t educate themselves about mental illness. 63 percent of African Americans believe that depression is a personal weakness, this is significantly higher than the overall survey average of 54 percent, according to a MHA commissioned a national survey on clinical depression. 56 percent believed that depression was a normal part of aging. Black people have historically normalized their own suffering. During slavery, mental health resulted in a more vicious lifestyle which included frequent whippings, beatings and more abusive
In Pollack's book, she points out the racial disparity in being classified as an offender qualifying for mental health assistance. Pollack notes that white people are more likely classified as mentally ill, whereas institutions view potential mental health issues as behavioral problems in minorities. In the section on biological causes in van Wormer's book,
Maynard explains that black children who get into trouble with the educational system increase the likelihood of ending up in the criminal justice system. Maynard explains that these hostile school environments make many black children disengage from school. Maynard showed that the data collected from the Toronto school board revealed that overall black student graduation rates are the lowest (Maynard, 2017, p.222). Due to a lack of education it is far easier for black people to end up in prison in comparison to someone who is fully educated. In our society it is nearly impossible to get a well paid and steady job without a high school or post secondary degree.
Since, the majority of African-Americans live in areas of drug involvement, they are more likely to be racially profiled and investigated. This has created an uneven ethnic ratio in prisons and produced stereotypes that affect children that prevent them from becoming abiding citizens.
Treating patients with depression, schizophrenia, and other mental illnesses. Most aspects of mental illness are influenced by social factors (such as gender, social class, race and ethnicity, and household patterns) and social institutions (such as disability and social security systems, labor markets, and healthcare organizations).
Sometimes the blacks are ill-treated indescribably because of the racism.
The prison population is overwhelmingly male and disproportionately minority. The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that 25% of state prisoners are white, 38% are black and 21% are Hispanic, revealing a degree of disproportion when compared to the general population where 62% are white, 13% are black and 17% are Hispanic. Racial disparity with regards to imprisonment has been a feature of the prison system from decades yet this disparity has increased over time. African Americans today are incarcerated in state prisons at a rate that is 5.1 times the imprisonment of whites. African Americans comprise 31% of individuals arrested for drug violations.

Regardless of the side when examining mass incarceration, it conceded that black people are disproportionately imprisoned. The higher numbers incarceration of blacks due to violent crime can tip the scale when looking at crime overall. However, in 2015, when looking at both state and federal prisons, more than 51% of the population of criminals were incarcerated for something other than violent crime (Wagner and Rabuy, 2016). These other crimes included property crime and drug charges; both of which are committed at a much higher rate by whites than blacks. Bisto (2018) provided there are four to ten times more illicit drug users than any other demographic.
In conclusion the theme mental illness in MK Asante’s book BUCK brings forth an important message about the lack of psychological awareness in the black community. It shines a light on the issue that black people need to stop calling people “ Crazy” and telling people to “ Get it Together” because if they wanted to get it together, they
Even when you look at consumer markets scholars find that from using info from over 400 fast food restaurants that linked with the 1990 census data that blacks living in certain areas have a 5 percent increase in the price of meals. As you can see many factors and sectors tell you the common inequality between racial/ethnic groups is very complex and its really hard to see the influences of why these stats are alarming. It hard because these stats only look at groups not the individual
A pediatrician from the University of California at Riverside, Ashaunta Anderson, found that people who have experienced racism are more likely to experience depression and anxiety. The last thing anyone should want to have is bad mental health. She also found that racism can increase stress hormones that weaken the body’s immune. Racism can easily ruin people’s lives mentally and physically. And to my surprise Illinois is the 16th more racist state in America with over 30 active discriminating groups.
The nature of American society is racist as many social problems in the United States have racial aspects to them. Poverty, educational attainment, and basic social conduct are all affected by racial discrimination. While certain institutions discriminate against people of color unfairly, it is more important to understand the social awareness people of color must develop in order to live in a society where their skin color alone puts them at a disadvantage. Socioeconomic class, educational advancement, and social norms are influenced by racial factors. People of color are more likely to have a lower socioeconomic status, and mobility is near impossible because of the disadvantages people of color have compared to those who are not of color.
