After the civil war, the struggle between African American freedom and white dominance were at its strongest. These struggles are what would lay the foundation for the lives of the African Americans for many years after. The plan for reconstruction started after the civil war ended and was the major attempt at trying to create an interracial democracy and fix society, as well as physical rebuilding the country. The ways of the society also were changing very much. The end of slavery led to a hope of economic freedom for the African Americans; allowing them to break free from the grips of white dominance. The chance of equality is what led to the struggle for the whites to try to maintain their supremacy and keep the African Americans at a “lower …show more content…
Without the North as the support system for the freedmen anymore, the South was able to oppress the freedmen to a point to where it seemed as if slavery was making a comeback. The Whites were able to maintain White supremacy due to their economic status, which was always held higher than that of any African American freedmen. This economic status allowed the Whites to control the way the freedmen acted within the society as well as controlling politics during elections. They were able to achieve what they wanted due to the fact that they were able to control the way the African American freedmen voted. For example, if an African American freedman worked for a White man (which most of them actually did have to), in order to make sure they were able to keep their job, they would vote for anything their White bosses supported for the ability to make sure that they can secure their job and not be …show more content…
The “Jim Crow” laws were implemented in the South during the beginning of the 1880’s and were heavily enforced. These laws were used in order to segregate the common areas between the whites and the African Americans. Many areas such as the restrooms, schools, and hospitals were each provided separately depending on the color of their skin. Many of the areas reserved for the African Americans were in worse conditions than those reserved for the Whites. This left the freedmen with the more rundown environments while the whites were able to have the best of the best wherever they happened to go. They were also used in order to make the ability to vote more restrictive and difficult to achieve. In order for the freedmen to have the ability to vote many, many obstacles would have to be overcome, such as having to pay a steep poll tax and pass extremely difficult tests, such as literacy tests. Even though the “Jim Crow” style of segregation disfranchised the majority of the freedmen, the South was still able to have it imposed. The reason for the “Jim Crow” laws being able to be enforced upon the society in the South was due to the fact that the freedmen did not have any support of the North to prevent the South from being able to achieve such extremes. Along with this reason,
Jim Crow law passed in the late 19th century, kept African Americans, former slaves and their descendants in subordinate positions. The Jim Crow law, in essence, wanted African Americans to know their place and stay in it. The law gave White people the ultimate authority over their well being and lives. The European Jews experienced the same injustices. The most tragic being the Holocaust.
All of these Amendments were supposed to make black people “separate but equal”; (American journey 3). However, even after all these Amendments, equality was weak. Neighboring white town would move the voting box really far from black districts, so they couldn’t vote. This way blacks could not choose their representative. This went on until 1865 when blacks could no longer bear arms, voting and hold public assembling and eventually, blacks couldn’t use the same public facilities (buildings, property, and roads) like the bathroom, schools, house and etc (American journey 2).
Laws and rules had prohibited them from doing the same things as white people. Jim Crow Laws were created in 1877 to subordinate blacks as a group to whites and enforce rules that favored the white population. (Pilgrim, David). They were created with the belief that whites were better than blacks in every way of life. The main goal of the Jim Crow Laws was to segregate the two races in ordinary life.
Maceo Cardinale Kwik Reconstruction Reconstruction was the twelve years after the civil war. Those twelve years were full of readjustment fixing the ruin the United States had fallen into. The problems that had the United states in disarray were how to, rebuild the South, reunite the states, and ensure the rights and protection of the newly freed African Americans. The civil war left the South in shambles, and newly freed slaves struggled to adjust to their new freedom. Most Southerners hated reconstruction and everything else about the North.
During segregation, facilities for Blacks were significantly inferior to those for Whites, highlighting systemic racism. The continued existence of these disparities highlights the ongoing struggle for racial equality in the US. Jim Crow laws were a system of state and local laws that institutionalized racial segregation and discrimination against African Americans in the United States, affecting almost every aspect of their daily lives and imposing strict social codes that reinforced white dominance and superiority. The legacy of these laws continues to impact the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality in the United States. The Jim Crow system of racial segregation was prevalent in the United States from the late 1800s until the mid-1960s.
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, African American leaders developed a number of philosophies that targeted the problems African Americans faced. During this period of time African American faced many obstacles. As racism reached its high point, African Americans lost many civil rights gains that were created during Reconstruction. The Civil War Reconstruction was unsuccessful because it was supposed to guarantee full freedoms to all citizens to the freed slaves. As a result, many things like Anti-black violence, lynching, segregation, legal racial discrimination, and expressions of white authority increased.
Jim Crow laws Jim Crow law is how white people and colored people didn’t get along; there was lot unfairness between them such as segregation. Segregation is enforcing separation of different racial groups in a country, community, or establishment. Like, in Alabama hospitals private or public, there can’t be any female nurses in the same room as a black man. For the buses, they had separate waiting rooms and separate ticket windows for the white and colored people. With restaurants whites and colored couldn’t be served in the same room unless they had a solid wall built from the roof down to separate them.
Jim Crow laws in the southern states enforced segregation in public spaces such as schools, restaurants, and transportation. These laws also mandated the separation of blacks and whites in housing and employment. As a result, African Americans were forced to live in poor conditions with limited access to resources and opportunities. Document B asserts a quote discussing a white male point of view, it argues “... He shall be free to lice, and to thrive, but if he can, and to pay taxes and form duties; but he shall not be free to dine and drink at our board”
As current time and social status are being challenged and pushed, the Jim Crow Laws were implemented. These state and local laws were just legislated this year, 1877. New implemented laws mandate segregation in all public facilities, with a “separate but equal” status for African Americans. This may lead to treatment and accommodations that are inferior to those provided to white Americans, systematizing a number of economic, educational, and social disadvantages.
During the late 1800s, because the South had been decimated by the end of the Civil War, .the Reconstruction Period was initiated to aid the South’s recovery. Although the Civil War did abolish slavery and unify the North and the South, the war not resolve racial prejudice, the South’s damage, and the African Americans’ economic instability. The Reconstruction Period was initiated in order to prevent economic instability and the structural ruin, because since slavery was abolished, and the South was completely dependent on slaves, therefore slaves could not work for the South to maintain the economy, and slaves also could not fix up the damages done to the structures done to the South during the war. By starting the Freedmen’s Bureau and passing
The American civil war led to the reunion of the South and the North. But, its consequences led the Republicans to take the lead of reconstructing what the war had destroyed especially in the South because it contained larger numbers of newly freed slaves. Just after the civil war, America entered into what was called as the reconstruction era. Reconstruction refers to when “the federal government established the terms on which rebellious Southern states would be integrated back into the Union” (Watts 246). As a further matter, it also meant “the process of helping the 4 million freed slaves after the civil war [to] make the transition to freedom” (DeFord and Schwarz 96).
5th Hour Cause and Effect Essay Jim Crow laws The Jim Crow laws were unfair and unjust to all African-Americans by making them unequal. The Jim Crow laws are laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States. It used the term separate but equal, even though conditions for African Americans were always worst than their white counterparts. They could not eat at the same restaurant as white people, they could not used the same restrooms, and they couldn't even use the same drinking fountain.
Jim Crow ruled the Southern part of the United Stated for close to 80 years after the abolishment of slavery. African Americans gained freedom from slavery only to endure a tragic lifestyle no better then ownership. Perceptions of the African American race discouraged their livelihood. White people placed Africans in a form of segregation comparable to undesirable caste systems used in different countries. Africans addressed white people as “mister” or “misses”, however, white people addressed African Americans however they deemed fit.
The key thing to think about the Jim Crow law was that is that they were really about enforcing the idea of racial inequality in the everyday life. There were unnecessary laws like where black people could sit on buses and if they could stay in hotels or if they can eat in the same places or use the same bathroom. If a black was found in a place where they didn’t belong, you could possibly lose your life. It was a very rough time for blacks back in that time. Anything could happen to you at any time.
People from ethnic minorities and religious groups are significantly less likely than average to be at work, and when in work are paid significantly less than average. American have not lived up to the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independance. Throughout America’s history, groups have dealt with a large amount of deprivation of rights. For example, in the 1920s, black men and women were recognized for their music, literature, dance, and clothing. Although they were recognized, they were still segregated during the revolution.
